Overlord II

Overlord is definitely one of the most underrated games on the XBox 360. Despite it's niggly controls it had enough charm and intelligence to make me fall in love with the game.

I loved that the demo for number II opens with you clubbing baby seals to death. Hopefully this time your actions will be evil/more evil instead of just being the usual good/bad stuff you got in Overlord 1.

I liked the first Overlord, but Prototype and Ghostbusters coming out right before it (plus the fact that I finish games at a glacial pace) means I probably won't be picking this up for a while.

I haven't played Overlord or Pikmin, so I really don't know what to expect. So I have to ask, is this a strategy game? If it's more action then strategy, then I'm sold.

Got to play the 1st for free through Gametap and the demo has made me look forward to playing the sequel.

Well then, I'm sorry to tell you that it's more like an RTS. It's not turn based, if that's your beef. And you could certainly play it like an action game, but it's more about picking the right units to fight a certain enemy than it is about running in sword a-swinging.

Don't know why this demo isn't on my ps3 with lotsa virtual clubbed baby seals being created by my ps3 controller.

Gonna have to rectify that tonight.

That video is really odd. Funny, but really odd.

I don't mind turn based RPG's like Lost Odyssey, I've just never had the patience for a strategy game, and I've tried since I was a kid. Defender of the Crown through Command and Conquer (4?).

RTS? It's a hack and slash game where you control minions. Hardly an RTS... although there are a few strategic points. You control the Overlord with the usual controls, you can smash away at enemies with your sword or use magic, or just simply guide your minions around with the right analog stick. The right trigger sends them forward, the left locks onto objects. There are some puzzles that rely on you using the different types of minions correctly to get past doors and take down enemies. It's very, very simple.

Thanks Alex. It's just now pretty high on my buy list.

Eh, I said it's more like an RTS because I found most of the combat was about using the right minions in the right places rather than just running in and chopping. It's definitely not as action-y as something like God of War. It's fun though.

Also, I might also have been a tad too cautious while going through the game. I tried to get through most situations while losing the minimum amount of minions, setting the different colors at different waypoints to maximize their effectiveness, etc. I guess it could be considered more of an action game if you just had all your minions attack at once and then charged in.

Heck, Zeroillusion, the original's got to be cheap enough for you to give a shot.

Note that if you do get it, the PS3 version comes bundled with the DLC that was released on Xbox 360.

This is one of those rare games where I liked the demo, but some of the reviews put me off from buying it. I'll probably pick this up for cheap on the PS3 if I hear good word from you guys on the sequel.

Edit: Fuck! I wasted my 4,000th post.

Of note is that the DLC for the Original Overlord is maddeningly difficult at times.

So, after playing the demo (fun. Clubbing seals never gets old) I decided to give Overlord 1 a whirl. I'd seen my brother play it, and I got a kick out of watching him beat up hobbits and destroy sets from peter jackson's LOTR.

So, yeah, the game is fun and still pretty decent to look at. The camera is the biggest hurdle (but its not broken like some critics have suggested) but they seem to have fixed it in the sequel's demo. So yeah, I think I'll be picking up the sequel, especially since it contains Spitlscreen co-op as well.

The biggest hurdle in Overlord, to be honest, is that the micro management of your minions was a little off in the first one. Lost track of how many times I lost a pack of really well trained browns in a small puddle in the first game. Also the final stages, with the dwarves and the desert thieves, are a massive difficulty spike that the game never really recovers from.
