The Mars Volta - Octahedron

Same old shit. But I'm not disappointed.

I wish Rick Rubin would produce another album with Flea on bass.

There's a new Mars Volta album? Fuck, I hate being out of the musical loop.

I'm really loving this album.

I think "Teflon" is one of the best tracks they've written in years.

They mix things around, sure. I wouldn't have started a thread if I wasn't a huge fan. 'Since We've Been Wrong' strikes me as 'The Widow' revisited long-form.

No one album sounds like another? Are you fucking high? They all have a similarity. Cedric and Omar. They've built it around themselves, and it shows. Just saying, same old/new TMV. It's not bad. It's great, but it's not all that DIFFERENT.

For all the hate and ridicule they get, it's a live band that I never get tired of. My love for the albums vary (I thought Frances & Amputechture were bit of a bore, but De-loused and Bedlam fucking rock), but they're one of the few who consistently and stubbornly work at maintaining the bar level they've set for themselves. Plus, wildly misunderstood. I had a lengthy interview with OR Lopez last year, and he told me that a lot of the prog mumbo jumbo in lyrics and artwork were in-jokes the band got off on. They're self-aware of what they're doing, but not to the point where it becomes blasé. Cedric never fails to drop do some respectful name-dropping whenever he gets interviewed.
So I'm buying this, and will definitely catch a show this summer.

Their live show is fantastic and great value for money, though the sound is so immense that I suspect they wouldn't sound much different if the band was half the size. That first album is one of the best rock albums this decade I think, but they're a band where them being restrained and mainstreamed a bit is really in their best interests. They seemed to lose interest in melody after that one and quality control pretty much went out the window. Bedlam was a step in the right direction but every one of their last three albums would benefit from losing a good half hour of filler.

Whoever finally managed to get this band the Ritalin they so desperately needed: THANK YOU.

Easily the best album they've done since De-Loused. Copernicus is possibly the best song they've written altogether.

Of course they sound like the same band, but each album is aiming for a different kind of style than the other. This one seems to be their "pop album", according to Cedric.

It's definitely less chaotic and more reigned in, I'm a fan of Frances and Amputechre, well, certain songs anyway, I'll admit alot of it was just wankery. I liked Octahedron for the most part, but I'll need to keep listening to it to see if it grows on me like Amputechre did.

Copernicus?

You like that song vs. anything they've done post-De-loused? Wow.

I respect your opinion, but I have to vehemently reject the idea.

On first listen I love it. Kinda weird, since the last two albums took a while to sink in. Frances was immediate love too, though.

I don't know what it is, this one just really clicks with me. It seems like the first time Omar and Cedric have relaxed...ever.

It's my least favorite Volta album. It's a nice change of pace but it has no great songs on it. What a horrible start to the album too, with basically a minute and a half of nothing.

"Let the wheels burn, let the wheels burn, stack the tires to the neck with the body inside!"

Loving all of this album.

It's hard to not like an album with the lyric "I've summoned a stampede of infidel feet" in it.

The lyrics are great, the mood is dreamy without being lazy or even minimalistic, and the mid-song shift into something I daresay Bjorkish I absolutely adore.

Time may very well prove me wrong, but the last song from this band I fell in love with this quickly was Eriatarka, and nothing has dampened my love for that track over the years. I'm standing by my previous statement.

I've only heard the songs online but this seems like a nice album. Probably their most melodic and listenable album since the first. Still, I can't help thinking an album made up of the best mellow tracks off the new one and the best frantic rockers from the last one could've made for a better album than both.
