This is a new British Indie horror. Minimal budget, first time director, high concept, interesting if flawed execution.
The film's essentially about a trio of witches who've been cursed to an eternity in limbo lest they make an offering of a human scarecrow. As such they have to collect body parts from five different victims to complete the scarecrow. As luck would have it, five berks show up on their doorstep and mayhem ensues.
What the film gets right is its concept and tone. The backstory with the witches is well done, and includes the first time I've ever seen a 'reading the books to find the answer to a curse' montage, the banter between the victims is great (even if they are all absolutely horrible people) and the practical gore effects and kills are well done, if not particularly creative. Head's get caught in bear traps, people get chestburstered, all the usual grim stuff. Of key importance is that the girls playing the witches are all fantastic, to the point where it's hard to not kind of side with them after a while.
The problem is that whilst the dialogue and incidents are well done, the story as a whole is rather incoherent. There's also a vaguely sleazy vibe to the entire film, particularly in the second half where the sisters (who are all overt victims of sexual abuse from their father) use their sexuality to lure the men to to their dooms. The cheap looking film stock combined with homely looking girls combined with the knowledge of abuse gives the sexual content in the second act a real sleazy feel. But if you can get past the occasional shoddy nature of the movie it's well worth watching/.
