DEAD SNOW Post Release

Your review pretty much confirmed my fears from the trailer. It looked like a well-shot fan film. The reference to Family Guy-style genre riffing definitely killed my interest. There's just no room for a zombie movie that has nothing to bring to the table except drawing from the viewer's love of other zombie movies.

The sad part is that idiotkids (and by kids I mean the idiot internet/Digg crowd) are going to sing this movie's praises simply by the novelty of NAZI ZOMBIES.

Both of these films are drowning in American genre references, and you wonder if people in these countries are making their own genre stuff or just endlessly quoting our genre stuff.
The Norwegian film industry didn't really start producing straight up horror movies until fairly recently, and sadly, yes, they're basically only quoting your genre stuff. The big movies up until Dead Snow have been slashers or TCM style survival horror and the most "Norwegian" thing about them is that some of them are (surprise) set in the mountains in winter.

That being said, and not trying to excuse anything, since genre filmmaking is kinda new over here, they're still finding their footing, so to speak.

But it's sad, really, since we have so much stuff to pick from in folk tales and mythology (and I don't mean fucking Thor either).

My main problem with Red Snow (apart from a lot of the stuff Devin said) was that I wish Wirkola had picked a tone. Some people (Raimi, Jackson, Wright) can do tone shifts. Our boy Tommy W can't...

ETA: Hey, my first real post. And it's about a Norwegian movie. Sticking to my strengths, I guess.
You know, I don't post alot on here, but I read a ton. I would bet nearly all my posts are positive posts about the movie I have seen. I will watch anything. A friend said that my motto should be "If they take the time to make a movie, I should take the time to see it."

So when I saw Dead Snow show up on Cox OnDemand last weekend, I remembered some buzz about it on CHUD, so I decided to check it out. I can count on one hand the amount of times I got so bored with a movie that I stopped it. This was one of those times. I wasted 4.99 (maybe 5.99) on the 30 minutes or so of this movie that I tried to watch.

However, when I saw Devin did a review I thought "We'll, maybe if I had stuck it out, there was something amazing and cool on the way." Guess not. The most I can identify with the review was the absolute boredom I felt with those 30 mins I tried. I mean, how bored do you have to be to not stick with a movie for another hour or so? Pretty fucking bored.

Fuck, even Nazis come from Germany.
I just have to nitpick this comment a bit (even if I absolutely see your point in context). Norway was occupied by Nazi Germany for 5 years, and that kind of thing tends to have an impact on a nation's "cultural subconscious" or whatever you wanna call it.
Or to put it another way: No Norwegian would ever think that way about a Norwegian-set movie containing nazis, regardless of it being a silly zombie movie or a serious war movie.

Movie still sucks, though...

The positive buzz surrounding Dead Snow is just further proof that horror fans (myself included) are the least discerning movie fans of all.
It's not necessarily that we're not discerning, at least not inherently. It's more like desperation that leads to a lowering of standards. We're always chasing that next great horror film that's going to satisfy us the same way our old favorites do, and that leads to a lot of people glomming onto anything that superficially pushes the right buttons even if it's actually not so good. Like this one, apparently.

Thanks for confirming my suspicions on this one before I possibly risked the price of a ticket. I watched my DVD of Shock Waves only last week and I'd rather just watch it again.

But, I gotta say, you could use a lot of that review to sum up exactly how I felt about Doomsday, a waste of my time and money that just paraded out scenes from other movies with no interesting spin on them.

Whatever. Thank God for Drag Me To Hell. On that, we can agree.
Yeah, this is pretty much what I expected. The premise is cool, but it was extremely easy to fall into fan film territory with this. Now to convince my friends why this probably isn't worth its ticket price. That's gonna be a doozy.

Yeah, I can't remember my friends being as stoked about any movie as they are for this one. I practically had to drag them to the theater for Slither and SoTD, and yet they're chomping at the bit for this one.

I chuckled at hammer and sickle gag, but otherwise Dead Snow was a real waste of time.

Found out that Wirkola made a parody of Kill Bill called Kill Buljo which judging from the trailer looks even worse.
Just you wait. Wirkola's english-language debut is reportedly going to be "Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters", with Adam McKay and Will Ferrel in some sort of producing capacity.
He's threatening to make a couple of Kill Buljo sequels first, though...

Fear not horror fans, you have GRACE and TRICK R' TREAT to look forward to.

I saw GRACE at USC last week with a friend who had seen DEAD SNOW the week before and loved it. After the movie he said that he hated GRACE so now I know his taste is entirely suspect.

Guess this sort-of positive Slant review was written by a non-horror fan. Seems to me that watching this after Drag Me to Hell would make it even more insufferable.

in many ways this highly derivative, second- (or possibly third-) generation blood-and-titter flick is more appropriate to juxtapose with Sam Raimi's latest offering than, say, the original Evil Dead, because it captures the voracious cadence of an impassioned conversation about slasher romps without trumping the sanguine delirium of the genre's zenith.
That Slant review was barely readable. There's a difference between having a broad vocabulary and just jerking off with words.
Ugh, this film...

Better to try out 1977's Shock Waves, 2000's The Bunker, 2006's Horrors of War (not that this one is particularly great either) or 2008's Outpost than this.

In a film chock full of Nazi zombies seeking their Jew gold, intestine mountain climbing and self-amputation, the most incredulous moment of all remains the hot chick having sex with the fat 'tard while he's taking a dump. What the what?!?

Otherwise, I agree with Dev's take, although I can't quite muster his level of hate. And, yeah, the hammer and sickle gag was kind of great.
The sanguine delirium of the genre's zenith! Slant is a slog to read, written like an academic paper, and always throwing out big hyperbolic words together that just...argh...annoy.

Agreed with what Devin said too, but I didn't have as high of an expectation from this film as he did.

The difference is, DOOMSDAY had an energy through it and more than cursory references. DEAD SNOW does not.

You know, I didnt actually think that this movie was that bad. It had its good moments, and a lot of bad ones...but overall it was laughable entertainment.

I just think that for all its obvious inspirations, it was so... UNinspired.
