My friend leant me his copy of the "Not Just The Best Of The Larry Sanders Show" dvd set. This show is incredible. I've always loved Rip Torn, but this is him at his Rip Torniest. And Jefferey Tambor is amazing in this, playing a completely different character from George Bluth.
Another note about the DVD set: it has some of the best interviews I've ever seen. Gerry Shandling does these very low-key one of one sessions with various guest stars that are just amazing and perfectly tailored for each star's personality. Watching him walk through Central Park with Jerry Seinfeld, shooting the shit, debating what it means to be an actor, and even developing the beginnings of a stand-up bit is a comedy nerd's wet dream. And seeing him boxing Alec Baldwin, using their sparring as a metaphor for his appearance on the show is just as good.
But I think my favorite interview is the breakfast with Sharon Stone. You see her toying with him, asking things that clearly make him uncomfortable in front of the camera, letting the tension build, and then dropping them, letting him off the hook. It's fascinating to watch them poke and prod at each other as only old friends can (they both had the same acting coach, who was cited multiple times in the special features as being a huge influence on the show).
Definitely worth checking out.
