Stars made this summer

What movie stars were "made" or discovered this summer?

Chris Pine is surely the main one, after Star Trek, i bet he'll be everywhere. Too bad he chose Tony Scott to follow through.

Sam Worthington? T4 didn't break any records, but out of all of the players, him and Yelchin came out on top. And both are looking great in the future.

Bradley Cooper? Or was it more of a team effort?
Out of those three I'd say we're gonna see Bradley Cooper the most. He's been deserving of a breakout for awhile, and I'd like to see the Green Lantern rumbling come to fruition.

But to this day the first thing I think of when I see him is still Will Tippin.

Yes. It annoyed me a little bit every time I heard him called the guy from Wedding Crashers, not that there's anything wrong with Wedding Crashers, but now all that's gone and he is Bradley Cooper of The Hangover fame.
He might not have been made a "star", but Dileep Rao really got my attention in Drag Me to Hell, thought he was fantastic.

Pine and Worthington for sure.

For that matter, even though she's been around for awhile, I'd like to see Alison Lohman get a career boost.
I think The Hangover is just as much of a breakout film for Zach Galifanakis as Cooper, albeit not necessarily as a "movie star" but as the next big comic actor
post #7 of 87
Actually, I think Ed Helms has a better chance at a career boost from The Hangover than Galifianakis. For one thing, his name doesn't frighten people. And he's got that Daily Show thing going for him.
You mean The Office, he hasn't been on The Daily Show for a good long while. But yeah, Helms should get a nice little boost from The Hangover.
No, I mean The Daily Show. It's the new Saturday Night Live when it comes to launching comedy stars. The Office is already culturally irrelevant.
Maybe not a "star", but the kid who played the younger brother in Tetro turned in a great performance and he looks like a young DiCaprio, so I'm sure that'll net him a couple big roles in the future.
Although co-starring in a Denzel Washington/Tony Scott film wasn't the first thing to come to mind, it is nonetheless a smart move of Pine to do a film that isn't in the genre as Star Trek.

Worthington walked away from Terminator: Salvation unscathed (which instead went to McG and Bale). But he's still a big question-mark. Avatar and Clash of the Titans will be what makes or breaks him.

Reminds me of Brandon Routh. Everyone thought he was fine as the Man of Steel, but he didn't go out and nabb other roles the moment Superman wrapped instead waiting to see how the film would be received.

From The Hangover, I'd say all three parties (Cooper, Galifanakis and Helms) benefit.

Speaking of Bale, is the the opposite? Did he prove once more that he's NOT a star?
Batman makes money, not Christian Bale.

Also, i don't think McG was all that hurt. The movie is doing fine worldwide and it wasn't a total wreckage.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but Salvation was the first Terminator film to not open at #1 domestically. And it was headlined by Bale who was coming off The Dark Knight. Yeah, I'd say this proves once and for all that he's not a movie-star.

It was going to do solid numbers in the foreign markets. That was a given. But it's doing piss-poor in the U.S. despite hardcore marketing, a PG-13 rating, the aforementioned this being Bale's TDK follow-up, and a prime Memorial Day release date.

Even if Fighting wasn't exactly a breakout hit, Channing Tatum could be huge after Joe. And Chris Hemsworth aka Kirk's old man? Or do we wait for Thor for that?

As for girls, Talulah Riley should. Ditto for Rachel Nichols.

Kirk's Dad a star already? C'mon. Yeah, let's wait for Thor and see how that goes.

Nichols also, let's wait for G.I. Joe, being Green and Naked for 2 minutes in Star Trek doesn't make you a Star.
Yeah, I meant for GI Joe. Even if Sienna Miller is unquestionably the star in it.
Channing Tatum? I thought it was a foregone conclusion that G.I. Joe was going to tank.

Chris Pine all the way. I'm still amazed at how effectively he REPLACED William Shatner as James T. Kirk in my mind. He has the looks and the natural charisma to go VERY far in his career.
Let's not get crazy here.
I think the big names have already been hit upon. I think you can maybe add Zoe Saldana to the list as well, albeit to a lesser extent.

Replaced? Ouch. I wasn't aware Shatner was broken and needed to be replaced.
I actually think in a bizarre way Terminator Salvation probably turned a lot of people around on McG. The bit of praise there is for the film is for McG as an action director and the negative reviews seem to be focusing more on the scripting, acting and Christian Bale more than anything else. I honestly feel like Bale, due to what happened in the run up to the film, took the worst of it for Salvation’s failure. I’m not a particular fan of his but it’s looking like Bale’s never going to be bankable in the way that he wants to be. The interviews with him always suggested he had a ‘one for them/one for me’ approach to his roles but if he can’t secure a franchise like Terminator then he’s probably going to have to take a lot more smaller ‘one for them’ roles.

I actually expect Zachary Quinto to go places. I hated him on Heroes, but he thoroughly surprised me in Star Trek.

I honestly got the impression that people were lined up to despise Chris Pine in this film (it certainly didn't help that the posters made him look like a pedophile). Now, all that anyone talks about is just HOW GOOD he was in the role and how he did his own thing while channeling just enough Shatner to provide some character continuity.

A potential star was definitely born.
Another star made this Summer: Dug the dog. He absolutely stole every scene that he was in. I really hope that we haven't seen the last of him or the other talking dogs; perhaps we can at least get a short film of him before the next Pixar film.
It's pretty standard procedure for Pixar DVD's to include a new short that includes characters from the movie. If this one doesn't include Dug, I'll be shocked.

Please no, please no, please no. He was awful in both. I have no idea if "Spock-as-fey" was his choice or Abrams but either way it was a bad idea.
I liked Quinto as Spock, mainly because he DIDN'T mimic Nimoy. That decision was slightly fucked by the bad call of tying this Trek to existing Trek through the use of Nimoy, but hey.

Based on Star Trek? She had such a little role. If anything, Pirates of the Caribbean should have propelled her career. Maybe it did, which is why she was cast in Star Trek But I don't think Trek shows off her star qualities at all.

Yes. He was by far one of the worst actors on Heroes, but I totally loved him in Trek. I'd definitely be piqued by any movie that has him as a lead.
I, too, was impressed by Quinto in Star Trek.

I keep forgetting she was even in the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie. I knew I recognized her face, but couldn't place it. She had nothing to do in that movie. I think you're right in that her role in Pirates was just something that could go on her resume and show casting directors that she looks good on the screen. Trek is simply another step. Not nearly a star yet.

I was shocked that I liked Quinto as Spock. But the only role I'll be interested in seeing him in is Spock for the time being.

It's probably just me, but I found Zoe more memorable in Pirates than Trek. She was a captain, worthy of verbally sparring with Jack Sparrow. All she does in Trek is swoon like a love struck teenager. I'll admit, having known her from her earlier work may have put her on my radar prior to Pirates, so I was already primed to notice her.
I think the fact that she wasn't brought back for the sequels had a lot to do with me forgetting about her.
What role did she have in the original Pirates? I can't even find her on the IMDB cast list!

I meant the PoC cast list, you have to go into the miscellaneous cast and crew section to find her.
Right. Like most of the rest of the supporting cast. She wasn't important enough. I think she got screwed over by IMDB's standard cutoff for the main page. Heheh.
Again, I found her memorable. More so than in Trek.

I completely forgot she was in Pirates. I just want to state my opinion that "Channing Tatum: Star!" is probably never going to happen.
Holy shit, she actually has a character arc and everything and I completely forgot she existed. When you're getting upstaged by Verne Troyer and some motherfucker with a seeing eye parrot then you've got trouble.
If Verne Troyer were actually in a Pirates of the Caribbean movie, I'd hate them all.
Who is the midget then?

Edit: Martin Klebba is apparentley the go to midget when your budget can't afford the Troyer.

Ain't it da truth.
Hmm. I completely forgot there was midget in Pirates. Different strokes.
Martin showed up on Scrubs every now and again.
Yeah, saying Star Trek may have made Zoe Saldana a star is not what I really meant. Raised her profile, is what I was trying to say. Poorly. Certainly, Star Trek did more for Zoe Saldana and Terminator did for Moon Bloodgood. Or anybody in Wolverine.
'Yes' to Pine, 'not-quite-yet' for Worthington and a 'hell yeah' to Cooper, Helms and Galifinakis.

I find it kinda sad we're not talking about Patrick Wilson, Jeffrey Dean Morgan or Jakcie Earle Hailey tho personally.

Don't get me wrong, I understand completely why we're not mentioning them, it just seems a shame is all.
Definitely. If Watchmen had hit, it would have given quite a few careers a shot in the arm.
Ryan Reynolds, maybe?
