Andrew C, in my experience, Irvin Kershner is champion of state-the-obvious commentary.

Was relistening to Oliver Stone's JFK commentary last night. That man is a genius.

Zack Snyder sounds like a fratboy dipshit, at least on the DAWN OF THE DEAD commentary. He calls everyone a "rockstar" and generally has no insight on his own movies. It kind of amazed me that he's pulled off three decent films. I guess being a filmmaker isn't an necessarily intellectual process.

Thank you! This is why I constantly called him "Fratboy Zack" during the run up to Watchmen. The guy comes off as a complete idiot, and I'm sorry, but I think Watchmen was a thoughtless excercise in dull filmaking and the work of someone with zero imagination (My opinion, no one else has to agree). It had good moment, but those had nothing to do with anything Snyder brought to the table

Batman: The Movie. The commentary with Adam West and Burt Ward is hilarious. It almost seems like Adam is still in character as Bruce Wayne.

But he states it SO LOUDLY it's like listening to grandpa. And he directed Han Solo, so he's the cool grandpa.

The Wookieecast quoted him best:

"I like old gags!"

Regarding Tim Burton Commentary:

I love Timmy Burton dodging any questions one might have about the ending to his Planet of the Apes with rambling sentence fragments before just saying something along the lines of "Well... I don't want to ruin any idea for sequels the next guy might have."

Well Tim... I don't think there is gonna be a sequel. Soooo... WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT!?

Weren't you listening? It is what it is.

Yeah, I too was hoping for an explanation of Ape Lincoln. What I got was more questions.

Not that I ever hated him or anything, but I haven't much cared for Frank Oz's commentary tracks in the past. He always sounds overly serious and kind of bitter. But his guest track on Robot Chicken Star Wars Episode II is pretty terrific. They go off-topic and talk about his early work quite a bit.

Richard Stanley on the "Hardware" special features is so shifty-eyed and creepy. But he's certainly not boring. On one of the featurettes, he's showing you pictures of the MARK-13's power drill cock and on another, he's talking about how he heard that a robot on the West Bank actually killed a would-be suicide bomber.

Oh, totally, Gabe! I didn't mean that as an insult (tonal ambiguity strikes again.) By rights, that commentary should've been massively irritating. However, Kersh's warmth got me on-side.

It's funny that Stanley starts the commentary track saying he 'doesn't believe in commentary tracks', and then he proceeds to fill all 90 minutes to the brim with information. It's a pretty intense track actually. He also gives pretty good chat on the Dust Devil track, which is continuously funny considering his lack of belief in the practice.

I'm surprised no one's mentioned Paul Thomas Anderson. His tracks on Hard Eight and Boogie Nights are hilarious and entertaining as all hell. It's just a shame he hasn't done any commentaries since then, at least as far as I recall.

The 'post-mortem' easter egg on Magnolia is a riot.

I love the commentary on Starship Troopers, if only for this bit of Verhoeven explaining the effects (from memory):

"Digital...real...digital!...real!...a-a...a GIANT MIN-I-ATURE!"

Also, I always like Val Kilmer as an actor, but his commentary on Spartan indicates he's an intelligent guy - serious about his work, but with a dry, deep, wicked sense of humour.

Dominic Monahan's descriptions of dinner with John Rhys-Davies make me want to go to a Renaissance Fair with the guy.

After the extras on Gamer, I'm big fans of Neveldine/Taylor.

They're smart dudes that understand the value of budgets, and the fact that they're responsible for making the studio a little money in the process, if possible. They started to get to me a bit when they went on and on about how much they wanted Gerard Butler to do Crank though.

Statham is Chev Chelios dammit.

I was kind of 'meh' on commentaries for the longest time. And then I listened to the 'From Duck Till Dawn' commentary with Tarantino and Rodriguez, and now I wish that they'd just both get together and record commentaries for all of their movies.

Also, I never fully appreciated 'Evil Dead 2' until I heard the commentary. My favorite snippet of it: Bruce relaying a story of how Kurt Russell asked him to say "workshed".

Friedkin just basically narrates his films. His Cruising commentary his hilarious.

'and now they're going to the park to have some rough, gay sex.'
