Figure we can keep this thread open for any impressions or news we hear. Because we all know we're getting this.

Yes please. Although bad timing with MW2 and whatnot. The new weapons look awesome as does the improved AI with changing the levels and making them more fun to play. Especially with the new way they handle the crescendo moments.
By the way, don't put yourself down, Alex--it's obviously very uncharacteristic of Valve to release a sequel less than a year after the original. And their reasoning is a little nebulous.
This is the 360's best exclusive. Damn exclusives! So jealous! I nearly moved into my friend's house when he initially got the first one.

I call dibs on Coach. Voiced by Cutty.
They got a redneck kid AND a dude dressed as Crockett. How can you not go wrong?!
I barely put time into the first one, so I'm a bit disappointed to get a sequel so soon. I hope it really does exist as a platform like Valve says.

Looks like the cast of True Blood.

Yeah, I don't get it really, other than the super obvious answer.

Valve hasn't really seemed greedy in the past. Maybe the perfectionists in the company felt a sequel was easier than a series of patches and DLC on the 360 end after all the (non)mess with Team Fortress 2 DLC.

Vavle employees are allowed to choose what game they work on next, and they loved L4D so much they immediately wanted to start working on the next one.
People are complaining about this? More so than any game last year, L4D was worth every penny, even before the free DLC.
I'm not sure I played the first one enough to justify buying a sequel to it so soon. But I really loved playing the co-op campaigns so it may be be enough to draw me in.

Still, with so many good games coming out this Fall again, will this be enough new that it makes people want to pick it up before Christmas?
That's my only problem. They should release this during spring or summer next year. It's going to get buried or put on the back burner for alot of people thanks to MW2.

I'm not complaining, don't get me wrong. The news just threw me off a bit.

This is my thought exactly. Maybe a group of us who don't feel like buying this at the $60 can still play the original after everybody else has jumped ship.

That or else I need to get a lot of playing in between now and November.
So, an achievement popped up a few days ago on Left 4 Dead during a heated session. I was taken aback, as I had thought there were none left I could reasonably expect (about 95+% of my game time was on versus, so the expert achievements and such were out).

It was the "Kill approximately 54,000 zombies" achievement. Yipes. Ummm ... that's a bit disconcerting, particularly as you only kill zombies for half of your game time in versus mode.
...maybe you should get out more or something? Take in a show, see some sunshine?

Maybe?

I always hoped that was some general jab towards Dead Rising, which I'm told has a similar number of total zombies that can be dispatched.

I only game from 11:30-2:30 a.m. So all I'm missing out on is sleep.
With the new A.I. Director I hope they can somehow connect the weather and time of day to your location. It would be so awesome to see the sun start to go down in game as its doing the same outside.
L4D3 should have mode where one player gets to be the director and the other 4 try to make it through. The director would have to have limits on what they could do but maybe earn "XP" or "Credit" or whatever to open up more options over time.

I wouldn't want them to scrap the multiplay it has now but I like the idea of a human director.
I would think you would already be able to do that on PC. Of course it would take a little technical savvy I'm sure.

*reminds self to check min requirements on L4D on PC when arriving home today*

Step One: get hired at Valve
Step 2: Choose "Portal 2" or "Half-life: episode 3 "about goddamn time!"" as next project.
Step 3: Joy.
Really? I know everyone loves this game, but there's no single-player content at all, so why not have new maps, locations and characters at the holidays?

HL2 - Episode 3 wasn't even teased at this E3. How long has it been? No new Portal info either? I like mindless zombie killing as much as the next guy, but gimme a break already. This isn't game development, it's sophisticated map-making.

It is. I forget the exact number, but Dead Rising has an achievement called "Zombie Genocider" which has you kill the entire population of the town (which then brings up the question of where all the other zombies are coming from). The L4D achievement is "Zombie Genocidest", and the number is 1 higher.

So, confirmed-

Demo before launch on 360 and PC.
20 new weapons. 10 of which are melee.
5 campaigns, for regular and versus from the getgo.
Charger boss zombie, which is basically a fast tank that goes down easier.
A Witch that moves around the level!
Regular zombies with hazmat suits that don't burn.
New grenades, not revealed yet.

Oh, and more DLC for original L4D.

AND very annoyed original L4D players- http://steamcommunity.com/groups/L4D...nguage=english
post #27 of 403
Man, that boycott site is hilarious. If I didn't know any better, I'd say it was a joke. LIES! FALSE PROMISES! DECEPTIONS! FIDDLE-BASED MUSIC!
Is Left4Dead even made by the traditional Valve team. I fought it was a bunch of Turtle Rock employees who had been absorbed into the fold.

I'm really unsure of whether this is going to be worth a purchase or not, largely because striving for the expert achievements on the original burnt me out so much.
I think most of you are missing one vital, extremely important fact:

Chainsaws.

Now the big question: will there be DLC of the old maps and characters and/or if L4D is found on your system, can it load those as well? Because much like Rock Band/Guitar Hero and its 5000 iterations, it'd be nice to have all of them at my disposal so I am not limited to just playing this one or just playing that one.

I love that the Anti-L4D2 Steam group went the Diablo 3 route. OMG THERES SUNSHINE AND UNICORNS IN MAH ZOMBIE GAME!
In response to the new article, I do have to agree with the irate gamers that some of the music is really wierd, like the Moroccan piece that randomly plays during a horde attack.

I loved this quote on that steamgroup page

* L4D2 is too bright to fit in with L4D1's visual aesthetic

Seriously, 3/4 of the people bitching are going to get the game anyways.

And as noted in this awesome article, this sense of entitlement is sad really.

The truth is, I've played Left 4 Dead so much that I have pretty much each map memorized, I want something new, and having the "changing" map set is great and something I'm looking forward too.

Every time something like this happens, I'm amazed at the sense of entitlement that gamers have.

Know what? Valve doesn't owe you anything

BINGO, The Valve forums after the TF2 update was just scary and sad. "The drops are unfair" "I want all the UNLOCKS NOW!" blah blah blah, after almost two years WE ARE LUCKY TO STILL BE GETTING UPDATES!

I can't wait for L4D2...L4D1 can only go so far till you crave something new.

It really makes me nuts. Especially for a company like Valve, that's been nothing but great to its customers! Fuck you, pony up some money if you appreciate their products!
Thanks for posting that, Alex. Had a very shitty day at work, but as soon as I read the article (plus watched the Conan clip with Louis CK), my spirits picked up immediately.

I get so tired of the so-called "fans" that bitch and moan about stuff like this. They probably just want attention.
I can understand feeling that the game is too soon. Valve's made a habit of using their games as testing grounds. I like that they seem to be more than a product and somewhat like an experiment in that aspect. Even if some of the experiments don't work they way they should (had a 9 hour stretch in TF2 with no drops; and people idling is just not playing a game).
Boycotting a product based on it being too soon is silly. Though they've made tons on this on disc and through Steam, Valve has every right to toss this game out there. As paying customers, the gaming public has a right to be leery of another $50-60 investment in what could be a new paint job with couple of upgrades. But calling for a boycott following a handful of details and teaser exceeds that leeriness. It's a knee jerk reaction by spoiled fans.
People are bitching about Valve releasing more games? Do these assholes even like games or is gaming for them a symptom of obsessive compulsive disorder? Fuck them right in their whiny, falsely entitled asses.
You have to realize that these douches have spent months since the original came, learning everything about the game. Finding the most boring and safe tactics so they can piss and moan about their teammates if they deviate from the gameplan.
Now they probably have to start from square one again. The poor festering dicks.

Totally. Same thing happened with Counter-Strike, just exchange months with years.
I can't comment on console players getting hosed, because really, you're already paying Microsoft a significant monthly fee just to get online.

However, I paid $35 for L4D the week it came out. That's a pretty good deal. I got my moneys worth, and then some. If you want to pay full price, fine, but it's hard to use that as justification that Valve somehow owes you 'more' because you didn't bother to find a good price.

Really good interview here: http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2...uel-to-ars.ars

Know what I would kill to see? L4D done classic overhead style, with analog control similar to SmashTV. That's what I want to see.
If it was any other company it wouldn't be a problem. It's just very surprising coming from Valve. Most of their fans are accustomed to waiting years for a new game. Now they just don't know what to do. All these new feelings are making them confused.

Its kinda like what it was like in High School with your favorite band. They get a hit single, kinda sellout, and you swear eternal hate for them.

Valve and Blizzard are still the kings. The "fan boys" that are now comparing Valve to EA is ridiculous."What?! Valve wants to make money?! and stop giving us free updates for the next 10 years!" It's a business, as long as they keep making solid products, I'll keep buying.
I enjoyed the first and got what I felt was my money's worth so I'll most likely pick this one up. Quick question but what is MW2? I'm drawing a blank on it.

I believe that is an abbreviation for Modern Warfare 2 (Call of Duty).

I'm surprised that no one has considered that distributing this content on disc might actually be cheaper than if Valve decided to release everything over DLC. I could see this stuff being put across 4 or 5 $15-20 DLC packs, depending on how many new levels there are and what kind of improvements there are to AI, graphics, etc.
I've put so much time into TF2 and it's free content that I almost feel guilty. If the TF2 team put up a Paypal donation link I'd throw them some money without thinking twice. L4D is a really fun game and most everybody has gotten more than their money's worth out of it NOW (and it's not like the sequel comes out next week). Valve doesn't just forget their games, they'll keep up with L4D love.
I wouldn't have minded if Valve could have given us HL2: Ep 3 before L4D 2. They haven't mentioned that one in months.
