Detroit: Almost Unfathomable lack of Retail Stores - Page 2

Holy Shit. They literally just updated that in the past couple of hours. We normally don't go there very often (My wife shops at a place by her work on the way home since they tended to be more expensive) but I had zero idea there was a fire.

Now I need to check for rampaging hordes, and verify the liquor store is still in one piece.

This is not a coincidence.

They went after his grocery store, now they're going for him!

To quote from the Yahoo article..."A few retailers are thriving. Family Dollar Stores Inc. has opened 25 outlets since 2003."

So in Detroit you can by something for a dollar.

All kidding aside, no national grocery chain in a city of 900K. I guess they all have gardens and slaughter their own animals for meat.

Aldi is a discount food store chain I remember from growing up outside of Chicago.

I can understand losing Starbucks but when you can not even get a Wal-Mart grocery store (and yes they have those) it is truly a sad situation for the honest people trying to live there.

Also check for mangy dogs searching in vain for a place to die.

Hmm didnt we have someone talking about rabid chimps throwing vials with aids-infected blood in another thread about Detroit?

That was pure hyperbole, the chimps were NOT rabid.

Saw in interesting CBC doc on Detroit a while back, wasn't aware of some of the truly lovely art and architecture in the downtown, or the quality of the public transportation. They did show a fella who trapped and sold raccoon meat, and how nature is gradually reclaiming parts of the city - one of the few upsides of the gradual loss of population.

Decent people should live there. They'd be happier somewhere else!

I feel bad that somebody burned down Surge's only good supermarket, but when that page came up, I was paralyzed with laughter for like fifteen seconds. The giant frowny OOPS! face pushes it over the edge for me.

I would have had a similar reaction, if I had thought it was real. It wasn't until Death Surge's anguished cry of soon-to-be-starvation that I began to guffaw and chortle wildly.

The ONLY way I 'know' Detroit is via the 'Discovery Channel'...
Specifically 'Animal Planet's' 'Animal Cops: Detroit'...

Much like the CSI series, 'Animal Planet' has 'Animal Cop' series set up in varied locales...namely Houston, Philadelphia, San Fransisco, New York City, Phoenix and Miami...but it's the desolation of Detroit that will ALWAYS freak me out.

I feel for Surge...(but then again, he's probably been mistr/eating 'hobo-wolves', so fuck'im!)
