The Chud - Greatest video games of all time list. - Page 7

Suggestions then:

Ducktales replaced with SimCity2000

Batman replaced with Burnout 3 (I would say Gran Turismo 3, but I would really rather play Burnout 3 right now, and with GT5 just around the corner . . . )

GORF replaced with Rez or Robotron2084 or SmashTV or something. GORF is cool and all, but we already got some classic arcade machines from that era that cover similar ground in superior fashion.

God Hand needs to be addressed as well. It's a fine game, fun and all, but by no means top 100. From that era, in similar fashion, Devil May Cry is far beyond in execution, skill, and overall quality. In the heads up between DMC and God of War, I would definitely go with DMC.

To make room for Phantasy Star IV, I would say cut One on One. We got NBA Jam Tournament Edition on there; One on One seems to be placed out of deference to its innovation at the time, as opposed to still being something you'd want to dust off and play with any regularity. I think most people who agree PSIV is something you can break out and drop back into it. One v One, you might play with your high school buddies when you're drunk. (I personally roll with NCAA on the SNES for that scenario . . . mode7 is tha shit!)

Also, please replaced Street Fighter 2 with Street Fighter Anniversay Edition, which contains both Street Fighter 2 Anniversary (which lets you choose any character from any version, vanilla on through SuperSF2Turbo) and the phenomenal SF3:3rd Strike. The only argument I can see against this is that this is sort of cheating, but since this is the only way to get SF2 Anniversary, which is inarguably the single most comprehensive version of the game, I would say allow it. Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix (fucking A I love how they managed to jam some more gibberish into the classic title) is the only real alternative to that, but I'll take Turbo Bison vs. Championship E. Honda over online play any day. Put your quarters up, as they say in my household.

Lots of sequels, but I'd go for some of these. No order, and of the first person variety...

Call of Duty 4
Quake Arena
Halo 2(or 3, considering the customization options)
Goldeneye(or Perfect Dark, customization again. And Sims)
Counter-Strike
Timesplitters 2
AvP2 (never played it sadly, but I hear great things!)
Doom (for the original map-making functionality)
Team Fortress 2
Battlefield 2
When you said online I was thinking multiplayer so I got'cha. And honestly I'd say this is pretty much the short list. I'd go with Halo 3 over 2 any day and I didn't really stay with either for far to long out of my absolute hatred of the "Halo-jump." Jump in a real fire fight and see how long you last. Counter-strike has to be on the list because of it's impact for sure but also because it's a pretty solid shooter. TF2 is great, Battlefield 2 for PC is crazy fun and I loved it for quite a bit of time. But for me the best of the bunch is Call of Duty 4.

CoD4 allows you to get so creative with your kills. What other shooter has Claymore's that you can put near a car to make a bigger boom? What other shooter lets you throw C4 at someone and detonate it as it lands next to them? What other shooter lets you jump from a high spot and knife a guy in the neck on the way down like a crazy ninja? CoD4 just simply gave you the tools to kill and leaves the rest up to your imagination. Can you place a claymore near a car, head back across the map to a high spot, then shoot the claymore, making the car blow up to get a kill in any other shooter? If you can, please recommend that game to me.

Sorry for the derail.

Robotron 2084 is already in the list.

I vote Rez. That game is brilliance on so many levels.

'Half-Life2 '?...and NO sign of the original?
For shame CHUD...for shame...
Half Life 2 is the better game and it brought PHYSICS to the world of gaming.

Also Guilty Gear games are ridiculous in their unbalancedness. Anyone whose fought I-No in X2 will attest to how ridiculously cheap those special moves can get. Marvel vs Capcom has some cheapness, but it's a purer more refined game.

Will someone please point out what game does the scrolling beat em up genre better than God Hand?

Good list although I'd say replace Sonic 2 with Sonic CD. It's easily the best of the 16 bit era of Sonic. I'm also sad there isn't room on the list for a Final Fantasy 7 but all the FF games are good so as long as it's represented somewhere, I'm cool.

I'm tempted to let you keep your beloved God Hand based almost entirely on this, but my heart forces me to answer with this.

God dammit, justin, stop being this awesome.
Also, am I the only one who thinks our list would give any current gaming magazine staff a heart attack?
You know, I'll bite and reveal my other two "controversial" choices i didnt submit to the top 100:
-Shin Megami Tensei Persona 3" (PS2): I wanted to submit it because of its originality and the fact that it had the PS2 dominate the best RPG spot in the face of the new consoles. Then again, the game is too anime-ish to be submitted here.
-"Strider" (Arcade-Genesis): Plataforming greatness...and better that ducktales, dammit!

I don't know how this one ducked my radar for this list, but a thousand times YES. I'm still awestruck by how far ahead of its time that game was, and even by today's standards, it does a few things I've rarely seen done right ever since (the reverse/zero gravity level).

Also, for fuck's sake, the first major boss has the Russian Politburo Voltroning itself into a hammer-and-sickle wielding cyborg snake.

Games have tried to be cooler than that. 99% of them fail.

So, you want me to take Ducktales behind the chemical sheds and shoot it?

I propose we move to replace Robotron2084 (dear as it may be to our hearts) with Geometry Wars 2. Motion seconded?

ADDENDUM: Motion rescinded!
Hell no.
No way.

Shit, I must have no idea as to what I am talking about. I do think GeoWars deserves consideration, but I guess it would be redundant.

Two rather obscure suggestions that won't make the list (but I would like them to, obviously) are Super Puzzle Fighter II and The Mark of Kri. Puzzle Fighter 2 strikes me as the second greatest puzzler of them all after Tetris, and the multiplayer is dynamic as hell. Mark of Kri combined an art style, atmosphere, stealth gameplay, a Raven companion that figured more into your gameplay relationship than just about any other virtual ally, and totally awesome melee combat. And zombies. With a little more polish, and some tighter controls (mostly with moving vertically), I would call this a lock. As it is, it is definitely an underappreciated gem of the era, and unlike most anything else out there.

You put SmashTV (for NES!) in your original answer, I'm glad you corrected that :-)

Robotron 2084;
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JZsIyJehtE8

What makes this game great has to be experienced in the arcade version. You have to play it with its two joysticks, unfortunately, the ports often lost that feel to the game. The graphics, color and specially the sound are also elements that you have to take into consideration when evaluating this game. Sure, there are other games that put incredible amounts of crazy stuff for you to kill on the screen, but few approach the awesomeness that is Robotron (or are that memorable).
I deleted SmashTV for clarification purposes, really. With four NES controllers hooked up, using those tiny plastic D-Pads to control movement and firing . . . the thumb pain would become nigh unbearable, yet no moment could be wasted. One of my fondest memories is of playing through to Level 3-whatever (have no idea if you can actually beat the game), listening to massive drum n' bass and feeling the horrible intensity of enemy onslaughts combined with brain rattling hand pain. Probably not good for the health, and also not a good argument to get something admitted to a top 100 list, but the physical toll that control configuration ended up taking on you just amps the challenge up to stupendous levels. I wax nostalgic, surely, but has anyone else played SmashTV with the multitap setup (has to be 2-player - part of the appeal is finally getting a rest for your battered digits and coming from behind to overtake your smug friend with a massive VCR prize score)?

I would kill to have a local Robotron arcade machine, but those days are long passed. It's a god damned tragedy, if you ask me.

As a case-study in the genre's gameplay, I submit: Guardian Heroes.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ImuUd...eature=related

Crazy leveling, four player madness, fantastic sprites. Holds up better than TMNTIV, which is a classic, but it occassionally suffers from 'Final Fight' syndrome, wherein you just spam a couple moves against waves of extremely similar enemies. Guardian Heroes has none of that.

However, being that God Hand is one-player, my final answer to this question would be: Viewtiful Joe.

Also: no love for Panzer Dragoon Saga? I guess because no has ever played it. I am assured by trusted sources it lives up to the hype; I really wish I could say firsthand.

In that category I like "Golden Axe" (arcade), but not sure I would add it to this list.

Thread Starter
much as i love it, Golden Axe was basically Alien War, Streets of Rage or any other side scroller of that era.

The only thing that makes it different is the fantasy setting.

I'm wishing I'd found room for Barberian on the cpc 464....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barbarian_(Palace_Software)

I used to love the decapatation move, if only for the little guy who would come on screen after and remove the body while kicking the head off screen

That was my jam back in the day! My friend always played as the dwarf, and I always kicked him off a cliff. I was an asshole.

I definitely prefer...Capcom's Dungeons and Dragons side scrollers and Midway's Gauntlet when it comes to fantasy games. Also, where are Capcom's Mercs, SNK's Metal Slug and Konami's Time Pilot? I would place them all in the top 10. Also missing is Midway's Narc and Total Carnage along with Capcom's The Punisher, and Konami's X-Men.
Fine games, one and all, but by no means indisputable legends! The only one there that a case may be made for is the 4 player X-Men arcade beat-em-up.
Zhukov, Outside of...Contra, the greatest 2D shooter franchise is...Metal Slug.
