Dave apologises to Sarah Palin...

Really Dave?

Really?

Letterman apologises for Palin daughter joke

US talkshow host David Letterman has sought to draw a line under his feud with Sarah Palin, apologising for making a raunchy joke about the Republican politician's daughter.

In a transcript of remarks Letterman was to deliver on CBS Television's The Late Show on Monday, the 62-year-old funnyman issued a heartfelt apology for a gag that drew a furious response from Palin, who is governor of Alaska.

Letterman's gag referred to Palin's daughter being "knocked up" by baseball star Alex Rodriguez after the governor and her family recently attended a New York Yankees game.

Palin had accused Letterman of targeting her 14-year-old daughter Willow who had attended the game with her.

Letterman, however, said his joke had meant to target Palin's 18-year-old daughter, Bristol - whose teenage pregnancy became a talking point during last year's presidential election campaign - but his intent was irrelevant.

"I told a joke that was beyond flawed, and my intent is completely meaningless compared to the perception," Letterman said.

"And since it was a joke I told, I feel that I need to do the right thing here and apologise for having told that joke. It's not your fault that it was misunderstood, it's my fault.

"So I would like to apologise, especially to the two daughters involved, Bristol and Willow, and also to the governor and her family and everybody else who was outraged by the joke.

"I'm sorry about it and I'll try to do better in the future."

"I told a joke that was beyond flawed, and my intent is completely meaningless compared to the perception,"

"It's not your fault that it was misunderstood, it's my fault."

I know Dave's trying to be extra-classy these days, but somehow I think he's missing the point of comedy with these comments.

Seriously fuck Palin and her "Letterman needs to apologise to the young women of America" bull-fucking-shit, this fuckin harpy shouldn't be pandered to. No politician should be, ever. She's fair game and so is her daughter when she chose to politicise her last year.

I understand why Dave did it, but this actually get's me pretty steamed.

A joke is in the intent, not the perception.

No other talk-show host went after Palin so mercilessly. Pretty brutal write-up in the Chicago Sun-Times - fuck them. Funny how in the interview last week Lauer didn't mention similar jokes made by Leno and Conan last year.

.
Eh, Palin can go get fucked 3 ways from Sunday but confusing the 14 yr old with the 18 yr old (who is trotting herself out into the public eye right now, so she's fair game) was a pretty big, er, boner.

Yeah but Dave didn't do that and my guess is neither did Palin, she's just happily misrepresented the situation to make it look like Daves making sex jokes about a fourteen instead of a had-a-kid-already eighteen year old.

it was typical politicking and Im disappointed Dave has had to pander to it.

The only truly sad part is that it gets Sarah Palin back in the public eye and some "street cred" with the GOP...

...wait, no - I WANT them to try trotting her out for Prez. That would be the awesomes.

I'm still hoping someone calls out Bristol on her retarded People Magazine cover.

"If girls realized the consequences of sex, nobody would be having sex," the teen mom tells PEOPLE. "Trust me"

Really? So soon as your hillbilly boyfriend knocked you up and you realized the consequences, you quit having sex, right? When you paraded him around at the convention, you two hadn't been having sex for seven months at that point? Do tell!

Dave had zero to apologize for. He took shots at people who set themselves up for shots.

She actually said that? Holy shit!

Yeah, I hope to Emerald Allah that she's their pick for '012. Her entire national political campaign(s) is based on trying to make people feel sorry for her, from "lipstick on a pig" on. 'Cause We've all seen what happens when she tries to discuss the issues.

Dave screwed up, but now he apologized. Issue over, move along ...

I disagree. How exactly did he 'screw up' ElCap?
I think the children of these politicians are off limits, even if they're 18 years old.

But the screw up is that he confused the daughters, and made it sound like he was making fun of the 14 year old. Now, being a fan of Dave, I knew he wasn't willingly doing that but he had to clarify and apologize in my view. Sorry, maybe the fact that I have 3 daughters makes me biased, but that's how I see it.

After this just drop it, the Palin supporters keep milking this then they're the ones that are going to look bad. But I'm glad he did the apology to be quite honest.
Whether it was Dave or one of his writers someone definitely did screw up. The intent was to make a comment on her moron over 18 single mother daughter, but apparently when they read Palin was in town with her daughter they decided she only had one. Had they actually read past the headline, this wouldn't have happened. The target of the joke was obvious, and Dave left a big fat hole for Palin to strike back with her ridiculous republican ways like he was caribou in her site.

I disagree that her children over 18 are off limits. She's a public figure, and she wasn't a good enough mother to keep her daughter out of controversy.
I have seen this as "breaking news" on CNN while surfing the channels yesterday night. Needless to say that it is a sad state of play that this is considered even loosely as news on other platforms than TZM. Mind you that was the same night that had Teheran on the verge of revolution and some seemingly important proposal of a health care bill.

Yet somehow a comedian telling a bad joke does make the press. If politics are reduced to this personal celebrity shit and a TV show does make politics by telling a joke you are either in Teheran or maybe Italy. But I weep for the state of public discourse if this is even worthy of debate.
What a load of bullshit. Anyone with a functioning brain cell knows that the joke was meant for the 18 year old. An 18 year old who's not at all off limits since giving multiple interviews and appearing in magazine covers pushing her mother's hypocritical, bullshit, abstinence agenda.

Oh, and great job moron, showing your anger at someone making a sex joke about your daughter by making one about her yourself. Fuck of and die you Stillson vibe giving creep.
I just hope Letterman doesn't regret the apology. When you think about it, we probably only have another few years of Dave left - he's 62? I remember watching this bit live back in '92, when Showalter was managing the Yanks (audio is off, but his impersonation of Sparky Anderson is bang-on):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YzbacG0k7C0

Just don't want Dave retiring with regrets. He was a stand-up guy attempting to make up for the Bill Hicks fiasco, but Palin isn't worth the same effort. Even if it wasn't crystal-clear she and her scumbag cronies are exploiting the situation.

Article in the Huffington post which illustrates that:

With all due respect, Jan, we all should have started weeping for the state of public discourse the moment Palin took the stage.

And I absolutely adore how all the Republicans are up in arms about feminists not taking up Palin's cause and even going so far as to say that the left is a breeding ground for misogyny. Nevermind the fact that these fucks only take up the banner for the cause whenever it's politically expedient for them, otherwise it's "give us your uterus, shut up, and get back to the kitchen." Douchebags.

Thats sorta true, though weeping for humanity would have been more appropriate in that instance. But at least she was running for vice president of the US of A. This job is something that could be called news-worthy. But a breaking news about a butched joke is straight out of Idiocracy or Orwell or even Dantes seventh level of hell.

I really wish Sarah Palin's own mother had gotten this advise and taken it to heart.

oh, and El Cap, just so you know, 18 years old = adult, not child. You might want to keep that in mind.
Sure, but as I said, the initial screwup was confusing the daughters. After that, as I've said countless times, I'm not one that really cares about the sons and daughters of politicians ... children or adults.

And yes, this is a waste of time. That it is getting more play than what is happening in Iran is making me very angry.

This reminded me of that epic election thread, after Palin had been announced and most were just getting to know her, and it was kind of a scary time when people thought maybe the gimmick might just work, and then somebody posted stillson.jpeg and it was the best message board post ever. I know it was less than a year ago, but still- great days, great days.

Especially so if Letterman's not the father.
While Letterman probably doesn't savor apologizing to Palin, I'm sure he's motivated to simply own up to the fact that he screwed up a joke. Guy is a pro, and I wouldn't expect any less, Palin-involvement aside.
I wonder if Sarah Palin would have cared if Howard Stern said something about her daughter. In fact, I think he wouldn't have made a thinly veiled reference and would just have come out with a direct joke. But really, it's because Letterman is on national television.
Where's the apology to A-Rod or Spitzer, neither of whom is depicted too flatteringly in Dave's routine? No justice, no peace!

I'm with Mike here; the 18 yr old could/should be as off-limits as the Bush twins were...until she starts putting herself out there as a public figure.

Oh wait, that happened. Remove the red jersey and commence firing.

Footage from a fire David Letterman rally.

Take special note at the 2 minute mark for Howard Stern staffers Richard Christy and Sal The Stockbroker faux making out in the background.

Yeah, I clicked on the link and read that and put my head in my hands. The "sex offender" pics I saw elsewhere.

Welcome to Doug Stanhope's brand of comedy.

EDIT: I would LOVE to see them take on Stanhope, actually. Please do this, world. Please.

I know I link to Pandagon entirely too much, but this is a good piece from Amanda Marcotte that sums up the dumb outragin' in a few handy paragraphs.
