The Larry Sanders Show

My friend leant me his copy of the "Not Just The Best Of The Larry Sanders Show" dvd set. This show is incredible. I've always loved Rip Torn, but this is him at his Rip Torniest. And Jefferey Tambor is amazing in this, playing a completely different character from George Bluth.

Another note about the DVD set: it has some of the best interviews I've ever seen. Gerry Shandling does these very low-key one of one sessions with various guest stars that are just amazing and perfectly tailored for each star's personality. Watching him walk through Central Park with Jerry Seinfeld, shooting the shit, debating what it means to be an actor, and even developing the beginnings of a stand-up bit is a comedy nerd's wet dream. And seeing him boxing Alec Baldwin, using their sparring as a metaphor for his appearance on the show is just as good.

But I think my favorite interview is the breakfast with Sharon Stone. You see her toying with him, asking things that clearly make him uncomfortable in front of the camera, letting the tension build, and then dropping them, letting him off the hook. It's fascinating to watch them poke and prod at each other as only old friends can (they both had the same acting coach, who was cited multiple times in the special features as being a huge influence on the show).

Definitely worth checking out.

Hey now!

One of my favorite television shows of all time. This might have to go to the marathon list because it's been a while.

It's a real shame how maligned the dvd releases have been for this show.

Rip Torn has spent the rest of his career playing Artie.

Looking back at this show, there was much greatness and many funny character actors came from here. One of the main ones I am thinking is Jeremy Piven. His Jerry was a sad, bitter, yet comic gold man.

The best comedy in TV history. I would buy the whole series on DVD instantly if I could, and then proceed to make fans of all my friends. But no one appears to want my money.

EXCHANGE MY USELESS PAPER FOR FUNNY PLEASE!

That the entire series isn't on DVD is criminal. I love my season one discs, despite the fact that the transfer is complete ass.

The interview sections disturbed and depressed me. I'd like to think Shandling, who has accomplished as much as he has, would be happy in his life, but the level of pathos on display was overwhelming. The set is a must have.

Just a heads up. Alot of the Larry Sanders eps are on www.crackle.com for free. I think it's the complete first two seasons and then the best of seasons 3-6. Revisiting this show has been a revelation. For one thing, the show was more stand alone than I remember. For some reason I thought Larry Sanders was more serialized but it turns out it wasn't. Larry's prescription pill addiction was the closest to an arc that the show had but it was played very subtly throughout season 3.

I'm hard pressed to pick a favorite but "Hank's Night in the Sun" is one of my personal favorites. That's the episode where Hank gets to guest host the show and it's a great showcase for Jeffery Tambor as he gets to act like a nervous wreck and a titanic asshole in the same episode. Easily top 5 material for me.

Edit: Here's the link to the episode. One of the funniest edits near the end......

This is what I get for not having cable in high school. Fucking genius show. I can't believe I've missed out on it for so long.

Also, Judd Apatow was one of the writers on the show and I think became show runner late in its run. Check out episode 317 for some funny.

"We should really stay on top of that calling fans thing...."

Can't say enough of how much I love this show. For about a year I had HBO Comedy and got watch the run of this show. I've always wanted the whole thing on disc to watch on my time. It, like Arrested Development, used all it's supporting characters perfectly. Plus it has easily one of the top 10 series finales in TV history. Goes out perfect.

Are you talking about the episode with the gay character suing for sexual harrassment? Or was there one after that?

Yeah there were one or two after that. The very last being about Larry's Carson-lite last show.

It's disconcerting that this sentence exists. Hank Kingsley should be Tambor's legacy. Penis vagina penis vagina penis vagina.

He made the character live and breath. He's the stone that fellow awkward assholes like David Brent are carved from. Before The Office, you had "Hey Now" Hank Kingsley to wince at when his ego collided with the disagreeing reality.

Watched the "Hank's Sex Tape" episode this morning on the Not Just the Best of set. Favreau had a bit part in that as a writer. His only appearance on the show.

"Is it my imagination or is Hank really hung"?
"Well the camera adds 10 pounds"

Just about any Hank-centric episode is fried gold. The ending is pretty funny too.

That's true, but I saw Arrested Development first.

The fact Tambor never won an Emmy playing Hank is ridiculous, but demonstrates why I've lost interest in all these awards shows.

Best news I've heard in a long time: The Complete Larry Sanders Show FINALLY coming to DVD, hopefully in September!!! Article Here.

Niiiiiice!

I wonder how they're handling the music issues that kept this from being released previously. Honestly, they could replace all the songs with Shandling playing a banjo as long as I can finally show friends the glory of Artie's drunken tour of the studio with russian janitor Nikolai, and Henry Winkler marveling at Hank's giant penis.
