DVR Alerts!

Could be helpful to have a central place to alert Chewers to worthwhile movies airing on various outlets. Then we can watch movies and talk about movies after we see the movies. So, anything rare, out of print, or cool about to come on the TEEvee, post it here!

I seem to be the only poster with this channel, but I can't spread enough love for MGMHD. They run a lot of fun, underseen films in HD. I sit watching, watching and waiting, for the day they run Rolling Thunder. I know in my heart it's coming. But for now (this week at least), we're getting neat stuff like Support Your Local Gunfighter, Gorp, Eye Of The Needle, Black Robe, The Long Riders, and The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes, all in hi def. I think the channel costs me five bucks a month.

Kickass.

I like the idea of this kind of thread. I think Beaks or Devin did something similar when TCM was going to air Skidoo.
Couple nights ago some station, think it was Encore Action, ran THE SAVAGE SEVEN. The biker flick that inspired Tarantino to give Larry Bishop $80 to make HELL RIDE.

Haven't watched it yet. Guess it doesn't do much good in this thread since it already aired, but if I see it pop up again in the listings I'll make mention here.

This one's fantastic. I urge folks to watch it just to see how a low budget can often make a film blow past most big budget studio efforts about the same topic.

The way they made this film puts it, for my money, right in league with the criminally underseen IT HAPPENED HERE.

Turner is the bomb and frankly, I didn't even realize we had it on our system until two weeks ago. These cable turf wars are bullshit! Unfortunately, they hoodwinked me the other day. I saw they were going to run the remake of THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER with Richard Chamberlain and Diana Scarwid (still have a crush on her!) and was dying to get a gander at it for comparison's sake. Sadly, it was the original, which I already have.

Just about every Sunday I run through the guide on TCM, and pick out some classics I just haven't gotten around to quite yet. Just caught To Catch A Thief, and put Streetcar Named Desire & On The Waterfront on there from this past week. Really should have gotten around to these sooner, but better late than never...

Another TCM program. Role Model: Gene Wilder - 7/18 at 4pm. Alec Baldwin interviews Gene Wilder about his extensive career.

The Sundance Channel just started playing Park Chan-Wook's I'm a Cyborg, but That's OK - which I don't think is available on DVD here yet. On right now, but also July 26, 28, and 29.

Really good idea for a thread, by the way.

The government fakes a Mars landing then sets out to kill the astronauts involved. Cast: Elliott Gould, James Brolin, Brenda Vaccaro. Dir: Peter Hyams. C-123 mins, TV-14, CC, Letterbox Format

Sam Raimi's CRIMEWAVE is gonna run a couple times on Encore Action over the next few days. First early Saturday (tomorrow) morning at 5:35 AM and again the morning of 7/23 at 1:00 AM.

Haven't heard a lot of favorable opinions of it, but curious to check it out.

Later on within the next couple of weeks, Melville's Army of Shadows and Cassavetes' Opening Night will be on the Sundance Channel.

I'd go back and re-check what dates/times, but my fucking Samsung DLP keeps popping like crazy so now I get to figure out whether or not the fans are screwed. Awesome. So yeah, look it up yourself if you're interested.
I DVRed Crimewave a couple of weeks ago. Not as much fun as I remember it being, but I still find it interesting.
Thank you for the heads up on Overlord and Killer of Sheep. Overlord was amazingly edited. Images, sounds and moments instead of straight scenes.

I looked at Killer of Sheep, and the image of the little boy in a dog's mask was so depressing I'm going to come back to it.

Army of Shadows is on Sundance Sat 25th at 5:30 CST, and repeats two more times after that.

Straight Into Darkness (2004)
July 26, 10:05 pm, Showtime Extreme

A WWII movie from the director of Stepfather II, Leatherface: TCM III, Puppet Master 4 & 5, and Pumpkinhead II. I know it's not the best pedigree. While the film itself is flawed, it has a lot of heart, and that more than makes up for the flaws.

Attack! (1956)
July 19, 6:20 am, HDNet Movies
July 27, 1:15 pm, HDNet Movies

Robert Aldrich's anti-political, anti-bureaucratic war film set during the Battle Of The Bulge. Starring Jack Palance, Lee Marvin, Eddie Albert, Buddy Ebsen, and Richard Jaeckel. Why this isn't more well known is a shame.

The Nest (2002)
July 20, 6:30 pm, Encore Action

French Assault on Precinct 13. Check this out if you haven't already.

The Prodigy (2004)
July 24, 1:10 pm, Encore Action

"a little come-out-of-nowhere masterpiece"-- Film Threat

The Hitcher as a crime film. I wouldn't go so far as to call it a masterpiece, though. It's a little too long and the second act drags. Flaws aside, it's pretty awesome. The shootouts and fight scenes are better than most big budget movies.

Rolling Thunder (1977)
July 29, 10:30 am, Encore Action
August 26, 10:30 am, Encore Mystery
August 27, 1:45 am, Encore Mystery

Sorry it's not in HD, Phil. Everyone needs to see this.

Noise (2007)
Sundance Channel
Tuesday July 21 at 9:40AM
Tuesday July 21 at 3:55PM
Sunday July 26 at 1:30PM
Friday July 31 at 10:45AM

This is pretty great.

Sundance Channel description:

Innovative sound design and a refreshingly revealing perspective on police work and the psychological scars of violent crime distinguish this award-winning thriller, the feature-length directorial debut of Australia's Matthew Saville. The diverted career path of a young police constable (Brendan Cowell) suffering from tinnitus and blackouts collides with the investigation of a disturbing murder, which has filled a shocked suburban Melbourne town with guilt and suspicion. "Jaw-droppingly tense...a film of quiet exhilaration" - Empire.

This Is England (2006)
July 28, 4:00 am, Sundance Channel

My Darling Clementine (1946)
July 27, 11:05 am and 6:20 pm, Retro Channel
July 29, 8:00 am, Fox Movie Channel

Cocaine Cowboys (2006)
July 23, 5:00 am, HDNET Movies

Undertow (2004)
July 26, 7:55 am, MGM HD

It's pretty great, I was stoked to finally see it after having heard so much about it. One thing though: did anyone else have trouble hearing the dialogue during the first few kitchen scenes with Stan? I had to turn my set up incredibly loud and still couldn't hear a thing for about five minutes.
Is that the scene with Stan's wife standing over him, as he fixes the sink? She's basically belittling him and complaining, IIRC.

I had a couple issues with unclear dialog when I saw this at the Music Box, but given that it's a student film filled with non-actors, it's to be expected. I never felt lost watching the film, even when I didn't understand the character's words, so it was never a huge deal. I think it adds to the Neo-Realist feel, actually.

God, that was such a good movie. I remember not knowing what I felt about it when I first left the theater, but it definitely got under my skin because I still recall large portions of the film in great detail.

Not to derail the thread into a Killer of Sheep discussion (we can do that here), I just love the movie and think more people should see it.
Excellent. I can finally get Rolling Thunder off my list. I'm loving this thread, by the way.

You know I'm fond of this one. The realm of ultra low-budget action filmmaking is mostly a cesspool, but a few forgivable gripes aside I enjoyed THE PRODIGY quite a bit.

This late Wednesday/Thursday morning at 12:00 AM (eastern) the Fox Movie Channel will show CAPONE. It's Roger Corman's attempt to cash-in on the 70's mobsters craze ushered in by THE GODFATHER films. Featuring Ben Gazzara's rather colorful turn as Capone as well as tons of delightfully crude Italian and Irish stereotypes.

With Sylvester Stallone as Frank Nitti.

I brought this and Straight Into Darkness up in the B-Action thread eons ago. I can pretty much guarantee that it's better than anything in theaters right now.

Darkness is a different beast altogether. I think the director, Jeff Burr, did some stuff at the New Beverly. The best way I can describe it is a great feature length episode of The Twilight Zone. It's a hybrid of a war film, horror film, and siege film.

My hope is to get at least one person to see it.

Holy shit, The Terror of Tiny Town, the all midget western, is on TCM tonight at 2AM EST.

Also, Beware! The description I'm getting for that ROLLING THUNDER on the Encore Channels is for a TV movie from 1996, that has nothing to do with the classic movie. It's possible it's the right movie, but the Encore channels have shown this thing before, making me sad when I realized what is was.

Good to know.

Just saw that The Loved One will be on TCM August 4 at 3:30 pm. It's pretty great if you haven't seen it.

Now I know why CRIMEWAVE is so buried. Yowza.

Tuesday night at 9:30 PM (eastern) Encore Western is gonna run a film called BARQUERO. Never heard out of it before but it jumped out at me in the listings because it features Lee Van Cleef squaring off against Warren Oates.

Hope it's good, but it’s gonna be really hard for BARQUERO to live up to the standard set forth by its poster:

What a tagline.

TCM will be airing THE SPLIT (widescreen!!) on August 21 at 7:30 a.m. This 1968 action pic is not available on DVD and has never been issued on home video. It's based on an excellent Richard Stark novel (The Seventh) and has a jaw-dropping cast: Jim Brown, Gene Hackman, Ernest Borgnine, Donald Sutherland, Jack Klugman, Warren Oates and James Whitmore.

This is not one to be missed.
Thanks for that one. Been waiting to check that flick out since I first saw THE OUTFIT.

I know this is 3 months in advance but HDNet Movies will have Ong Bak 2 on October 21 and it's one of the movies that it previews at the same time it's in theaters (since it comes out in limited release in the US on 10/23).

Quote:
Ong Bak 2

Directed by: Tony Jaa
Written by: Panna Rittikrai
Starring: Tony Jaa, Sorapong Chatree, and Sarunyu Wongkrachang .

Set in medieval Thailand, this prequel features Ong Bak's Tony Jaa as a young nobleman who masters many martial arts disciplines in his journey of revenge. Expect stand-up-in-your-seat excitement as Jaa flies through the air; twisting, turning and demonstrating the utmost contempt for the laws of gravity. And now that he has added a full range of martial-arts styles to his repertoire, Jaa is twice as deadly and twice as exciting.

The first Ong Bak hit the world like a heat-seeking guided missile. A missile in the shape of Tony Jaa, touted as the new Bruce Lee and the can't-miss martial-arts superstar of his generation.

Ong Bak 2 is the HDNet Movies Sneak Preview for October, 2009. It premieres Wednesday, October 21st at 8 PM ET, with encore presentations at 10 and midnight Eastern Time that same night.

One of five films directed by Roger Corman in 1958. He was slacking though, that's four fewer than he did in '57.

This was shot in 2.35:1 and really needs to be seen wide. Problem is, AMC doesn't show anything in that format.

But yeah, we'll have to settle until a DVD release.
