Cross-country moving!

So I am officially moving at the end of September. Leaving behind the deserts of Los Angeles for the forests and rain of the Pacific Northwest (I'm not complaining though). Here's the rub: I want to move my stuff in the easiest, cheapest way possible.

I don't have a car and I'd rather not do U-Haul since I'll be trekking up there all alone and would certainly crash the thing. I know some people use those cross-country pods to ship their stuff but I'm wondering if the cost is worth it. I don't have that much stuff (about a room full) and I'm trying to save cash.

I know a bunch of Chewers have moved all over the country through the years. Any ideas or suggestions? Any help is much appreciated.

U-Hual really isn't that bad. Also remember that there are competitors like Penske and Ryder where you may be able to get a truck for less. I know folks who have used Pods without much problem. If you really don't have much then sell it and get new when you get there. Lots of sales now.

Or, you can do like I did. Get a job with an airline that has an employee cargo discount. Get them to push one of those big cargo containers to the side of the loading doc and load all your stuff into it (or your girlfriends in my case). Flew all her stuff from Seattle to Atlanta for around $500 and it arrived the next day. Of course, that was before 9-11 and probably wouldn't work now.

Just use a freight company like ABF or whatever that basically brings a semi trailer by your house, you load it up (paying by the foot of depth that you use) and then it shows up 2 weeks later at your new location. When I was moving a couple years ago it was the most affordable and easiest way to do a cross country move.

I'm considering moving in the winter and if I were to, I'd definitely go the LTL freight method. My friends moved from Wisconsin to North Carolina last year and after doing research themselves ended up going that way as well.

Well, technically going from the bottom to the top is crossing the country ... just vertically not horizontally.

Well done. Cross-country moving just sounds so much cooler than the alternatives.

You can try this: http://www.uship.com/

It is a place where you can get people to bid on shipping your stuff. Shippers vary from the big boys to a guy with a trailer. You post what you want shipped and they tell you how much and how long.

This price estimator is fun to mess with:

I've never tried it myself, but I looked into it when I had a motorcycle I had to ship coast to coast (legit: Seattle to Atlanta).

Thanks for the advice. I've also been looking into Amtrak Express Shipping. It's apparently really cheap and easy. Throw your box (up to a hundred pounds) on a train and it'll let off at a destination of your choosing, as long as someone is there to pick it up. But I'm still looking at all alternatives.
