From the Dept. of Grim Reality: The American Empire is Bankrupt

As China puts a "buy Chinese" provision in its stimulus package and other countries take steps to protect their domestic manufacturing base and middle class, the US continues to slide towards a scary possible future.

Quote:
The American Empire Is Bankrupt

By Chris Hedges

This week marks the end of the dollar’s reign as the world’s reserve currency. It marks the start of a terrible period of economic and political decline in the United States. And it signals the last gasp of the American imperium. That’s over. It is not coming back. And what is to come will be very, very painful.

Barack Obama, and the criminal class on Wall Street, aided by a corporate media that continues to peddle fatuous gossip and trash talk as news while we endure the greatest economic crisis in our history, may have fooled us, but the rest of the world knows we are bankrupt. And these nations are damned if they are going to continue to prop up an inflated dollar and sustain the massive federal budget deficits, swollen to over $2 trillion, which fund America’s imperial expansion in Eurasia and our system of casino capitalism. They have us by the throat. They are about to squeeze.

There are meetings being held Monday and Tuesday in Yekaterinburg, Russia, (formerly Sverdlovsk) among Chinese President Hu Jintao, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and other top officials of the six-nation Shanghai Cooperation Organization. The United States, which asked to attend, was denied admittance. Watch what happens there carefully. The gathering is, in the words of economist Michael Hudson, “the most important meeting of the 21st century so far.”

It is the first formal step by our major trading partners to replace the dollar as the world’s reserve currency. If they succeed, the dollar will dramatically plummet in value, the cost of imports, including oil, will skyrocket, interest rates will climb and jobs will hemorrhage at a rate that will make the last few months look like boom times. State and federal services will be reduced or shut down for lack of funds. The United States will begin to resemble the Weimar Republic or Zimbabwe. Obama, endowed by many with the qualities of a savior, will suddenly look pitiful, inept and weak. And the rage that has kindled a handful of shootings and hate crimes in the past few weeks will engulf vast segments of a disenfranchised and bewildered working and middle class. The people of this class will demand vengeance, radical change, order and moral renewal, which an array of proto-fascists, from the Christian right to the goons who disseminate hate talk on Fox News, will assure the country they will impose.

I called Hudson, who has an article in Monday’s Financial Times called “The Yekaterinburg Turning Point: De-Dollarization and the Ending of America’s Financial-Military Hegemony.” “Yekaterinburg,” Hudson writes, “may become known not only as the death place of the czars but of the American empire as well.” His article is worth reading, along with John Lanchester’s disturbing exposé of the world’s banking system, titled “It’s Finished,” which appeared in the May 28 issue of the London Review of Books.

“This means the end of the dollar,” Hudson told me. “It means China, Russia, India, Pakistan, Iran are forming an official financial and military area to get America out of Eurasia. The balance-of-payments deficit is mainly military in nature. Half of America’s discretionary spending is military. The deficit ends up in the hands of foreign banks, central banks. They don’t have any choice but to recycle the money to buy U.S. government debt. The Asian countries have been financing their own military encirclement. They have been forced to accept dollars that have no chance of being repaid. They are paying for America’s military aggression against them. They want to get rid of this.”

China, as Hudson points out, has already struck bilateral trade deals with Brazil and Malaysia to denominate their trade in China’s yuan rather than the dollar, pound or euro. Russia promises to begin trading in the ruble and local currencies. The governor of China’s central bank has openly called for the abandonment of the dollar as reserve currency, suggesting in its place the use of the International Monetary Fund’s Special Drawing Rights. What the new system will be remains unclear, but the flight from the dollar has clearly begun. The goal, in the words of the Russian president, is to build a “multipolar world order” which will break the economic and, by extension, military domination by the United States. China is frantically spending its dollar reserves to buy factories and property around the globe so it can unload its U.S. currency. This is why Aluminum Corp. of China made so many major concessions in the failed attempt to salvage its $19.5 billion alliance with the Rio Tinto mining concern in Australia. It desperately needs to shed its dollars.

The rest is here.

Thanks for the link, yt.

So this meeting in Yekaterinburg has been reported elsewhere in any what you would call classic media outlets? No? go figure.

Oh, and thanks for the link as always!

I know, right? I guess the Palin-Letterman spat of last week is more important.

ETA: I'd love to hear what all the "free market capitalism" and "free trade" evangelists that have been doggedly making their case in these forums for years have to say about this new development.

I saw this reported on CNN.com yesterday. I'm sorry, but I don't have the link for it.

Don´t bother that will be true then. And that is at least a silver lining on the horizon. I am really looking forward in an awkward way to the day when the penny is fully dropped and the emperor finally has no cloth for everyone to see. But so many political threads around here make me angry about the media in your country. (Which is not to say that we live in a garden of state of the art journalism here but the difference is huge). With a public in apathy the future can´t be good.

Soooo...beans and shotguns, right? Those are the only things I'll need come September.
I think the situation has the potential to be bad, but I don't think it's going to happen like that. The fact is, other countries need the American economy to purchase their goods. Especially Japan and China. Other countries just don't buy the high-end goods like we do, not at the rate we do, even in this economy.

Sic semper tyrannis........

I guess we've been the school yard bullies for long enough......

Maybe we will have to start manufacturing our own shit in our own country for a change. I expect Walmart to be hurt the worst.

One thing that should reassure all of us: the Wall Street betting spree + bailout money + offshore accounts should keep the 3300 or so wealthiest American families in fine shape should the dollar collapse. The rest of us not so much.
Any idea were that 3300 are currently located? Is it too soon to turn to cannibalism?

I swear to god, this is all my fault. You see, I have had a long standing history of being financially irresponsible. I finally get my shit together, and I am buying my first house, so of course, now, my entire Country's economy is falling apart and we are headed for a new feudalism.........sigh, damn you Murphy and your stupid law!

Oh, hey, man, who are we to judge what these hardworking folks do with their money? We don't have do judge so much, long as the pitchforks are sharp and the flames are a-hoppin'.

DOOM!

Things won't be ask shiny as before, but that guy is nearly describing Mad Max. The US will still be consumer state, but not the leading one.

I'll miss basketball and Chud.com but I'm ready for a change. Going back to the soil of my forefathers and living with the land ,without the trappings of modern technology, kind of appeals to me.

Of course America will last forever, greatest system of government ever devised, Mom, apple pie, blah blah blah. I hope that hubris keeps people warm at night if something this radical were to occur.

Anybody want to invest in my start up? I'm going to manufacture body armor from tires and rusty sheet metal.

also, next year we are starting up the 'pig fart methane as fuel' division.

There is still something to be said for a country upbringing in regards to self-sufficency and community. Devin has experience in a "Depression proof industry"? I have experience in the skills required to survive Steel Dawn.

Not any different from what Burger King sells now.

Anyway, as for this thread. I mean what's being addressed are very important concerns (Although I think the claim of calling an Obama a crook is uncalledfor) . The problem is that to really discuss theses issues in an indepth manner is something that a lot of us don't really have the time for. Which is why threads such as these devolve into the same mobius argument with the same people (You all know who you are, so I'm not going to bother with naming names).

Fixed for you. Remember, Taco Bell wins the franchise wars.

It's a real shame that's going to happen. Not unless the breakaway Del Taco faction comes into play.

I see some pretty decent gallows humor on display here, but I don't think its fair to say the thread has degenerated.

Snaike has yet to chime in with his special brand of right wing nonsense, and Duke fleed hasn't made any
incomprehensible comments here yet.

I'm just saying there are certain benchmarks that a thread needs to reach before it's a total loss.

As a member of the eeeevvvviiilll free market cabal let me chime in here as I twirl my mustache. First off, the article is just a tad alarmist. There is some truth there about the meeting but it is buried behind the DOOM TO AMERICA theme running through the article. Secondly, the death of capitalism and the economic end of America has been foretold countless times before and we've always beaten the rap. So until it happens, I'll follow my fellow lemmings around and suck it up. Third, even if the BRIC nations decide to move entirely away from the dollar they can't. Its impossible unless they want to take a bath like you wouldn't believe. If the dollar dies China will lose soooo much money it will blow your mind. And even if it were possible it would take decades to fully enact. Lastly, the amount of resources America has (oil, farmland, highly educated workforce, generally low taxes, military industrial complex, ingenuity, etc.) will keep America kicking for a long time. Some of the shine may be off the old girl, but she's not going anywhere. Besides, we all know this will all eventually lead to an America/China merger foretold by that wise sage Whedon.

Now, let me go find some UAW folks to kick around for a while as I prepare my bath made of hobo blood.

Well at least the article didn't mention any animal abuse, or else Dreary Louse would have been over this like fly on shit, claiming Men's right to torture animals as they see fit.

At least from my perspective I really, really don't care at this point if any of that came to pass. We've reaped what we've sowed and hitched our wagons to a corrupt and broken system that is run on human fuel. Obama is not going to save us nor are any of the platitudes we ascribe to the United States of America.

The only thing that will save us is, well, us. If we can't live together for the benefit of all, using the better parts of ourselves (our ingenuity, our imagination, our intelligence, our curosity and our capacity for empathy and compassion with the other people we walk this planet with) to overcome the worst, then we deserve no favors, no do-overs and no safety nets. Blow it up and start it all over again I say.

We'll be fine. Sure, things might get rough for awhile, but the US has more resources, both in terms of brainpower and natural resources, than any other country. If we need to become entirely self-sufficient, we've got a better chance of success than anyone else. That's not hubris, either; we simply occupy a better chunk of real estate.

We bounced back from the Great Depression, and no matter how far we may fall this time we'll recover as well in due time. That's not to say bad things won't happen before now and then, but nobody is positioned as well to recover as we are. It's not a coincidence that no matter how bad we're doing at the moment we still have a bigger illegal immigration problem than Russia, India, or China.
