The past few weeks have really been kicking my ass in terms of work, college, girlfriend, and my band, so my "horror time" has been pretty much non-existent. Luckily, finals are over, work is easing up, my band is back on good terms, and my girlfriend and I are finally getting to spend more time together. Since I have all this free time, I've been trying to catch up on horror in general. Here's the rundown so far:
George Romero's "Bruiser": Went into this one not knowing what to expect. I love Romero like a god, but to be honest, I was pretty skeptical about this one. Luckily, I was pretty impressed. It's a damn solid film. Jason "Good God, it's BILLY!" Flemying was great, as was the always enjoyable (if not a bit over the top) Peter Stormare. There were flaws to the film, most notably the cops (Dames? What the hell is that?), but overall, I found it to be enjoyable. 7.5/10.
"Ginger Snaps": I'll go ahead and say it: I fucking loved it. The thing that sold me on this one was the acting. REALLY impressive. Ginger was great, as was Bridget. The scene with the fully transformed Ginger "sharing" a meal with Bridget was creepy as hell, as was the ending. The film world has been putting out shit werewolf flicks for quite some time now, but this one has restored my faith. 8.5/10.
"Ghosts of Mars": Obviously I went into this one expecting a steaming pile of ass, but what I got was something INFINITLY worse. I cannot begin to tell you how absolutely, unbelievably shocked I was at how mind-numbingly awful this film was. I cannot think of a SINGLE redeeming aspect of it. John Carpenter FAILED with this film. I thought perhaps the fim would suck, but be a nice little way to kill two hours and hold my attention. It did not. I wanted to weep like a child after I saw it. Seriously. Let's face it, the man's been on a slow downward spiral for quite some time (I like "Vampires" just fine, and I loved "In The Mouth of Madness", but let's face it, they dont hold a candle to his 80's work), but for Christ sakes, "GOM" was just ridiculous. 1.0/10 (and that's being kind).
That's all the horror movies I've got around to so far (We watched "Chopper" tonight though, which was really good). I do have one other mini-review to throw in for the new Misfits album "Cuts From The Crypt". First off, it's not terrible. If you hate Michael Graves, don't even bother, if you dig him, it's worth your time. I really enjoyed "American Psycho", and after listening to it ALOT lately, "Famous Monsters" has really grown on me, so "Cuts From The Crypt" turned out to be pretty damn good. It doesn't come close to the days of yore with good 'ol Glenn, but there's definitly something there. I'd try to preview it before buying it, but at least give it a shot, it's a fun album.
That's it so far. I'm starting to get my bloodlust back from my steady diet of horror flicks (both good and bad), Slayer, Misfits, and Samhain albums, Silent Hill 2, Devil May Cry, and a lot of sleeping during the daylight hours, so needless to say, horror is once again, a part of my life. And it feels great.
