3. Super Mario Bros 3
4. Tie-Fighter
5. TETRIS
6. The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
7. Eternal Darkness
8. DOOM

18. Diablo 2. You could argue that the first one had a better atmosphere but this set such a high bar for gameplay in terms of addictiveness and balance that no one, even after all these years, even tried to surpass.

19. The Secret Of Monkey Island. The game that gave rise to arguably the funniest series of adventure games of all time AND earned LucasArts the reputation it so richly deserved.

Our list is already better than the Empire one, and covers a larger time frame!!!

Just in case Justin doesn't get this one

20) Silent Hill 2

There's a lot of talk about art in videogames, that's nonsense you play videogames to shoot things and squish things. Silent Hill 2 cleverly combines squishing things with an actual thought process to its design and concept. Trapped inside a hellish creation of your protagonists mind, you find your characters twisted unfulfilled libido haunting him in the shape of attractively gruesome nurses and his guilt manifest as a gigantic dude with a triangular face mask. It's an evocative and sad tale and it's told masterfully through the use of a clever script, even when burdened with at times lacklustre voice actors, and a haunting score. It's a powerful adult game and it's the closest games will ever get to having truly interesting subtext, plus it's an arty game that doesn't require you to weep over the murder of big giant furry dog/sheep/golem thingies.

19. The Secret Of Monkey Island.
20 Silent Hill 2

21. Earthbound
A truly misunderstood gem. An RPG set in the modern day. Something that has never really been done sense in the way Earthbound did. Filled with aliens, Mr. Saturns, bottle rockets, zombies, blobs, ninjas and all sorts of other crazy crap (Did I mention you fight the police...with pyshic powers no less!). A real damn shame the sequel never got going on the N64 or released on the DS.

22. Tecmo Super Bowl
Stat tracking, full season mode, all the licensed players and teams, tons of play choices. Plus, Emmit Smith.

22. Tecmo Super Bowl

23. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic - Too early for this? Maybe, but this is always hovering around my favorite-game-of-all-time spot. Its the best Star Wars game, bar none. Huge world to explore, great characters, and a storyline that was better than the entire prequel trilogy. And who didn't have fun killing and robbing innocents as you traveled down the path of the dark side?

Having finally played Rondo of Blood via a friend's PSP, I can say with certainty, while it's still an awesome game, worth the hype and all that, Symphony's still the better game. However, it owes a lot of its success to....

1. Pac-Man
2. Donkey Kong
3. Super Mario Bros 3

21. Earthbound
22. Tecmo Super Bowl
23. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

24. Super Metroid

Still the absolute pinnacle of the 16 bit era as far as action gaming goes. Perfect difficulty ramping and level design, chock full of secrets, amazing sound and scoring that pushes that system beyond what even the most jaded SNES fanboy thought capable, the atmosphere is set from the title screen (how many games, let alone from that era, open up with a screen full of dead people?), and the experience just gets richer, creepier, and more rewarding from there. Prime does a lot of this right too, but that game feels like, well, a really fantastic Gamecube game. This one just feels timeless every time I play it.

25. Super Mario RPG - Legend of the Seven Stars

A JRPG through and through but one helluva a swan song for the SNES. Not to mention Mallow is so cute as the cloud kid who thinks he's a frog. Real shame neither he nor Geno ever show up again.

Although I admit I've never really played any of its sequels, so I'm open to somebody suggesting a better entry in the series.

But great platformer game with power ups that make sense, the ability to play as a frog and be hard as hell while still being a fun game.

BTW: Man, already 3 Mario games eh ...

Perhaps one of the best licenced games. Sure its short and it's pretty much Mega Man reskinned, but don't tell me that wasn't one of the funniest games ever to exist out on the NES.

A completely unconventional fighter, Melee is both incredibly fun casually and still has a hardcore tournament following. The fact that new techs are still being discovered 8 years after is pretty amazing. Very original. And yes Brawl sucks.

32. Gauntlet

This game was what three of my friends and I spent our summers sinking quarters into all summer the year it first appeared in arcades. A four player D&D-like dungeon explorer. And who isn't familiar with at least one of the digitized instructions by the invisible narrator? This is just a fun time waster, hands down. I still play this with friends every once in awhile.
Hey guys, stop copying the list with the missing number for the Robotron entry.

EDIT: Gauntlet, yes finally. I'm glad somebody else added it.

Also a great way to play multiplayer. Just 4 people in a huge arcade cabinet big enough to put drinks and waste hours upon hours of killing demons.

The only thing in the world that could make the teachings of Ayn Rand tolerable. What sells this game is the unique setting and atmosphere. Don't tell me the first time time you played this you weren't getting wigged out by it.
Right let's get some debate going

I'll leave it up to you guys to decide which one makes the cut

Ocarina of Time or Majora's Mask

Both games were made for the N64 and were core elements.

Ocarina of Time is generally regarded as one of the greatest games ever made and it's grand sweep of a story is hard to beat. Its scope was incredible, it still has one of the best control methods of any of the Zelda games, it's progression was flawless, it's story surprising and often emotional. In short Ocarina of Time was a cultimation of everything that Zelda could be, with eight dungeons to explore. Cities to manouevre around and huge open areas to traverse OoT constantly offered the sort of moments that made other games pale in comparison.

It's autistic twin brother Majora's Mask whilst it didn't have the ambition or sweep of Ocarina had a massive amount of heart and a core idea that is to me one of the most succesful gimmicks in videogames. The idea of repeating the same day, groundhog day style, was initially tedious but this routine that the citizens of Terminia followed so strictly offered perhaps the greatest chance of interaction in any of the series. To know what they were going to do and to try and shape their destinies over those three days was to become embroiled in the fate of Terminia on a personal level. There's a general sense of melancholy to Majora's Mask, all the important character beats are about death and inevitable rebirth and for that it was given the label of the 'dark' Zelda task. But Majora's Mask was gaming at it's most humane, it implored you to like these characters, it wanted you to feel guilty that you'd force a citizen out of his hotel room to shiver on the streets on his last day, it made you want to help two doomed lovers, because the futility of the grand quest demanded these small acts of mercy.Plus Terminia whilst being smaller than Hyrule was densely packed and always offering new challenges from racing against a pair of beavers down waterfalls, to fighting undead kings, to infilitrating pirate hideouts, to rocking out with a mermaid band, to fightning mechanical bulls atop ice towers. Majora's Mask was legitimately challenging and charming and it tried something different.

So it's your call

37. Half-Life 2. Still the pinnacle of first person shooters. Looks great, plays great and tells its admittedly unoriginal story in an awesome way. Plus in Alyx and DOG Valve has created the only computer sidekicks that never induced feelings of homicidal rage to me.

I haven't played Rock Band yet - I just saw Guitar Hero as the trailblazer. But since it'd be retarded to have both on the list, if more people agree I'm more than willing to switch the two.

Bioshock is so good, so god until you meet Andrew Ryan. It's one of the best games of this generation and then it becomes improbably tedious. But the entire segment with Sander Cohen makes it worth it.

40. Zombies Ate My Neighbors

Everyone I've ever talked to who has played this game has loved it. A two player, simultaneous adventure as both characters have to leap over fences and run around suburbia while taking out various enemies like zombies and demon babies. Plus, it's filled with some pretty funny gags that help elevate it to a classic.

Because there aren't any racing games listed and this one was the best. Sleek, weaponized, and was the first racing game where I actually felt the sensation of speed. The design flourishes were revelatory.

Hell no (on Superman 64).

Day of the Tentacle ... I already included Maniac Mansion. Open to have that one replace it (I've never played DotT).

In all seriousness, we pretty much covered all of this in Tati's Video Game Draft. Why are we reinventing the wheel?

Yeah. This feels like a poor man's re-hash.

Maybe everyone should have just slapped their draft choices up in one big beast of a list(and non-drafters could add a few), and we could have thinned it down from there.

Here's the chosen list...

As for this one, I'd argue Ms. Pac-Man over the original. It had cinemas! Glorious glorious cinemas! Hahaha.
Well why don't the guys who weren't involved in the draft continue this, and the guys involved in the draft do whatever the hell.
I was seeing if anyone would notice, and I fooled one of you.

Ms. is way better than Mr Pac
