The new Batman and Robin

Thread Starter
So the new Batman is Dick Grayson and the new Robin is Damien. I welcome the change. Batman's now an easy going guy and Robin's a grim lunatic. Oh and there's a flying Batmobile. I'm not really sure, but I guess their base of operations is Wayne Tower? The Batcave appears to be destroyed.

I hope it stays fun. Morrison's original Batman run was fun at first, but was eventually bogged down by crossovers, events and bat-hobo nonsense.

What happened to Bruce?

He died! Or disappeared! Or something.
I lost track of the mess that was FINAL CRISIS after about 2 issues.

Until CRISIS: ULTIMATUM- THE RETURN OF BRUCE WAYNE #1 (of 12) !

Dick Grayson calling Alfred's sandwiches "ferocious" was the gayest moment in at least recent Batman history. Good job, Morrison.

I'm glad that I'm at the point where I don't care about any of this.

Alfred's famous jalapeno chicken sandwich will light your ass on fire!
I care because it's Morrison. I admit that from a distance this sounds like the same kind of stupid shakeup that Batman went through all the time in the 80s and early 90s, but Morrison's run has been a legitimately fresh take on Batman (and, except for his somewhat jarringly hardcore take on the Joker, the antithesis of "grim 'n' gritty").

For the record, Bruce Wayne is...Jesus, I don't know. He's either trapped in a pocket dimension, reliving his life over and over again, or thrown back in time to the Stone Age and functioning as Cave-Batman, or Bat-Caveman, whose adventures I'm sure Morrison will detail at some point. Or else he's dead. Or all of the above.

And bat-hobo was genius.

According to the last page of B&R #1 The Red Hood and The Punisher fucked and had a big beautiful baby Jason Todd.
Whatwhatwhat?! Morrison is back on Batman already?!

I guess that means I'm back too.

edit: Oh! And it's Frank Quietly from All Star Superman!

Please, someone tell me in what sense Morrison's Joker is "jarringly hardcore".

So if Damien is Robin, what the hell happened to Tim Drake, is he Nightwing now?
Thread Starter
Drake might be "Red Robin".
http://dccomics.com/dcu/comics/?cm=11868

But he might be regular Robin again soon. In the "coming this year" page of Batman and Robin #1, it looks like Damien quits! He's GOIN SOLO!
I think (or at least hope) they'll keep Damien as Robin and Tim Drake as Red Robin for a while. Don't know what'll happen to Grayson when Bruce comes back. Maybe he'll die too.

I like how it appears Red Hood has his own female Robin.
I think it says somthing about the state of comics that nobody is outraged over this because everybody knows Bruce will be back within a year ,at the longest.

The rest of Morrison's run is very Silver Age and even flirts with goofiness. This version of the Joker, on the other hand, plays like the kind of thing "KEWL" and "GRIM N' GRITTY" writers have been doing with him for too long now. He's got one note: over-the-top psycho. It's not that that isn't memorable, and it can even work in the right setting, but it's seriously played at this point. And it's all the weirder since Morrison's run started with the Joker being tossed into a garbage can, which seemed like he was winking at the audience and saying "let's give this guy a rest for a while, OK?"

Maybe I don't read enough Batman comics to be jaded by this change in the status quo (and I don't), but I think this new dynamic has some real potential, especially with Morrison writing it. The fact that Bruce Wayne will be coming back is kind of missing the point, to me. Doesn't pretty much every comic book writer tinker with the status quo for their run, and then have it reset when the next guy comes on board?

Most of the fanboys who buy comics these days won't allow things to change. They'll bitch And whine until things go back to the way they used to be.

I hope the DICK & DAMIEN era lasts a while.
Much as I dislike the obviousness of the "secret, evil son" character of Damian, I thought the dynamic between him and a more-upbeat Batman was fun. And I think Dick, as Batman, smiled at least twice in this issue. A nice change of pace.

But yeah, I think the flaw this series has is that, unlike All-Star Supes, it has to be somewhat tied into current DC continuity. These days that's never a good thing.
They'll undo it all anyway, so it might be fun to see Morrison fuck up the sandbox for a bit. Remember Brat Pack? Sadistic, ugly goof on sidekicks and superheros? So weird seeing an in-continuity Batman comic that looks drawn from that world.

Just so you don't think you're yelling into the void, I remember Brat Pack. I was too young for it, though. It actually scared me.

Here's the new RED HOOD with one of those freaky doll-faced people from end of issue #1. Is it true that a bunch of artists are working on this book? Because starting with #4, Philip Tan takes over for three issues. I heard that we'll also be getting some art from Doug Mahnke and Frazer Irving.

Apparently Quitely is leaving for issues #4-9, but then coming back. Fortunately, Mahnke is a really good fit with his sensibility, and Irving's not that far off either. Could this actually be a series with multiple artists that...gasp...actually maintains a consistent visual tone?

I like the fact that this is an in-continuity re-imagining of Batman, new villains included. Sure, we're getting the Red Hood, but otherwise it seems like Morrison's treating it like a brand-new superhero book.

With Quitely popping in and out? Absolutely not. There can be similarities, but something about Quitely's eyes - I feel like every character in his stories wants to rape my corpse.
Great first issue. With this, Flash: Rebirth, In Blackest Night and Action Comics DC is really cooking again with their major characters. Hopefully they can keep the event books to a minimum.
Except that Superman isn't in Action Comics.
It doesn't matter that he's not in it, what matters is that Action Comics is one of DC's flagship titles regardless of who's being featured in it and it's good for them when it's doing well. Not to mention Rucka's doing a very good job. Sorry I didn't specify clearly enough for you.

...Thanks for sharing. And for ruining Frank Quitely forever.

Well, all of his characters have giant, creepy doll heads.
Grant is playing to his strengths by introducing villians with even creepier melted on doll faces.
Morrison seems to know how to compliment Quitely by giving him abstract and bizarre ideas to conceptualize and run with. I was skeptical about him drawing Batman and Robin when it was announced, but halfway through issue one I realized it was another good fit.

Not so much scared, I suppose. Creeped out.I remember my exposure to it was before encountering Dark Knight Returns, Watchmen, et al., and the concept of a serial killer offing sidekicks of superheroes (who weren't that much more ethical than the villains) offended my delicate adolescent Christian sensibilities. I remember it being unsettling.
I was being sarcastic. At the time of its publication, Brat Pack was one of the ickiest superhero things I'd read.

I've really come to hate Frank Quietly and his inability to draw faces.

He can draw faces, they just vary in different degrees of Down's Syndrome. It's hard to say those doll faces look very grotesque as they're just about the same as his normal faces.

We now have a BAT-ATV.
And is this the most interesting Dick Grayson has been since....ever? I liked how he bitched about the cape.

Because a standard matador outfit wasn't gay enough!
Could this be the end of Batman and Robin??

I already love this guy the Flamingo. Flamboyance and ultra-violence.
hahahaha I love that Batman is just laying there. You know he's just sort of groaning ".......ow."

You'd be groaning too if a bike just drove over your crotch.

QFT.

So I thought Quitely was THE artist of the moment. Doesn't anyone in here like him?
Love him. Wish he was doing the interiors on this arc.

I love Quitely. I laugh at all the "can't draw faces" comments.

My love depends on the book he's working on, but yes, the "same face/cant draw faces" comment is horseshit.
The guy can even draw 3 faces!

Well Morrison's run wraps up next week. I wish he'd stay with this Bat Book instead of going to off to do that BATMAN INC thing.

But Frazer Irving keeps getting better and better.
I've been impressed with his art since the first time I saw it in 2000AD.

I love this splash page.

Morrison has been great at introducing new villains into the Batman mythos. Professor Pyg, Pink Flamingo, Dr. Hurt...

I can't wait for Lord Death Man's return in Batman INC.!

I've also loved Morrison's run on Batman and Robin. Really fun, I've had a blast following it over the past two years.

I'm definitely interested in BATMAN INC. I just think Morrison barely scratched the surface when it came to the relationship between Dick and Damien.

But seeing how he works LORD DEATH MAN into the current DCU should be fun. I think LDM will also be appearing in an upcoming Batman: The Brave and the Bold episode called "Bat-Mite Presents: Batman's Strangest Cases!"

Hahaha, I just read the first issue and I thought this part was hilarious.

I absolutely love Quietly. His work on We3 is legendary, but some of his faces and characters look like they were doused in toxic chemicals like that one thug in robocop.
So Morrison closed out his run on Batman & Robin with Bruce Wayne coming out of the closet...as Batman's financial backer. So, now he's essentially Tony Stark BEFORE Tony admitted the obvious that he actually was Iron Man. Kind of stupid, but I guess it's easier now for him to appear at the same time as Batman, when the person behind one of the cowl is Dick Grayson, who was standing right next to Bruce along with current Robin, Damian Wayne, during the announcement...And all this at the end of a nearly incomprehensible story, while the final issue of Return of Bruce Wayne hasn't even came out yet. I assume at this point Bruce Wayne goes to jail for the rest of his life?
