Detroit: Almost Unfathomable lack of Retail Stores

Pretty remarkable article. When you hear that Detroit essentially has zero grocery stores, and only FOUR STARBUCKS (I think I have five without a mile of me), shit just got real.

At least you can buy a house for a hundred bucks:

I mean, it will be in awful shape, but 100 bucks? I wonder how many people are going to claim the "25K for moving to downtown Detroit" package.
Well, I guess people who really dislike chain stores know where they can go.

Indeed. Now, go get your shine box.
What the hell does that even mean?
How can any self professed lover-of-cinema not recognize that quote?
He's trying to insult you as a character who, if this scenario plays out, you will kill for being a dick.
Well I've never seen Overlord post about films, so I thought Goodfellas might be beyond him.

'self professed lover-of-cinema'? What kind of bullshit is that? This is Chud, you're a lover of cinema as soon as you sign up.
Do we need to break out the list of people who have never said a damn thing about film?
Careful, Ed- we might then get started on people who frequently post just for the sake of posting.

Good point Alex. Who knows what lists are being tabulated right now.

You'd be a top contender to headline it.

Can you really be that unaware of what you post here everyday?

Come on, guys. Let's not turn this into a 'Let's beat on Ed' thread.
Yeah, didn't mean to start a pileon. Besides, he's not the worst offender. (That would be Domingo.)

Uh, but yeah, how about that Detroit! Where's Death Surge when you need him?
It's weird, I found the Detroit situation hilarious until I found out about the packs of roving dogs. Frozen tramps a-ok, pack of wolven 'fuck that shit'. It's just weird that no one is attempting to do anything.
I grew up outside of Detroit. I'm glad to be out of that shit-hole. The city set itself up for complete ruin & failure with the constant stream of horrendous politicians that they kept re-electing.
I've never been to Detroit, but I've NEVER heard anything good about it from people that have either lived there or visited it. Everything that I read about it seems to indicate that it's dangerously close to becoming either a ghost town or Bartertown.

Yeah, it is not hilarious. It is horrifying and very VERY sad. The ultimate case of a one-industry city with a corrupt as fuck political system.

ETA: Ah. Obligatory Robocop reference.
That, I believe is the guy who played Mayor Kuzak in Robocop 2. That's just a guess though.
Really, Ed? Really?
Okay ya got me. I never finished Robocop 2. *Dramatic music*

I know, huge fucking shock.
I give up. Anyone else want to explain it to him?

It's got a rich musical heritage, but I really got nothing else.

It can't be done. He just does not get it.

It's funny, Bradford was at the heart of the Union disputes of the 1980s so I know what it feels like to be living and have grown up in a town rotting from the inside. Bradford had been a really strong city up until the 1930s, but the demand for wool (our major industry) dried up and then in the 1980s we stopped mining for coal which was our tertiary industry. So essentially Bradford is just massive warehouses now, where medium sized companies can buy cheap office space. It's terrible because Leeds, where I live now, is about 10 miles down the road and is a complete boomtown, new industry, new funding, new projects and it means that Bradford is never going to be regenerated or reconstructed.
Okay, who is he? I honestly don't know. Calm the fuck down and just give the answer. Enough of the guessing games.
Ed, do you block ads? If not, I suspect you fund my entire paycheck.
If only there was an image URL with a full name on it!
But I think Ed knows this and is just filling his daily post quota.
Fuck quotas. My man's aiming for the STARS!

Funny this thread should show up today. Over lunch today, one of my co-workers, who rarely joins us for lunch, was eating with us, and others were asking about his kids. One of his sons just graduated from college, w/ a degree in physics. he's currently working on a research project w/ a prof, and looking to go to grad school. Where's he live? Detroit. And, according to his dad, the kid (by all accounts a brainiac) LOVES Detroit. I immediately thought of Overlord and his whimsical Detroit threads. There is indeed a fine line between genius & insanity. Feel free to apply that to the grad school kid or Overlord, as you prefer.
Detroit blows. And I love Overlord's anti-Detroit crusade.
I'm not sure why any citizen would celebrate the decline and dereliction of a once-vibrant American city, but, you know, whatever.

Ever been there?
Nope. It deserves to die? It's something we should laugh about and celebrate? A ruined Detroit is good for our country?

I'm not trying to be an old fart here, they've been making Detroit jokes since Kentucky Fried Movie. Now that the reality of its failure is becoming concrete I just don't find it worthy of applause, is all.
Detroit is nothing to laugh at, but it's one of those situations where all you can do is laugh. It's the prime example of what happens when the political system is corrupt as fuck and the citizens can see it happening around them, but lack the resolve to do anything about it.

Personally, I don't see how Detroit happened, when so many other cities in the midwest are thriving (Omaha, Chicago, Milwaukee). Guess it goes to show you don't put all of your eggs in one basket.

Because its pretty funny, in a Mad Max kind of way, to realize that a city with 900.000 , give or take, citizens isnt worth a single grocery store.
I mean, its as if there was some silent conspiracy to try and fuck up Detroit on purpose.

900k people got needs. You can make money off of these needs. The fact apparently nobody bothers with it is hilarious.
Well, I guess you cant "buy that for dollar" in Detroit.

Not hit up a grocery store or Starbucks, that's for sure. Maybe drive a pack of feral dog-wolves away from a half frozen corpse?
The Wings were all they had left. What do Detroitians have to look forward to now? Feral dogs? Frozen hobos? The god damn Lions? No wonder retailers have tucked tail and ran.

Note Iggy that many people who refer to Detroit are actually referring to what's known as "Metro Detroit", which includes a variety of other smaller surrounding cities, many of which are very nice. The main city itself is a different story.

I live in actual Detroit on the river front, and despite what that article may claim, there is a rather nice grocery store around the corner. It is it is one of the few I'm aware of though (there's one by University of Detroit, and Wayne State University if I'm not mistaken) and for general purpose shopping, it's definitely a drive to a mall in the burbs if you can't find it online.

Bolstered by the fall of the Harbortown market, the incendiary rapegangs set their sights on Enclave 6, Detroit's last impregnable - or so it would seem - luxury living facility.

High above the streets from his Enclave 6 Penthouse suite, Death Surge nervously twirled a plastic whiskey swizzle between his fingers.

It had begun.
