Empire: Total War

Anybody playing this? From what I've seen, it looks absolutely stunning, but I've heard too many bad things about buggy installs and Steam issues to drop $50. Can anybody vouch?

I love all the previous Total War games, but just don't have the time to devote to a new one right now. I know there were issues at launch, but they've patched it several times since to fix all known issues, and have started patching in new content. Should be A-OK to buy, long as you know the depravity of the addiction you'll be purchasing.

It's also 50% off this weekend on Steam. If I was any damn good at strategy games I'd pick this up in a heartbeat.

I can't run that I guess, so I'll re-install Rome and have fun.

Was the re-issue of Medieval worth playing?

Rome was my favourite. The new one looks splendid, but i've had little chance to play it on a friend's rig. My PC's nowhere near advanced enough to make it run as beautifully as Rome did.

I actually went ahead and bought this, because I want to fight those amazing-looking naval battles. Man, those look incredible. I imagine I'm gonna miss having a physical manual though, that's really the only drawback for buying digital versions of games. PDF manuals bite.

Don't bother with Medieval II if you already have Rome. Its not from the same core team that did Rome, and its generally sloppy. All the Middle East nations get fucked over as well.

Empire is amazing however, the mechanics have been redefined, and city building is a lot more interesting, seeing as you can actually see what your doing.

Yeah, I'll take the plunge too if it's half off.

I was prepared to hate the install, but it wasn't bad at all.

So, the naval battles:

Aside from a few moments in Crysis: Warhead, the battles are maybe the best thing I've ever seen on a monitor. I've yet to dive into the campaign, but so far, the game is Civilization/Rome/Sid Meier's Pirates, but way better looking than all of them.

Do the U.S. tutorial before heading into the game, you'll get a better feel for the new style, and you'll unlock the United States for the Grand Campaign.

Amen. This is one gorgeous game.

There's supposed to be a big patch released tomorrow the 22nd. Dunno if it'll hit Steam right away though.

Tracking just above a squad of colonist militiamen as they tear into a band of natives makes me feel almost guilty enough to offset how great this game looks. This is to Rome what Rome was to Shogun.

Advisor lady's voice is annoying as fuck, though. I pine for the the cold ruthlessness of the Rome lady.

I hate you people. My machine can't even install this.

I picked the game up a little over a week ago at gamestop (bastards)... I honestly didn't even read the manual.

probably why I'm struggling. (that and I've put the game on hold for the AWESOME Prototype)

Is Medieval II really held in such low esteem? I actually ended up preferring it to Rome after a while. I keep flirting with installing Empire, but I’m only halfway through the campaign in Medieval II. What’s the strategic element in Empire like? I found myself playing Medieval II and, to a lesser extent, Rome more like games of Risk than tactical battle simulators.

There's an honest-to-god story component to Empire's single player campaigns, as well as nation-specific victory conditions, so it's more of a tailormade experience than Rome or Medieval II. You can also play the Risk way, too.

Update 1.3: support for multithreading. Oh, and 14 free units. Also, $3.50 DLC with 14 more units.

woo hoo!

Glad to see some of the bugs have been fixed, my game kept crashing on me. Also glad they fixed the AI turn timer, one time it took so long for the British to do move I thought my PC locked up.

This game is so very, very great.

After wrestling a little with the idea of micromanaging towns, I've come to love the flexibility. Empire might be replacing Civilization IV as my favorite strategy game. My only major gripe: Besieging cities isn't as interesting or fun as it was in Rome. While each city might have a different infrastructure, they all look like the same lame wooden fort in the assault.

I'm guessing their next title will be some type of expansion? Hopefully something on the American frontier.
