Games you've used to convert others to videogaming

Thread Starter
Horrible title for the thread, I know...still, here's what inspired it; my best story on this matter:

My older brother (31 years old, 4 years older than me) is a casual gamer at best; he used to play a lot on the days of arcades and the NES, and lately only played the occasional strategy PC game or soccer games with his buddies.
A few weeks ago, he asked me to create him a profile in my Xbox 360 and let him play "Chronicles of Riddick" (the guy has never seen either Riddick film, but is familiar with them) because he was bored (and probably wanted to make fun of me for buying a Vin Diesel game, I suppose).
He finished "Butcher Bay" in 2 fucking weeks, playing every night after work, and then he was joyful when I revealed to him that there was a second campaign (Dark Athena), which he is now on the verge of finishing.
Two days ago, he walks into my room with a game magazine under his arm and proceeds to threaten me, just like when we were kids, that Id better fucking get "Batman: Arkham Asylum" the day its released.

I cant help decide if i should feel scared or glad about this so far, so i need to know how other chewers have turned non gamers into it.

Speaking of brothers, my little brother never really had much interest in gaming until he would sit and watch my friends and I play Rainbow Six 3 for hours and hours over XBL. Since then he's claimed the expert gamer title in the family.

I introduced my younger cousins, who were 4 and 6 at the time to both...Godzilla games on my original X Box, then we played...Gauntlet on Midway Arcade Classic Collection 1, and finished with TMNT and Marvel Ultimate Alliance. They are now both big X-Men, TMNT and Godzilla fans.

hmm I'm not sure if this counts but here goes

My parents bought me an NES for christmas back when i was 5 (around 88)
I was hooked, but little did i know that my parents were playing the thing till like 3 - 4 in the morning without me knowing. Now me and my dad will get a round of street fighter in from time to time

My parents were the same, only it started with a Phillips Videopac. What used to anoy me as a kid was they always bought themselves the next gen console before they bought me it.

I used 'Diablo 2' to get several friends and coworkers into video gaming. That game became like pure crack to all of them.

As pretty much anyone who is my age and has been uni will know, the 'Pro Evolution Soccer' series created many a beautiful friendship.

In our halls in first year we had about 20 people in a league with people playing each other every night, it was beautiful. We all put a few quid together for prizes for the winners and had a league table on a big white board.

Quite a few people had never really played video games but they soon joined in and loved it. I'm still good mates with a couple of the people I met through those games.

My dad went down in his back shortly after I got the first Zelda, gold cartridge and all, and I told him he could play to pass the time. Little did I know it would be two weeks before I played Zelda again. Dad's played a total of three games ever, the first being Zelda and the subsequent games being SNES Zelda and Wind Waker. Apparently my old man digs himself some Link.

My kickass girl already gamed a bit before we met (mostly old school NES) but I got her turned on to Guitar Hero first. Then Portal. She beat Portal before I did and ever since then she's been a gamer. Her current favorite series is Tomb Raider and she beats all of those as soon as they come out. She even digs L4D and other FPS's if co-op is an option.

Back in the olden thymes on the Atari 2600, my dad disliked Combat, Space Invaders, etc., until Megamania and the crappy Pac Man showed up on the console.

I think he (with my brother) worn out that system more than I ever did afterwards.

Oddly enough, he hasn't played a game since.

One thing I've noticed--and this thread bears out--is that when a casual or non-gamer gets into a game, they binge on it, 100%-ing it and basically getting about $500 worth of playing time out of a $60 game.

I used to think that I don't play games as obsessively as I did when I was little because I don't have the time any more, but I think the "high" just wears out over the years.

Total truth right there Floyd.

Right on, Floyd. I know that the people that I got hooked on 'Diablo 2' went without food or sleep for a couple of months.

Same thing with my dad and PITFALL II. He'd stay up in my room all hours until he beat it, but I don't think he's played a game since then (though he did like to watch over my shoulder as I played MONKEY ISLAND 2).

My buddy and I bought Tiger Woods 10 recently on the same day. I played it for a few hours for a day or two, then we played a game online. He didn't seem too happy that my character had more upgrades than his, so his spent every waking hour for the next three days trying to max out his character and calling me every time he made progress. I have had a lot of stuff going on so I haven't played it too much.

I only had about an hour to play yesterday and he called me right when I started playing. I told him I only had an hour to play, but he was so excited about the game that we talked for the whole hour. Pretty funny cause he has never been into games as much as me. Although I didn't get to play at all , it was still cool cause he was like "I finally understand what you get out of playing games, I'm totally addicted!!!".

I've been successful converting quite a few friends using Tony Hawk Pro Skater.

The WII has already converted everyone into gamers.

I converted myself with COD4. I was never a big FPS type gamer. Now that's mostly what I seem to get a kick out of. I was big into fighting games like Tekken. Lately I don't even notice that Tekken 6 is coming out soon, I'd rather save the cash for Modern Warfare 2.
