Wasn't Sean Lennon in Cibo Matto, though?
I think Lennon was only on their second (and final) album as he was dating one of the ladies.

Cibo Matto's first album, VIVA LA WOMAN, is a kind of demented masterpiece.

while Lush was a female fronted band, I think when the lead singer quit to form Sing-Sing, that would definately qualify as a girl group.

Emma Anderson left to form Sing Sing (loved her stuff). Lush was done after their drummer, Chris Ackland, committed suicide. Last I knew, Miki Berenyi (lead singer, girl o' my dreams) was working for the BBC, got married, had a kid, etc.

Fuck, I loved that band. Saw them many years ago at the Fastlane in Asbury Park, with Weezer as the opener. Great times!

That's awesome on many levels.

Not as awesome as the hippie with silver boots who was doing an interpretive dance while the show was going on. He... was.... FABULOUS!!!!!

Another perk:

I was sitting on the bleachers near the soundboard, and got to see Miki Berenyi herself hanging out there during Weezer's set, singing and dancing along during "Buddy Holly" and "Say It Ain't So".

I'll take that hit, I like 'em. A ton. Can't help it.

I know some of those and I agree.

Ditto on the Donnas, Kittie, Garbage (yeah, yeah).

Maybe not all technically girl groups (but girl led), I also enjoy the Horrorpops, Letters to Cleo, Anna Waronker (that dog), Lullacry, Dresden Dolls, Distillers, Rasputina, Sirena, Leave's Eyes, Lunachicks, Betty Blowtorch, Medieval Baebes, Catherine Whalen's Jazz Squad, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Blondie, etc.

My wife's into Evanescence and Flyleaf. I have listened on occasion.

Discovered Barbe-Q-Barbies on Myspace. Don't know much about them, but I like what I hear (and they're hawt).

tATu anyone? LOL

EDIT: I'm suddenly reminded of this old thread: The International Olympics of Slutty Popstars

I'll run that ball into the end zone: a few moments of unapologetic cheese aside, the first two albums have aged amazingly well.

Waitaminnit. You want me beaten for Lacuna Coil and Drain STH, but the Spice Girls are ok???
For the kind of music they make, the Spice Girls were fine, and moreover they were at least self-aware enough to have fun with their music. More than makes up for a lot of the vocal shortcomings.

Lacuna Coil and Drain STH on the other hand, not only take themselves way too seriously, but between them know two chords. This does not a band make.

At least Evanescence know their one ace is Amy Lee's voice and take full advantage of it.

My previous statement stands. The beatings will arrive soon enough.

DM, if you like Betty Blowtorch, have you checked out Go Betty Go? You might find them worth a listen.

Totally agree, in fact a couple of their songs made it onto a driving cd I made recently.

Nope. But I'll try and track them down. To be honest, my exposure to Betty Blowtorch is due solely to a mercilessly-scratched cd my friend gave me that was out of the case and that was kicked around on the floor of his car.

Has anyone brought up Pat Benatar yet? She had a killer, opera trained voice and produced many classic songs in the late 70s/early 80s. Granted, it isn't a 'girl' band (her husband, Neil Giraldo, has always been her guitarist), but she's the only FACE for the music.

My love of the Benatar knows no bounds. I'm seeing her on a double bill with Blondie in August.

I just missed her at the House of Blues down here in Orlando. Would have taken my wife, but we were on fam vacation in Michigan.

Don't forget Heart, either. Once again, they're not necessarily a 'girl' group, but come on - the only members that really matter are the Wilson sisters.

By the way, I saw them about a month and a half ago here in MN. They still kick all sorts of ass, and Ann hasn't lost a note of her killer range.

Neither are most of the acts mentioned for about half a page, strictly speaking.

Never the hugest fan of Heart, but I happened to be at that rock museum in Seattle one afternoon when they were sound-checking for a benefit later that night, and got to meet Ann and Nancy, and they were both terrifically nice.
