Stars made this summer - Page 2

Also, when did Watchmen come out again? Because I seem to remember seeing that in 40 degree weather.
Except for the last few posts, I haven't heard of nearly any of the people you guys are naming as "stars" save for Chris Pine, who I really do think is going to be an "A-lister" for a while. He has that "it" quality I guess, whatever it is.

ETA: Same with Cooper.

Blomkamp? He's surely on many radars right now.

Eli Roth? I'd happily watch him in acting roles for years, especially if it meant saving us from more Hostel Part IIs.

Christoph Waltz deserves some proper attention and parts, but that's like saying Bruno Ganz was gonna become an international star after Downfall.

I'd have to say the summer belongs to Ryan Reynolds and its been a long time coming. He was the ONLY thing (you heard me) that had any kind of worthwhile energy in Wolverine and his role in The Proposal showed he has classic movie star written all over him. Let Green Lantern be the one.

Star Trek did the lovely Zoe Saldana no harm whatsoever, I'm sure, but, middling as it is, 2005's Guess Who? is still the best showcase for her charms - and was a decent-sized hit. Avatar will cement her cred amongst geeks, but the fact she's a towering blue CGI-slathered alien won't make her more visible. I say 2009 ends with Zoe moving closer into Rosario Dawson, hot-gal-with-a-geek-friendly-resume territory.

Really? I mean I'm going to find out this weekend, but after his roles in Cabin Fever and Grindhouse... really?
The Hangover seems to have bumped the already ubiquitous Ken Jeong up to the next level of visibility (except his knob, which was hard to make out). He's been out in force promoting The Goods and has also been conspicuously crowbarred onto the poster for All About Steve, the guaranteed-shitty Sandra Bullock / Bradley Cooper rom-com.

Really. As Tarantino told him (after you've seen the film, give the AICN interview with Roth a read), he holds his own on screen with Pitt, Kruger and Waltz and that's pretty cool. He's also damn cool and funny.

Sharlto Copley? Granted I dont believe hell be rocketed up to the A-List, but if the man decides to continue acting (which apparently was nowhere close to his intention originally) then Im sure hell have a nice career.
Jeremy Renner. Or, at least to the level where he could get a leading role in a significantly budgeted film.
The only person in this thread whom I would stake my life on right now is Blomkamp. No way he's not getting some seriously big-budget offers right now.

Chris Pine, Bradley Cooper and Sam Worthington are pretty certain too, though it feels like Worthington at least hasn't quite been given the vehicle that'll drive him to stardom yet.
I'm surprised Marion Cotillard hasn't gotten a mention yet. Especially with her nabbing a role in Nolan's Inception and being rumored for Catwoman at some point.

Eli Roth definitely has a decent chance at launching an acting career if he so chose, but I honestly think of this as something fun to do with Quentin more than anything else.

I'd say B.J Novak has a decent shot after Basterds, and so does Shosanna Dreyfus. Although I still don't understand why the underrated Michael Fassbender of 300 and Hunger keeps eluding a full-on break out role.

As for comebacks, I'd throw in Stephen Dorff, Diane Kruger and Mike Myers.

I'd also say that with G.I Joe and Public Enemies that Tatum's had a fairly decent year.

On a side note, I think Bale's major setback to stardom is that he's so adamantly shy of the spotlight, and that he won't shake things up and take a completely out of left field, against type role. However, if you think Bale's name isn't coming up along with the Crowes and Jackmans at Hollywood executive casting related meetings I'd say that you are in the wrong good sir.
Not sure if Diane Kruger counts as a comeback because she never quite made the a-list. I think her career (after Quentin's) will benefit most from Basterds for a number of reasons: She's a revelation, in that she's much more compelling than she's been onscreen before, she looks great, and she's already recognisable to the American public. MAN she's great in Basterds. Everyone is, but she's the most surprising because I thought she was not a great actress based on National Treasure(s) and Troy.

Joseph Gordon Levitt's had a great year so far as well.

Katherine Bigalow, anyone?
Matt Schulze has one completely amazing scene in Extract, but that movie probably won't be a hit. But the guy is fucking terrifying and hilarious, and deserves more comedy roles at least. Love to see him show up in Hangover 2 or something.

If Channing Tatum becomes a star I will eat one of the critters from the Spider-Cricket thread.

No kidding. He makes me long for the versatility of Paul Walker.

Maybe as the cheaper second or third tier option to a Crowe or a Jackman - but not on the same footing no. In fact I'd still put Crowe above Jackman and Bale beneath both of them if I had to guess Hollywood star power.

...but then Bale isn't a star - as the massive billboards for Public Enemies around my town and on the sides of trams and buses proved this year...

I'm surprised he hasn't been mentioned more. He's in a pretty good position starring in two big movies in the summer, one with arthouse/indie cred (but at the same time a somewhat mainstream success), and a big fun summer action blockbuster (although he's not front and center in that one, he certainly gave one of its most enjoyable performances). He offers the best of both worlds performing on both ends of the spectrum in both the more 'mature' and more kiddie fare.

Tom Hardy and Joseph Gordon Levitt for sure after Inception.

Hardy, I believe, especially being cast in the next Bat film. I'm not saying Levitt doesn't deserve it, but his character wasn't the one people were talking about. I think it's going to be another role or big film that really breaks him out into the big time, national consciousness as a "star."
Jaden Smith, perhaps. We'll see what happens with his next couple of movies.

Also, I'd say that the character of Gru became a star.

I dunno... moments in which he steals a kiss from Ellen Page or fights in a rotating hallway make me think otherwise.
Andrew Garfield, for sure. Possibly Jennifer Lawrence if more people wise up and see WINTER'S BONE.
And Sullivan Stapeleton if more people saw Animal Kingdom!
Emma Stone just graduated from cult favorite.
Armie Hammer is on a few lists now, I'm guessing.

Jennifer Lawrence, for sure.

INCEPTION gave JGL the action-movie bump GI JOE didn't. (And, of course, Tom Hardy.)

And THE TOWN kicked things up a couple of notches for Ben Affleck, both as actor and filmmaker.

The cast of ANIMAL KINGDOM did all right: Joel Edgerton got the THING prequel, Ben Mendelsohn got the villain role in that TRESPASS movie opposite Cage and Kidman, Sullivan Stapleton got a pilot (that didn't go to series, but still).
Ask your average 20 year old who Tom Hardy is and you'll get blank stares. Ask them who JGL is and they'll start listing off 500 Days of Summer, Inception, 3rd Rock from the Sun, and more. He's a known quantity. 500 Days of Summer is a big fucking deal with people my age, as much as that might pain some of you, and it made Levitt a name with the college crowd. Then Inception cemented his spot as someone to watch.

I hear Levitt's name come up a lot when normal people talk about actors and movies. The only people that ever mention Tom Hardy are the film students, and even that's rare.
I fully agree. Levitt has achieved a level of cultural awareness that Tom Hardy can't touch. For now, much as I love Hardy, he's a film geek darling and little more. He's on par with Chiwetel Ejiofor.
Yeah as huge a fan as I am of the guy, it'll be after Nolans next Batman everyone will know Hardy.
I guess this could serve as an up and coming actors thread. Here's some things I've noticed.

1. Where's the next Eddie Murphy? Other than Craig Robinson (and Donald Glover I guess) I can't think of any black comedians associated with the "Apatow crew" that have taken off. Robinson hasn't even done as well as Rogen, Hill, or Rudd either.

2. A lot of Hollywood's future stars seem to be either British or Australian. Sam Worthington, Mia Wasikowska, Michael Fassbender, Carrey Mulligan, Andrew Garfield, Idris Elba, Tom Hardy, Chris Hemsworth, etc. Note that I'm not making any sort of statement with that. (This is our country gotdangit!)

3. Laugh now, but Robert Pattinson is the next DiCaprio/Pitt. Wait and see.
1. I don't think it's entirely correct looking for the next Eddie Murphy exclusively among black performers. Eddie Murphy wasn't exclusively a black thing. Adam Sandler was the next Eddie Murphy. You're going to want to look for the next Adam Sandler.

But Donald Glover is a writer, an actor and a comedian, and he's good to great at all three of these things, so he's going to have a very successful career. He's a little weird and a little too subtle, so who knows if it's going to be populist sensation like Eddie or Adam, but he's going big places.

EDIT: Oh, and I don't really have an opinion on 2 or 3.

I have no intention of seeing the new Tron, but I keep hearing/reading about Olivia Wilde (I noticed her name was even included in the later Next Three Days commercials).

Between Tron marketing (her hotness was prominently used) and Cowboys vs Aliens next year, she'll be big.
If the reviews are to be believed, I'll go for Hailey Steinfeld.

In television, Jack Huston seems to be getting a ton of mileage out of his exposure on Boardwalk Empire.
Does Jesse Eisenberg qualify?

Granted Zombieland was a hit, but I think many still thought of him as the guy you hire when Michael Cera isnt available.
I definitely believe that Eisenberg is going to get a major career bump.
The Social Network was huge for Eisenberg. Cera isn't even in the same league.
