People in soup kitchens shouldn't have cellphones.

I know this story is old, but why do people keep sending me this fucking garbage with rants about the poor having cell phones and expecting me to just chuckle or get as self-righteously outraged as they did over it?

And then when I respond to the effect of "Wait, when you go broke or end up in a soup kitchen, are there supposed to be people who take away all of your worldly possessions?" and "You know, there are pretty basic cell-phone plans that offer free phones with cameras. A phone with a camera isn't some highly exclusive thing these days. And what's wrong with someone having a cellphone? People need a line of communication for jobs, housing, etc. If he was sitting around all day next to a payphone waiting for a call, you'd still probably talk all kinds of shit about him", I'm still apparently being irrational because a black guy in a soup kitchen shouldn't be allowed to have a phone?

God, I hate people.

Well you can get pre-paid cell phones and only get charged for the calls you answer and screen for potential jobs, I think you can get one at Walmart with minutes for less then $30. This isn't some outrageous monthly cost that they're keeping up with...

Not to mention, Pay Phones aren't what they used to be.... if you can find one, as they're almost all gone now due to the fact everyone has cell phones. So I'd say this is almost an necessisty for someone attempting to get a job and fix the problems they are in.

I want that job.
You want to be a Repo Man?

And even then this complaint is bullshit. Pay phones don't exist anymore.
And seriously, even if this guy has a job and can afford a cell phone, he might not be able to afford to eat on a regular basis. Hell, there was a time when I had a 40-hour a week job and was getting by just fine, and still could have qualified for food stamps.
Dont know how it is in the US, but here in vienna I get a cellphone for the price of 3 McDonalds Big Mac Menus, medium size. Food certainly is more expensive than a cell.

Jake, amen. The same people who scream until they're blue in the face over a $20 cell phone have no idea about the money that has been fleeced right out of their own pockets through unfair and corrupt tax, credit and commerce policies to benefit the nation's wealthiest. It's like cockroaches fighting over a tiny crumb while ignoring the dung beetle trundling off with their whole crust of bread.

vermin analogy ftw! I wonder though, did you watch a big fat fly on your screen while typing this?

I dunno if this service is all over the US or not, but I've seen commercials here in Virginia about a program that offers free or cheap cell phones to low income people, as well as folks who aren't very mobile so they have something to use in case of emergencies.

I still can't get over someone basically telling me that you don't need a phone to get a job these days. I hope they tell me where they're giving out these jobs so that I can tell all these shiftless homeless people to pack up the soiled hospital linen, take off the "Happy Birthday!" party hats, and join the rat race already instead of being all silly and washing their hair with soup.
Oh thank God, your thread title scared me a bit Jake.

I've seen a few guys with cell phones at the soup kitchen I volunteer at. It's not really a problem unless they're on a call while in line. They always act all bothered when I interrupt their call to ask them if they want Manhattan-style Clam Chowder or New England. Nothing worse than uppity bums.

That IS pretty shitty. Plus people getting stabbed for talking too loud while others are trying to eat, FEAR MY HOBO KNIFE, etc.

Next, they'll bitch that the homeless shouldn't have shotguns. The fuck?!

Have I mentioned lately how much I love this message board? Because I do.

Especially Jake. Come here, big boy.
Having just signed up for a super-cheap pay-as-you-go cell phone plan, I can attest to this.

It reminds me of a great Todd Barry routine where his friend is bitching that prisons are like country clubs these days because they have color TVs. It's like, do you have any idea how hard it is to find a black-and-white TV these days?

Omar Little begs to differ.

Actually I was referring to David Brunt aka Hobo with a Shotgun.

How the hell are they supposed to 'get a job', as the asshole war-cry goes, if they don't have a way to get reached? And besides, I don't know how things are in the US, but over here you can pretty much walk around the street and pick up cell phones with pre-paid cards off of trees.
Greece has cell-phone trees? Awesome.

There's much you don't know about the European Socialist utopia, my friend. Perhaps I can re-educate you when the time comes.

(My apologies for the derail in advance people)

If I join this socialist utopia, could I get all the gyros I can eat?

It's not lunchtime yet...don't make me hungry. Gryros are the food of the gods. And not these crappy new gods, I'm talking the vengeful, randy gods from back in the day. Wait, those were *Greek* gods. There's got to be a connection.

If the state finds you worthy of representing it, of course.

One friendly suggestion, though. Your lack of conviction at your thread derailments shows that your exposure to Capitalism has weakened your resolve. I would work on that.
Yes, you're right. If I employ the Rand-ian convictions employed by the B-Movie Action Thread I could show the world the best that capitalism has to offer.

And also as a White American, would I be operating a diner in Greece? Kind of like the cabbie-exchange program.

You like-a da juice? Da juice is good, no?

Hey, I've read enough George Pelecanos novels to know how this shit works.

Operate a diner? Surely you meant volunteering at the State Soup Kitchen?

(And the thread gets back on track.)
State Soup Kitchen. Greek Diner. Not really a difference. *Ducks*

No doubt, but it does bag the question, which is easier to track. It what happen when you have a two party system, and one party is the commonest party and the other is the fascist party.

I was more curious how one bags a question. What kind of weapon should one use?

Correction, it is in fact the Slightly Silly Party.

Not that it's really all that related, but I do get pissed when I have patients that smoke two packs a day tell me that they can't afford insulin.

Or when moms ask for the doctor to write them a prescription for Tylenol so their Medicare or WIC can cover it, instead of just getting it over-the-counter.

Well, those are really two separate things. I can understand getting pissed at the first example, but some people are so hard up for money that it helps if they can the State to comp them pain relievers. Even $5 Tylenol can be an iffy purchase if things are tight.

Yeah, I know, and I don't get miffed by all of them. Just the ones that, you know, look like they should be able to afford it. With gas being the cost it is, it always baffles me that a parent would drive a febrile child to the hospital first before giving it tylenol or ibuprofen. Or that they don't have that kind of thing in the house already. Even without scripts, dollar stores and Wal-Mart sell that stuff all day long for $3.50.

If you're a parent, it's your obligation.

But I digress.
