Dragon*Con 2009

Just heard that Terry Gilliam will be there this year. So will Patrick Stewart.

The news of me being there has gone mostly unnoticed for some reason.

I don't plan on going this year, but the guest list makes that a tough decision. The skeptics track has some great guests this year and the addition of Gilliam is fantastic. I'd love to hear his stories and I assume they'll screen Imaginarium at some point during the convention. But the event has become so crowded and chaotic that it really isn't much fun for me. I don't much care for waiting in line for two or three hours so that I can cram into a room to see a single panel per day (or worse, wait in line only to find out the room has reached its capacity before I could go in). And to pay for the set of frustrations that go along with the convention is just too much for me. Maybe if I were performing there this year I'd have a different attitude -- I'll put up with a lot if I'm getting in for free. But I think I'm taking this year off from performing.

I know that DragonCon is small compared to SDCC but I've never been to that event. Does it run more smoothly than DragonCon, or is the experience pretty much the same (but with three times as many attendees)?

SDCC is a unique convention experience. I've been to them all and there's really nothing to compare it to, although if you want to distill it down to its basic elements it's a nerdy convention like all the rest, but it's just different. I don't know, I guess you need to go to see what I mean.

I ended up not going to hardly any panels last year. I just walked around and talked to folks a lot, then went to the on-going film rooms and would hang out there for a while. Then we'd go to one of the parties (the Mad Scientist thing was really cool with the giant Tesla coils) and stay up half the night partying. By the end of the day Sunday, I realized I hadn't gone to much of anything, but I still had a blast. And my wife accidentally made friends with Nathan Fillion's brother, which was kinda funny considering she loves Fillion. We saw him like 4-5 times during the Con, and he was always doing anything but going to the panels his brother was in.

One word for you: Shatner.

That is all.

Yep, this week. Expecting the line for Shatner/Nimoy's panel Friday morning at 10 AM to start lining up at, oh, 10 PM Thursday night.

I still haven't been to one of these. If I was still employed, I would have considered going.

Ironically, I probably will only be employed for another month after this is over. Getting laid off for the 2nd time in a year. Woo hoo! Go American economy!

Do you know if Shatner going to be there on Saturday? The site says he is, but the I didn't see any mention of him on Saturday in the program guide.

I didn't either. All I saw was Friday at 10 AM, then another session with Nimoy that afternoon. I'm checking into the Marriott (which I think is where the first session is) on Thursday, so I'm going to be up early to try and make the 10 AM session. I wouldn't be surprised if he was only there Friday. If you want, I'll ask when I register on Thursday and PM you and let you know.

Interestingly, the price for an arranged pic with Shatner was $200, and for both he and Nimoy was $400. Now it's down to $80 and $160, respectively. And Shatner is only listed for Friday. Nimoy is for Fri. and Sat.

That would be great, thanks.

A friend just posted this on FB:

" for you going to Dragon Con: From the TrekTrak email "booster club" just now: The William Shatner & Leonard Nimoy panel scheduled for 10:00 Friday morning HAS BEEN MOVED from the Marriott Atrium Ballroom to the Hyatt Regency Centennial I-III. Pass it on!"

Yeah, they're moving it to a bigger location. I believe I saw that change in the pocket program that just came out.
