DVD Extras Made Me Love/Hate This Person

I'm watching the extras on Defiance. I already mostly disliked Edward Zwick and his stupid formula movies, but this was the first time I've actually heard him talk about his work. He's a fucking insipid piece of pretentious shit and I want to punch his nose. Every word he says is an artistic cliche, and he's deadly serious concerning everything.

On the other hand, though I was already fond of his films, DVD extras led me to really fall in love with Guillermo del Toro.

Any other opinions?

I gained a lot of respect for Ben Affleck listening to the ARMAGEDDON commentary.
I concur with Guillermo. Anything with him on a dvd is gold. The commentaries on Kevin Smith movies made me fall in love with Affleck. That dude is fucking hilarious.

The commentaries on The Simpsons made me enjoy David Mirkin.

I concur. Smith has moments of funny while Affleck is like rolling off jokes left and right that are just awesome. I still say Affleck seems like a down to earth cool dude despite having made some shitty choices in what roles he'll take.

I really wasn't sold on Mr. "The Rock" Johnson for the longest time - I thought he was just another dumb, irritating, showboating meathead until I saw the extras for The Rundown. He came off as so disgustingly nice, down-to-earth, and just genuine - that I actually bothered to rent and watch Walking Tall.

True story.
If I didn't respect Roger Ebert before watching Dark City with commentary. I sure as shit do now.
I liked Kurt Russell as an actor for his movies, but I grew to like him as a person via his commentaries. He seems like he'd be a great person to know in real life.

Oh Affleck and Rock are great examples. I want to have dinner with both of them, but have little interest in their careers.

I think listening to Ridley Scott's Alien commentary is what made me start to hate him. Alien is one of the first movies that really had an impact on me at a young age. I still love the movie, but damn if his commentary didn't bore me to tears. It stained the movie for me, a little bit, kind of like when a little ketchup drips on your favorite white polo. It's not really noticable unless you really look, but even after you wipe it off, there's still a little hint of it that remains... There are many other reasons to dislike Ridley Scott, but that was the tipping point for me.

On the flip side of that, watching the extras on Aliens, a movie I have seen more than any other(mostly during a 2-3 week stretch of watching it daily, sometimes more, when it first came out on video), Cameron's interview where he describes how he wanted it to be a Vietnam movie set in space, was fascinating.

Third for Affleck. If anybody here hasn't listened to the Mallrats commentary track stop what you're doing and go listen to it now.

Affleck was the bomb in Phantoms...

I also like the Chasing Amy one. Good stuff.

Was that the one where Kevin Smith starts out the commentary with 'Fuck DVD'?

Yep.

I think we've had the conversation before about our shared mancrush on Affleck. Between him and Fillion, I could go gay.

I'll second the awesomeness of Kurt Russell. Big Trouble In Little China commentary makes me want to hang out with he and Carpenter all day every day.

I love Sorkin, I love West Wing but those may be some of the worst commentaries ever. Sorkin comes off as such a pretentious git.

I'm also not crazy about the Futurama ones unless Billy West or John Dimaggio are on. Groening and Cohen are boring as hell. I don't hate them as per the OP but they definitely bore me.
I liked TRey Parker and Matt Stone more after their Cannibal commentary. It's much better than the movie.
The Good Will Hunting commentary is pretty funny. Damon and Affleck ripping on Gus Van Sandt for putting "directed by" up right when the camera, I believe, is flying over the water("Jeez...Did you purposely put your name there at that exact moment?", or something to that effect) is pretty funny considering Van Sant is usually so serious.

Yes my potentially gay friend, yes we have. I'd also like to add that Big Trouble In Little China is super gold without a commentary. You add Kurt Russell to the mix on commentary and you really MUST own that disc. No debate to be had.

Nancy Cartwright is so bad, actually ruins The Simpsons.

Pang Ho-Cheung's insightful and funny commentaries have definitely made me appreciate him more as a filmmaker. That he insists on having them subtitled in English, despite his films never getting released in English speaking countries, makes me appreciate him as a person for looking out for the fans overseas... even though there's relatively few of them. (I wish Media Asia hadn't vetoed English subs for the special features on the otherwise excellent ISABELLA two-disc set - dropping June 11 on Blu-ray, mark your calendars.)

Ugh, Cohen has the most nails-down-a-blackboard voice. Couldn't listen to them at all.

The commentary on Dog Soldiers is ace, its like being down pub with the cast.

Affleck's jokes about the "Best Oil Driller in the World" on the Armageddon commentary is much funnier than anything in the film

Tommy Lee Jones on the MEN IN BLACK commentary reveals himself to be the most boring potential dinner guest you could ever ask for. Would not listen to again. Plus, I've heard from a friend that played polo with him in TX that he's a jackass.

You should hear her invitational voicemail for a Scientology event where she slips into her Bart voice and says shit like "Scientology is cool, man!"

EDIT: Here it is... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LLyldQ9u0o4 She doesn't actually say "Scientology is cool, man!" as I thought she did, but she's not far off.

Sean Astin comes off as a huge, self-important gasbag on all of the LOTR commentaries.
Affleck fans need to listen to the Clerks X commentary. There's a 15 minute stretch about hiring hobos to work on the film for a pair of boots and a sandwich that's funnier than the film.

Special features on everything Joss Whedon does confirms my belief that, except for Summer Glau, the people he casts are pretty much 100% their characters

Agree with the MiB commentary. Disagree with him being a jackass. Really nice guy.

The SUPERBAD commentary didn't make me hate anyone per say, but there was that really awkward argument over swearing in front of Judd's kid, who he brought to the commentary. Uncomfortable!

Listening to PRISON BREAK commentaries (I lead a sad life) lead me to really like the writers, for they knew and admitted what was stupid, what could've been done better, how dumb the show was etc....they made no excuses.

And if I were Jessica Hynes-Stevenson, I'd be just a liiiiiiiiiiittle creeped out by Patton Oswalt after listening to the SPACED commentary.

My favorite Affleck bit is the running joke about his Chasing Amy wardrobe being his "JV clothes" (as in Junior Varsity) cause his real everyday clothes had been stolen or something. The reactions to his wardrobe in every scene are hilarious and the term "JV clothes" has entered into my personal lexicon.

My favorite part was when his character started crying and he said something like "THAT'S ACTING, BITCH!"
Carrot Top on The Rules of Attraction. I'd seen his act a bit as a kid, and didn't really think much about him one way or the other. But after listening to him on this commentary, fuck him. He should have not have been anywhere near this movie.

God damn I'm going to QFT the hell out of that statment!

Plus side looks like I'm going to be watching Mallrats this weekend.

After seeing his line-o-rama type thing in The Devil Wears Prada gag reel (skip ahead to 1:31), I kind of love Stanley Tucci. "Little chocolate sauce and a bayonet".

As does Yeardley Smith. Always wanted to hear Harry Shearer's thoughts, but it appears he avoids commentary tracks like the plague.

I'll also second the David Mirkin love.

You should've loved Tucci long before that, Ripoll. Go watch Big Night immediately.

Or when he has to act upset and puts his head in his hands when it's revealed that Alyssa's a lesbian and Affleck just starts screaming.

"PUT YOUR HANDS ON YOUR HEAD LIKE THE KID WHO'S IN THE HOUSE BY HIMSELF OOOOOOHHH NOOOO!".

or something to that effect. I'm amazed that the Gone Baby Gone commentary is as sedate as it is given his track record.

Glad I wasn't the only one a bit disappointed by that commentary track. Not a bad commentary, but I would have loved to hear Affleck rip his own movie and decisions apart (even though it's pretty great). Hope he's not mellowing...he was fucking hilarious on SNL last season, so I'm guessing not.

I decided I don't like Ed Begley jr. after the Pineapple Express commentary. He seems really uncomfortable and tries to force a lot of jokes in on a group he doesn't quite mix with. But he's off it in about fifteen minutes.
Michael Bay on TRANSFORMERS commentary.

He's is quite diverse and gives normal people opportunities.

EX:

1- For the flame job on Prime, he wanted a straight-up Cholo and no one else.

2- The homeless guy by the Mountain Dew machine towards the end was really homeless. When they had to go to Detriot for filming, the homeless guy hitchhiked to be there and Bay wanted to get him a hotel room. Bay said he'll be in his films from now on.

Pretty cool in my book.

A friend and I used to refer to that part of the commentary all the time. "Indicate, damn it! Indicate!!!"

Interestingly, Alec Guinness kicked himself for resorting to a similar pre-packaged acting move when Alderaan got blown up. Tacky shit, Alec!

I kinda hated Jonah Hill after he was such an ass on the Superbad commentary

I still think that "dust-up" with him and Apatow was manufactured.

I hated him after the movie itself.

ETA: On topic, I know it's not groundbreaking, but the Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz commentaries made me fucking love those guys. And I'll second all love for Affleck.
Affleck is always someone whose presence I enjoy in television and magazine interviews. I've never heard any of his commentaries, but I'll have to seek them out after reading some of the posts here.

George Clooney is a strange case where I like the man but can't stand his commentaries. I've been a fan of the actor partly for his smart, self-deprecating humor, but on CONFESSIONS OF A DANGEROUS MIND he's way too serious and self-congratulatory, and with fawning DP Newton Thomas Sigel (THREE KINGS) the track becomes unbearable.
Come on guys, I thought it was obvious that whenever any kind of drama - arguments, trash talking, personal meltdowns, etc. - occurs in any of the special features of Apatow related DVDs, it's a bit (though not necessarily planned in advance). It's something of a running joke at this point, not to mention they wouldn't include the stuff (or would redo it) if it was real.

Anyway, I hate to be unoriginal but the first person that sprang to mind was Affleck. Even through bad career moves and periods of overexposure (i.e. Bennifer and all that shit), I've always liked the guy, and it's largely because of how he comes across on the commentary tracks of Kevin Smith movies.
Listening to the DVD commentary to Spider-Man 3 (yeah, I liked it) with Raimi, Franco, Kirsten, Grace and Maguire made me like the film more. They seemed genuinely into their work and complimented each other often when speaking about one anothers performances during a certain scene. Makes me wish I was an actor. There were too many times though, that they got off topic in their own conservation for my taste. There were some scenes I was looking forward on hearing about.
Astin was truly awful to hear on the LOTR tracks, but of course - by the time I finished the endless ROTK:EE Special Features in 2004 I was ready to write off all those actors and craftsmen. Too much, and I was sick of all of them. Except for Alan Lee I suppose, and his delightful teeth.

I would also add William Friedkin for his two separate dipshit EXORCIST commentaries.
Friedkin's a really entertaining asshole on commentaries. If you're not a fan of Schrader, you won't become one after his interviews or commentaries. Yet he's great on the page.
The Michael Mann/Jimmy Caan commentary for Thief pushed my love of both to ridiculous heights, that both have such airtight memories and that Caan gets Mann to loosen up from his normal brilliant detail driven mind set makes it a must here, to bad its not anamorphic.
