The Chud - Greatest video games of all time list.

Inspired by just how wrong the Empire list (in this thread http://chud.com/forum/showthread.php?t=116949) actually is. I figure we could do much better.

I was thinking of something along the lines of the memorable TV characters thread Rath did a while back, where we list 100 games (and whether they should be included) and then bitch about the order.

So who is up for that?
Count me in.
Sure. I'm in too.
I'm in, but I'm just there to fight to the hilt for Mass Effect and Eternal Darkness.

I think we should have a few basic rules as well, again similar to the TV character thread.

Don’t just post the name of the Game; post a couple of sentences stating your case for its inclusion.

No group entries. I think it would ruin the fun if you just say “The Zelda Series” for example. Pick one game and then state your case for that. Of course if someone else states another game in the series then we would need to decide which was better.

Finally if enough people disagree with your entry or if you don’t give a valid reason for it then it wont get into the final list.
Yes please thank you.

edit: I hadn't seen that Empire List before, but I had to physically restrain myself from closing the window when I saw Chrono Trigger at 67.
So very in. If for no other reason than to ensure Amplitude's inclusion, and to crucify the first motherfucker to think Halo or Gears of War belong anywhere near this thing.
I guess I have no choice but to jump in as well....even if it means I'll get to make a fool of myself defending "Dark Castle" (i had one of those b&w Apple computers as a kid, and at that time, that game was awesome)
I'm in. Somebody has to make sure you clowns don't just include games from the last 5-15 years.
In, kinda like the video game draft we did last year.
In. And where's Judas? We need someone to represent the pre-80s games.
I believe Dickson was the one responsible for that during the video game draft. And speaking of which, where is Rob?

Time to Kick the puppy off I think, So lets choose 1 - 100 and then order them from there. Also if we could include the last entry when posting the next one it will help keep track of where we are.

As it's not a draft if other folks want to join in I they are more than welcome.

1. Pac Man.

It Saddens me that we live in a generation that wouldn't put this game in any kind of best of list. This is a game that is still addictive today almost 30 years after its release.

And to this day I still don't know why the ghosts had two sets of names.
(prev. entry 1. Pac-Man)

2. Donkey Kong

How many kids today know that Mario was one of the first popular video game villains?

Came out in 1981, is it the first iteration of a "platformer"? Pitfall came out the next year, I'm trying to think of any earlier platformer type games ...
1. Pac-Man
2. Donkey Kong

3. Super Mario Bros 3

The pinnacle of Mario on the NES. Everything comes together with this one. Filled with unique worlds and even more unique weapons: The Leaf, The Toonoki Suit, The P-Wing and most importanly Karubi's Shoe.
Are we allowed to comment on some of the entries or we just want to list them first?
4. Tie Fighter.

Besides looking awesome, it also had an almost perfect difficulty curve. Without knowing it you ended up playing with power distribution between engines/shields/weapons and shield positioning and it felt like the most natural thing in the world.

Plus during the minefield clearing mission it had one of the most fun plot twists in a game ever.
1. Pac-Man
2. Donkey Kong
3. Super Mario Bros 3
4. Tie-Fighter

5. TETRIS
Invented by an awesome Russian. Probably the most-played, addicting game ever, destined to live on by being played in the toilet on dude's cell phones. Sold approx. 40 billion gameboy copies.

Tie fighter ruled so much
So is this INFLUENTIAL or BESTEST?

6. The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind

Viewed as something of a regression after the insanely large Daggerfall, Morrowind would go on to be one of the first PC games to gain true acceptance through a console port. Whilst Oblivion gets the most accolades, it was Morrowind which tested the console waters for 'hardcore' western RPGs and proved that consoles could handle large PC games. Plus it was, after you got over the general unpleasantness of your surroundings, one of the most engrossing games you'd find on the XBox. You could work to bring down an ancient God King in a volcano, or you could skirt around the island killing diplomats, or ally yourself with one of the warring housing for some Shakespearean feuding, or....erm.....pick flowers in the mages guild....

7 Eternal Darkness

As much as I don't want to steal Spike's thunder, this game belongs in the top 10. The very best of the survival horror genre with an involved story spanning not just generations but epochs and a spirit closer to Lovecraft than any I've played. Amazing magic system, too, that lets you create your own spells.
1. Pac-Man
2. Donkey Kong
3. Super Mario Bros 3
4. Tie-Fighter
5. TETRIS
6. The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
7. Eternal Darkness

8. DOOM
The phenomenon that really kicked off the FPS genre and revolutionized network play, shareware and 3D graphics. Woflenstein was the baby that got things started but DOOM is the adult that kicked shooters into mass acceptance and changed video game development as well as the cultural impact of games ever since.

1. Pac-Man
2. Donkey Kong
3. Super Mario Bros 3
4. Tie-Fighter
5. TETRIS
6. The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
7. Eternal Darkness

8. DOOM

9. Kung Fu Master, the first "beat 'em up" game who started that whole now seemingly lost "genre" if you want to call it that.

Fast paced, with good graphics for the time and music that goes perfectly with the action this game also was one of the earlier titles featuring the "beat the boss" pattern that still persists in video games.

It was ported to the Game Boy, Nintendo, Apple II, Atari 2600/7800, Commodor 64, PlayChoice-10, Sega SG-100, Sinclair and other platforms.

BTW : Tie fighter, great addition!

OK. Well, in my mind when it comes to the Super Mario games, the one that belongs in this list for sure is the first one. One way or the other, it seems to me that the others are just variations of the same game ... Even to this day, they use the same core characters, the same enemy, the same freaking music and basic game mechanics.

Now you could make an argument for things like Super Mario Galaxy, or even better (although not a game I liked that much) Mario 64. But you can't include Super Mario 3 without including the original, or you shouldn't even include both in the same list (that can be argued).
Well it really comes down to "best", "favorite", or "influential" which should be completely different lists.
But should we be including the original template of something, or the game that REFINED that template to its zenith (like SM3 very much did)?

I wasn't sure but I think I agree. Wolfenstein 3D was pretty popular and was also released as shareware, but nobody can argue the success of Doom. However, just to clarify ... that's Wolfenstein 3D ... many don't remember that that game was inspired by "Castle Wolfenstein" from MUSE software. A game that was sort of a precursor to Metal Gear Solid, and one of the first games that included digitized voices.

I'm against having more than one game in the same series on the list for that very reason.

I agree that maybee the first Mario should be in there but having said that I think 3 was a lot of peoples first introduction to the series, (it was for me anyway).

Personally I would have gone with Oblivion over Eldar Scrolls , but that may be for the voicework more than anything else.

I'm of the (perhaps controversial) opinion that sequels shouldn't be included as separate games unless they deviate by leaps and bounds from the initial release. That way, we cover more games and the focus is on comparing completely separate entities instead of quibbling over whether the scrambled or the fried egg is better. And the pinnacle of the series (Super Mario Bros. 3) should stand on its own as representative of that series, not just the first because it was the first.

Ultimately it comes down to innovation vs satisfaction, and I'd rather debate satisfaction. We all know what games were the most groundbreaking, but after the hype has died down, which were the most fun?

ETA: You guys type fast.

The Super Mario vs. Super Mario 3 discussion brings an interesting angle to the conversation. Although I'd side more with 3, since I guess that when you think of Mario the first thing that comes to mind is SM 3. It was then that it's gameplay reached it's defining moment. Same with GTA 3 vs. Vice City. GTA 3 may have moved the series in a new direction but VC still is the definitive GTA experience.
9) Galaga

Most popular shooter of my youth, and the only one that I still play.

When I think of Super Mario I think of the first one, if the newer games don't have those elements from the first one (music, characters, basic platformer mechanics) then I don't consider it a Super Mario game.

But if most of you think Super Mario 3 is the pinnacle of the 2D (or the whole series) that's ok, as long as we don't least too many Super Mario games on the list it's all good.

Mangy; Galaga should be 10 (good addition too)
Yeah if we're only having one Elder Scrolls game then we've either got to go with Daggerfall or Oblivion which are two different beasts, with poor little Morrowind like some mutant half breed of the two. I'll go for Oblivion because it's Shiny and I'm currently going through my 7th playthrough and I've only just started the main quests and factions after 50 hours.
I guess that multiple entries are ok?

I suggest we replace morrowind with Oblivion as its a better game and the rules (ok so they are mine) state one entry per series.
I agree with that. However I think that ElCapitan is kind of batshit insane and his 'originator of ideas' idea should be stricken from the decision making process. Because even though Super Mario Bros. invented the rules, Super Mario World and Super Mario Bros 3 are objectively better games. Same deal with Zelda 1 and a Link to the Past.
Hey I said you guys could keep Super Mario 3, please read. I was just asking a general question when it comes to sequels that are similar to the original.
My view is that playability > history. Hence why I'd place Silent Hill 2 above 1, Resi 4 over 1 and San Andreas over GTA 3.

If someone wants to suggest Mario 3 over SMB then I'm cool with that.
I totally agree that the first game in a series is not necessarily the best. In fact I have a couple of suggestions for later on that reflect that.

I think it comes down to which game is the best in that series, in this sort of case.

And all that means the current list is

1. Pac-Man
2. Donkey Kong
3. Super Mario Bros 3
4. Tie-Fighter
5. TETRIS
6. Oblivion
7. Eternal Darkness
8. DOOM
9. Kung Fu Master,
10. Galaga.
But which of these games is "art"?
1. Pac-Man
2. Donkey Kong
3. Super Mario Bros 3
4. Tie-Fighter
5. TETRIS
6. The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
7. Eternal Darkness
8. DOOM
9. Kung Fu Master
10. Galaga

11. Wasteland

Love Fallout and all its progeny? That game probably doesn't exist if it isn't for Wasteland. While on the surface it seems to be simply Bard's Tale with a post-apocalyptic coat of paint, it's truly an epic adventure in its own right. It's got a sly sense of humor, some great monsters, and some truly inspired areas. The quest inside the robot's head is still one of the most vivid video gaming experiences I've ever had, and Wasteland remains the only game I played all the way through in one sitting (ah, summer vacations and friends with parents out of town and multiple Commodore 64s....). Sure there are RPGs with better graphics and more well-known properties, but 20 years later, this one still pops up first in my mind.
I can't imagine a top 100 list without both Ocarina and LttP, though. How do you get around that one?
1. Pac-Man
2. Donkey Kong
3. Super Mario Bros 3
4. Tie-Fighter
5. TETRIS
6. The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
7. Eternal Darkness
8. DOOM
9. Kung Fu Master
10. Galaga
11. Wasteland

12. Starcraft
. Still is played around the world 10 years later, at least until Starcraft 2. Sure, it didn't started the RTS movement, but it really made it popular.
1. Pac-Man
2. Donkey Kong
3. Super Mario Bros 3
4. Tie-Fighter
5. TETRIS
6. The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
7. Eternal Darkness
8. DOOM
9. Kung Fu Master
10. Galaga
11. Wasteland
12. Starcraft

13. Street Fighter II

See I included a game that was a sequel! :-)

I don't think we need a lot of explanation as to why this game belongs on the list ...
1. Pac-Man
2. Donkey Kong
3. Super Mario Bros 3
4. Tie-Fighter
5. TETRIS
6. The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
7. Eternal Darkness
8. DOOM
9. Kung Fu Master
10. Galaga
11. Wasteland
12. Starcraft.
13. Street Fighter II

14. Chrono Trigger
Arguably the best RPG. Arguably the best VG music. Over a dozen endings. Revolutionary and ambitious storyline.
I think different generations of the same game could probably be classed as different beasts. OoT and LttP operate in such different ways that it'd be hard to choose between them. However I'd throw a wrench in the works and offer up Majora's Mask as the better 3D effort. Anyway lets Burn That Bridge When We Come To It. We need to get 100 titles first.

15. GTA San Andrias.

Although GTA 3 kick started this franchise in a big way. SA is by far the most enjoyble of the series. In fact I recently played it through again and it still holds up.

The charaters, the settings, the things you could do its all better than GTA4. It just goes to prove better graphics and darker story do not a better game make.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

With a crude RPG style inventory system, an epic score and a massive, roamable , castle to explore Castlevania: SotN is perhaps the most striking example of the Castlevania style. Beautiful, baroque, cheesy and difficult as all hell Symphony of the Night might not be the conniseurs choice (I'm sure all you Rondo of Blood Fans are achin' to disagree) but it's a fine example of a series that has had miraculous heights and poisonous lows.

17. Robotron 2084 : Never really got any decent sequels, although it's one of the ultimate "shoot 'em up" games, not to mention that the action was perfect for its 2 joytick control scheme.

The one sequel I read about this game Robotron X, just proves that making a game 3D doesn't mean it's better or more fun.
