Luis Bunuel

There's a big, gaping Surrealist hole in my film collection that I'm attempting to remedy. I just finished watching THE PHANTOM OF LIBERTY, my first full-length Bunuel (I had seen UN CHIEN ANDALOU, but that is all), and it left me befuddled-yet-exhilarated. Just like UN CHIEN ANDALOU.

To any Bunuel fans, I am considering seeing THE DISCREET CHARM OF THE BOURGEOISIE next ... Recommendations are welcome.

Discreet Charm, Simon of the Desert, Exterminating Angel, Viridiana. Las Hurdes/Land Without Bread if you want to see a goat die under questionable circumstances.

How about La Strada? Is that worth a look?

The Young One is a personal favorite. Set in the dirty South, racial tensions, creepy child bride action.

Thanks for the recommendations. I've added Viridiana, Discreet Charm, and The Young One to my Netflix queue. I also looked for Los Olvidados, but it doesn't appear to be available.

Orpheus! Not Bunuel, but better.

All good recommendations. Belle de Jour and Tristana easily deserve mention here as well.

I'd like to second the Exterminating Angel recommendation. It wasn't quite the girls with guns extravaganza I was hoping for, but I enjoyed it all the same. That Obscure Object Of Desire is worth seeking out too. It may not be quite up to the standards of his earlier work, but it's a fitting final effort.
