How are people not killed while playing this?

It has good precautions to keep people safe? I know from playing it in England that you are more likely to hurt yourself than to hurt another person

As someone who used to play regularly I can attest to what Scott is saying. A lot of the tackles aren't as high impact as they look and aside from a few bumps and bruises you're likely to get less dangerous injuries than playing soccer. Worst I ever got from Rugby was a few cracked ribs, and that was largely due to falling awkwardly after a tackle.

The only dangerous tackle in rugby is after a high kick and whether or not a player knocks the opponent catching the ball when he is off the ground. High tackles have been banned so there is no usual danger there (unless it is misjudged). Worst thing that happened to me was tearing my knee ligaments but that was my fault for twisting my grounded leg in a bad angle.

That's far from reassuring.

I think the assumption is that Rugby is American Football without the body armour, but in reality they are immensely different sports especially in the way that you can tackle and the pacing of the game. American Football, due to its stop/start nature, plays into faster more aggressive tackling which requires all of the protection. Rugby has a more even flow to the game and as such the pace is often slower and tackles tend to have less impact. In Rugby you're looking to hold someone in place more than anything else, and properly tackling someone to the floor is usually not the best course of action (because whilst your down on the floor, the ball's been passed to someone else who's ran past you).

Then what's with the piling on then?

Have you been watching Rugby League or Union?

A lot of the piling on occurs when the player with the ball, stupidly, doesn't pass it when he gets tackled. This is fairly rare in Union, but a lot more common in League for some reason

Neither. This whole discussion came about because I discovered an inspirational sports movie with Sean Astin and Gary Cole on instant view that had rugby. It's Gridiron Gang but with rugby; I had to take a look.
