Muse - Page 2

I missed the whole-album played on Friday, but the band's own site and the Triple J website are both allowing you to stream the whole album. Have to say that the Exogenesis Symphony in 3 parts is by far my favourite "song" from the album thus far. Can't wait to blast the whole thing through my car stereo next weekend. In the words of The Guardian newspaper "magnificently preposterous".

ETA: If you go to the Muse website (www.muse.mu) they have a list of sites that you can stream the whole album from across a lot of countries.

The whole thing sounds like what you'd get if Queen made an album with Vangelis. It didn't wow me on first listen. I'll keep listening to it and see if it grows on me.
It's very good. And yeah, Queen is definitively felt all over the place.
I like it but it doesn't come close to Absolution.

Listened to the The Resistance through once. Nothing really stood out, but I guess I liked it enough. Looking forward to hearing Megadeth's new album tonight.

The Resistance as an album feels like the first time the band has ever had fun when recording an album. It's gloriously tongue in cheek from the vague Blondie 'Call Me' call outs in the first song through Queen to the rendition of Claire De Lune and the goddamn Oboe solo. This is an album made with a sense of humour or Matt Bellamy is actually fucking insane.

Bought this for my wife as a present to listen to while she's at home looking after some little kids. So, I've only actualy heard a bit of it as the CD's at home and I'm at work.

First impression is it's ok. I prefer the more rock/guitar sound on Absolution over to the last two albums.
I agree. So far the album is not growing on me. I miss the arena rock. I do like Uprising though. It's missing a theremin.

Played it at full blast last night. Exogenesis Symphony preceded by I Belong to You is just so damn loopy I love it. Still not sold on the midsection of the album, but the title track is revolving around in my head nicely this morning. After replaying Exogenesis for a couple of times I was inspired to re-watch The Fountain (granted, that doesn't take too much persuasion to do) and made a nice interstellar evening of it.

Judging by this video I'm going to suggest that they're kind of taking the piss a little. It's difficult though because whilst the music is fun Bellamys increasingly paranoid/truther lyrics are getting harder and harder to swallow.
This album is crazy fun. Goddamn oboe solo.
I think the lyrics add to the fun. It's like everything the band does, cranked up to 11. But their sincerity keeps it from getting too ridiculous.
I'm still going to have to see if some songs grow on me, like Undisclosed Desires or I Belong To You.
Having played the whole thing end to end a couple of times now (and as planned - at full blast in my car on the way up to my parents' place last night) I now am semi-convinced by a theory that this album is actually "Muse: The Musical". What put this in my head was someone else's comment that "Resistance" the title track sounds awfully Andrew Lloyd Webber-ish. Now all that occurs to me is a freaking stage musical starting with our intrepid hero trying to raise the consciousness of the subdued masses (complete with on-off-on romance subplot) and ends with full on revolution, the aliens landing and then a colony of humans blasting off into space only for it all to go horribly wrong and them having to re-start civilisation all over again. Tell me you can't see that on stage, Rock Eisteddford-style!

That and that "I Belong to You" is actually a missing late Split Enz-early Crowded House song. With an oboe solo. Hilarious! Now one of my favourite tracks.

Having had a better listen, the album's grown on me quite a bit. They still don't rock out quite as well as they did previously in things like Stokholm Syndrome. However the mix of music styles is quite fun and catchy. I'm liking it more than Black Holes right now.

Yeah. I liked it at first, but now I'm loving it. And a change of direction is always better than stagnation.

I'm still trying to get my head around this album. At this point I'm liking the album but not quite in love. The problem? It feels like 3 separate albums. You have the Queen-vibe tracks, then you have the 80s synth-pop tracks and then finally the last three tracks (not 100% sure how I would classify these). Taken separately I love them all but as a whole, I'm not quite sold on them working together. On top of the fact that the "message" of the album seems a little wonky too. Bellamy goes from full-on revolt to maudlin introspection.

I must admit that my love for the new album is waning quite a bit. Individual songs on it are great ('Uprising' and 'Unnatural Selection' especially), but I'm honestly finding that I prefer BH&R as a full on, cohesive album.
I think that is what may be frustrating me the most. The last album was fantastic in it's cohesiveness. This one feels thrown together. Individually the tracks are spot-on though. I want to love this album.
I got rid of Undisclosed Desires and Guiding Light and now the album is unstoppable.
I've only just listened to it for the first time. Absolutely loved Uprising, like a hook filled dance version of the Dr Who them it burrowed into my brain. The rest is nowhere near as catchy. Judging from the interview in SPIN, they want to take over the American charts. This ain't the album to do that. They need an album of singles to do that.

Ugh. Bands who think like that turn me off in the worst way*. I'd hate to have to write this group off before I've ever even given them a proper chance.

But, my initial misgivings with them, coupled with some of the reactions in here, added to that comment may have just sealed the deal.

*Not that I'm against success. I like bands who can pack arenas too. But I don't want that to be their goal. And ESPECIALLY any real aspirations for "charts"... ugh. Don't get me wrong, EVERY band wants to be heard, and charts are definitely an indicator of that. But there's a subtle way to approach it and shoot for it that appeals to me. Link to this interiew?
The album hasn't grown on me, exactly, but individual tracks have. The first part of Exogenesis and I Belong To You have been going nonstop for me lately.

I'm embarrassed at how much they're repeating old tricks, tho. Definitely gotta shake up the formula after this record. Bellamy remembering that he plays guitar primarily live would also help.

Excerpt:

Which, explains Bellamy, is really, really big: "We'd like to be remembered amongst the best bands in the history of rock. It's necessary to have sustained success in this country for that to happen. But we've got a lot of work to do. We're perceived differently here."
Or, as Howard puts it, "We're the biggest band America doesn't know anything about."

I don't think competition is bad in music (and had They want to be considered amongst the giants of rock). Without the Beatles, there would be no Pet Sounds, it's just that if Muse want to be huge here, but this ain't the album to do that. Less Chopin might help in that regard.
If BH&R didn't do it, I don't think it's gonna happen.

I feel like such a fool for incorrectly identifying the segue in United States of Eurasia as Clair De Lune. It hit me what it was the next time I listened.

But yeah, there's no way this is going to be a breakthrough album. It's full of singles, but they've all got absolutely nutty middle sections. I don't think there's a song on the album, other than Uprising, which sounds like it could be a traditional single either due to its length or due to its sheer weirdness.

Although if I was them I'd release I Belong To You as a single in the run up to valentines day. It's like an autistic love ballad.

*post meant to follow Sam's post*

Truth. I would hazard a guess and say that most American's are aware of Muse. Most American's just don't care.
I sat through the entire VMA's just to see them perform Uprising.

I guess that makes me a pretty big fan.

This is hilarious.

Cheeky bastards.

In listening to the album more and more, I'm really digging Unnatural selection, what an asskicking groove. They go into full on metal towards the end, probably closest I've ever heard to classic Metallica.

The Album is growing on me, however my preditctions/suspitions were confirmed; Muse have gone even further with the direction which they started with Black Holes....
Guiding light is terrible even worse than Invincible? - I'm not sure) but I can enjoy the rest of the album.
It's down to my taste but I prefer Muse's angsty rock sound/tunes to this Pop (admitedly very creative stylish pop) rock sound.
Will be seeing them in Berlin next month - i just hope that they don't play Guiding light or invincible.....
Just saw them open for U2 at Giants Stadium last night. I'm only casually familiar with them--don't own any albums, but I know "Knights of Cydonia" and recognized two or three other songs they played--but I'll say this, they filled that ridiculous, ginormous stage about as well as is humanly possible for any non-U2 band. I'm not running out to collect their discography but they were definitely a good time live.

Muse haven’t really been angsty rock since Showbiz. Origin of Symmetry and Black Holes, whilst both having their weird moments, are essentially pop rock records. Absolution is a little harder but it’s still fairly poppy.

I saw them last night as the opening band for U2 and they are really damn good live. I'd never heard any of their music until last night and I was really impressed.

Then again... you paid money to see U2, so what does that say?

I kid, I kid.

I'm not sure how many folks in the stadium were familiar with them, although a few girls in my section were losing it during their set, but they had the whole place rocking. "Uprising" sent the place into a frenzy, and sent me to Youtube when I got home to look up the rest of their stuff. I've been converted.
