NCAA Football '10

So, anyone? I'm doing my annual tradition of picking up this game, playing it furiously for about 3 months, then letting it gather dust until this time next year. Actually last year I got into playing online, but people either would drop out when they were getting beat, or in the league I played in, people just stopped playing about 1/2 way through the season.

I'm picking it up after work. The return of the Create-a-School function was a big selling point for me, although I didn't care too much for the online tool they put up for it.

Plus, I seem to have more fun with the NCAA game than with Madden. Can't put my finger on it, it just feels more exciting to me.

Is the create a school on the actual game or only online? I read a review that said only online.

Sadly, as a Wii owner, I won't be getting NCAA this year. Just as well, since last year's game was downright abortion-y.

I'm the same way. I think it's because there are so many different teams to choose from, and it's fun to take a traditionally crappy or Division II, I mean, FBS team and lead them to the championship. The recruiting in '09, while interesting and somewhat fun in the beginning, got to be a pain in the ass after a while. I'll be interested to see if they've pulled back on it a bit in this version.
I was so frustrated by last years version that halfway through an online game I ejected the disc and crumpled it up. So no, I wont be buying 2010.

Wow, the frustration factor just went x10 for me. I'm trying to play a season, and in the first game I lose a defensive struggle because I can't run the ball. The next two games (one vs. an FBS team and one vs. a ranked team), I'm still having trouble running the ball until the very end. Then the next game, I can't do anything vs. an unranked team. I mean nothing. I run a toss sweep, and the fucking defensive players are there before I can even take the handoff. I pass the ball, and it's gets batted down at the line 50% of the time. I reset the game twice and it kept doing it. I told the Gamestop guy I wouldn't be interested in trading this in for Madden '10, but if this keeps up, I may just do that. I thought I broke my controller at one point--I threw it like 6 feet across the room after my guy caught a swing pass with no one around him and 1 yard away from the 1st down marker, and then suddenly three guys zoomed in and tackled him short of the first down.

Martianman, what difficulty are you playing on?

I'm enjoying it, but all the microtransactions for cool toys -- like getting a 5-star recruit for the Road to Glory mode or getting the Recruit Advisor -- rub me a little the wrong way. I know you can earn 5-star status on your own by going through the high school playoffs, but if certain beneficial functions are going to be reserved for those who want to pony uip the Microsoft points, I'm not sure I dig that.

As for gameplay, they sure as hell ramped up the penalties. I had a drive on defense where it seemed like every other play I was getting called for a facemask, including one where I made a shoestring tackle. And I didn't have the game plan thing set to aggressive either. And the fluttering passes when you throw as you're being sacked seem to get picked off every single time. Either that, or I'm extraordinarily unlucky.

Oh, and apparently people are already using the online Teambuilder to put together juggernauts with 99 ratings for every player, so online dynasty has the potential to turn into a bit of a joke.

I think on the 2nd level--not Freshman, but the next level. Whatever the default was. My "star" RB can't outrun anyone. Actually, none of my RBs or WRs that are a 95 SPD or higher can outrun anyone. Is there no "sprint" button anymore? I know I'm losing out by not trying to stiff arm or spin move anyone--I need to work on that. But considering I have my guys set to "hold block longer" and no one on my OL is under a 93 in ability, you'd think I could run the ball, especially up the middle, a helluva lot better. Other players just seem to shed every block my guys attempt, yet I can't get off any block when I'm on defense.

Oh, and in one game, the CPU got on my 1 yard line, and couldn't run it in two times in a row. The next play, he takes the snap, then immediately throws up the ball. Incomplete. 4th down, he does the same thing, and lo and behold, his WR outjumps my 3 DBs and catches the lob pass. Fuck you, EA.
Sprint is the right trigger button.

I'm playing on the same level as you (Varsity) and I'm not having the same difficulties. Sure, some teams play the run and the option better than others, and I'm not running at will, but I'm not getting stonewalled either.
Man, all the old annoyances are popping up in force now. My guys can't block on kick returns to save their lives, while the CPU of course has perfect blocking every time. Having a defender look at you seems to be enough for the QB to pull the ball in, even if he has time to throw or pitch -- I had a halfback wide open on an option run, and watching the replay, the QB actually started the pitch motion when I pulled the trigger, only to pull it in, tuck it, and take the hit. And the patented comeback mode is back in full force. Teams going for it on 4th and 12 from their side of the 50 midway through the third quarter and down by 6? Sure. Three onside kick recoveries in a row -- all of which bounce off the same hands guy every single time? Got it. A QB who couldn't hit a barn all game threading the ball through dime coverage? Yep. Oh yeah, and I'd much rather look at a graphic about how many yards someone has than make defensive adjustments before the snap, thanks for that.
Generally feeling the same way about this, particularly the heroic comeback stuff. Seems like the second half of every game the AI defense blitzes constantly, which, due to the way the game is constructed, means it's virtually impossible to even try to pass the ball effectively most of the time. And, of course, even though my defense might have held pretty well in the first half, it completely collapses in the second. It basically seems that if I'm not up by at least four touchdowns at halftime it's going to be a close game.

And those graphics are killing me. I keep making bad audibles because of them.

Yeah, I hate to say it, but I think I am going to take this back and get the big trade-in value for Madden '10. I played again last night vs. USF. I knocked their QB out of the game, and on 4th and 12 from the 16, the backup QB, on his first play in the driving rain, snaps the ball, takes a 1-step drop, and throws a pass over the outstretched hands of 2 D-Linemen, and right between 2 LBs to the TE for the touchdown. My wife yelled at me when I threw the controller across the room.

I ended up winning the game on a fluke play--I caught him out of position when I ran a 4 WR set and he only had 2 CBs on me, so I got a 65-yard play on a literal 7 yard pass. I almost scored too fast, because he had just over 2 minutes to come back and win. Another nagging thing I've noticed--when the game starts, I set my stuff to "By Formation". However, every time 4th down comes up and either it thinks I should go for it or the CPU is going for it, the game automatically reverts to the "Corso Recommends", whether I'm on offense or defense. And I'm still pissed that I'll have a guy uncovered in the flat, and as soon as he catches the ball, there are suddenly 2-3 defensive players that appear out of nowhere that I can't outrun.

The CPU returns kickoffs routinely for 25-30 yards...I can't get more than 10-15 yards. I played BYU and won 27-14, and BYU's 14 points came from two KO returns for TDs. His blockers can push anyone out of the way, but my guys can't hold a block more than 2 seconds, and about once a quarter, inevitably one DL for the CPU will blow up my guard and either make a tackle in the backfield or sack me. It's happened to me every game I've played.

It's funny that you can't effectively pass--that's the only thing I can do. I can't run with any consistency, unless I pass, pass, pass, and then I can only run either towards the end of the game, or out of the shotgun.

I'm not having any of the problems you guys are. I'm moving the ball fine, both on the ground and in the air. I'm having a little trouble on defense but I always do. I've got it set on Varsity too. It isn't as easy as 09 but it hasn't been frustratingly difficult, aside from when I was a RB in Road to Glory.

What team(s) are you using? And did you adjust the AI sliders at all? Sometimes when these things are really skewed different ways, you can adjust the sliders and it helps. I need to go online and try to find some slider settings to see if it helps at all.
Well, my dynasty is Ohio State but I've played some as Illinois, Penn State, Arizona St, Oklahoma. I struggled the most with the Illini but that was in Road to Glory mode and I was a RB. Not a good team to choose if you like running games but when I was on the field I could move the ball ok. I haven't touched the sliders. I will say that I've started using the right stick when running to juke and whatnot and that is something I never had to do in 09.
Playing Road to Glory mode, ending up signing with USC. Won the starting job and was 4-0 until we played Cal. Not my QB's fault, the defense didn't stop Cal the entire game. It's fun, but oh lord is it maddening to watch the AI control my backs and receivers. Ran an inside run, there was a huge hole and a blocker leading the way, and the HB stopped, cut left and tried to run the ball around the outside, right into the arms of two linebackers. The backs never seem to simply put their heads down and go forward, they're always trying to juke and spin. I also hit a receiver on a slant who, if he'd just turned upfield, would have walked into the end zone. Instead, he kept running in the direction of the slant after he caught the ball, right into a closing safety. It's frustrating to watch that happen and have no control over it.

Martianman, I'm using a Teambuilder team that I deliberately started off at 3 stars. Most of the problems I'm having aren't related to ability, just the way the game is coded.

I mean, I'm using FSU, which is ranked like an A for offense, and a B+ for defense. My defense is fantastic for the most part. I have a problem with RBs consistently gashing me up the middle. I started pinching the DL every play one game, and that finally stopped it, but it wasn't just with one team--every team could just run straight up the middle. And playing USF, their RB took the ball one time ran up the line, stopped, side stepped 3 defenders, cut back the left, then ran into the end zone. All while every one of my defenders were being "blocked" by the other USF players. Now I don't know--maybe their RB is that good. But it was a hell of a run whether or not it was the CPU.

I've also had the same problem WRs. I've had them set for square-ins or square-outs, and when I anticipate their break, they never turn. They just keep running straight. And I don't think I've completed a deep pass yet either. I can't get any WRs to run faster than a safety, apparently. And my slowest WR is a 90 speed.

Maybe I just need to finish my season and let my guys progress and see what happens. And I agree, I think it's the game itself, not the team ratings or ability.

I've had plenty of interceptions where a WR failed to make the cut his route called for.

And don't get me started on the RB on an option play who, right when I'm about to pitch the ball to him with nothing but daylight between him and the end zone, decides now is the time to cut behind me and try to block someone. Fumble, defense recovers.

I will tell you one play that works a lot, maybe because I don't run it a lot--a pass to the flat to the FB. I have a FB that is a good pass catcher, which helps, but I'd guess he's not even covered 90% of the time. I did PA in Goal Line formation on the 4 yard line one time and rolled right, and I had my choice of a wide-open TE or FB. There was a LB in between the two, but he was 2-3 steps behind both. I run a little sparse option, and one time I was completely engulfed by two defenders, and I still hit the pitch button anyway. The ball came out like it was punched, and my RB caught it and ran for 15 yards. Of course, I've also pitched it and gotten negative yards, whereas I should have just held the ball.
I've pitched it and had it tipped and recovered by the defense. Before this version, either you pitched or you didn't. It's a nice wrinkle.
Almost any pass I throw to the fullback results in a first down. I don't know if it is something about the game design but no one ever covers the FB. I have been having trouble with bad routes from the WR's though. Sometimes, I swear, they just wander around.

Yep, well, I'm done. Fuck this game. I returned it to Gamestop today and picked up Madden '10 for $18. Here's what led to the final straw for me:

I'm playing Ga. Tech as FSU. They return the opening KO for a TD. Then I score. I KO out of bounds. On the 2nd play from scrimmage, the QB throws an awful lob pass to the FB. He breaks SIX tackles on route to a 60 yard TD. I score again. He takes the KO and returns it for a TD for the 2nd time. I kick a FG, then kick the ball OOB. On the first play from scrimmage, he runs into the pile up the middle, darts and scoots, and breaks free for a 67-yard TD. Halftime. I check the main RB's stats--he's broken SEVENTEEN tackles at the half. 2nd half starts--I get the ball, fumble it, then he throws an INT I return for a TD. We're tied. He gets the ball, and I can't do anything to stop him. He gets inside my 10 yard line. Runs a sweep, and as my LB is closing in on him at the sidelines (CPU-controlled, not by me, as I was chasing him with a DE), suddenly the LB that's going to cut him off does a 180 and runs the opposite direction. RB scores, I throw the controller, and announce that this game can eat my asshole.

I'll go back later and buy NCAA '09 and play it again.
Yeah, I took this back and put it towards Champions Online. Too many unstoppable CPU drives, too many nonsensical moves by CPU players.
I think Madden 10 might be worse. It's just -boring-. There's a decent football game (with all the goofy issues like running out of bounds for no reason that Madden has had for 10+ years now), but everything else is just cold and sterile.

It's like EA Sports has forgotten that being a superstar athlete or running a sports franchise should be FUN. I've been renting all of their sports games, and so far they've all been going back within a couple days. At least NCAA has the Option, taking Northern Illinois to the title, and Lee Corso to amuse me!

It's almost like they're trying to make it TOO realistic, which is the last thing I want from a VIDEO GAME.

Yeah, my thoughts exactly. This is especially bad since EA has always failed pretty hard at the details required for a realistic game to be fun (players keep doing things only a dumb AI would do, management options are always really limited and painful to navigate, etc).

I mean, they had time to incorporate 1001 different reminders that you can buy DLC cheats and features that should have been included, but never tell you in-game what stats do, or give you any feedback on your performance.

But the missing 'fun' is my main complaint. My favorite sports games of recent years are the last Blitz (goofy, but fun to play and gives you a great sense of progression & feedback on your performance) and MLB Power Pros (which looks like a cartoon but has the best stat engine under the hood of any recent sports game - it also has a spectacular RPG 'legacy' mode that is totally addictive). By contrast, every EA Sports game has a 'legacy' mode now, but none of them make any effort to make you feel like a star (or like anything, really). You get an occassional email or other text one-liner, often not even related to anything you did. For example, Madden has cutscenes of people tailgating, but nothing related to your Superstar or Franchise.

Dulllllll.

This drives me absolutely batshit in Madden (but I guess I deserve it for, you know, buying Madden). If the game is close at all I literally have to design my drives around getting that clock down to nothing so that SUDDENLY UNSTOPPABLE OPPONENTtm doesn't rear its ugly head and manufacture Hall-of-Fame completion after completion to win the game.
I've taken knees on first and goal from the one just to run the clock down enough so I can score with no time left.
