Mega Man

If there's already a thread for the series, then my apologies.

Curious to see if there are Chewsters here who also grew up with the Mega Man titles. Got back into the original NES line-up after finding this site and recently hearing about an 8-bit Mega Man 9 released for Wii, X-Box and Playstation. Yes, I realize I'm behind the times!

Mega Man 9 was a great return to form. It felt like 2 and played like 1. It was not easy, but well worth it. Got sweaty fingers on the controller and would pause to wipe them before a hard part. That reminded me of Junior High gaming (and Mega Man) quite well.

I have a friend, perhaps a wee bit OC, who refuses to play a sequel to a game until he beats the preceding installments. He is currently almost finished with Mega Man 5 ('it kinda sucks!' he reports). I understand the Playstation Mega Men were of a superior quality.

Personally, I was always partial to Mega Man X! I loved getting the Gundam looking armor.

Mega Man 2 was my introduction to the series, and for my money, the toughest installment. I absolutely loved the X series on SNES. When I began rebuilding my SNES collection after it was stolen I went looking for the X series, and wow, those games are incredibly loved based on their Ebay and (former) Gamestop prices.

I am a fan. Downloaded and beat MM2 when it was released on WiiWare as a build-up to MM9, which I still haven't played.

I haven't played any of them beyond the early NES versions.

Until the SNES Mega Man X games, nothing was harder than the original Mega Man. It didn't even have a password.

Mega Man 9 is definitely a must if you liked the NES games. I'm not sure if it's put together quite as well as the old ones, but there's certainly been nothing like it in almost 20 years.

Jesus. Is he only compelled to follow numbered sequences? Because if he actually has to play every Mega Man game in chronological order of release, he's got like 30 games to go before Mega Man 9.

Stopped right after Mega Man X myself. Solid game, but by then I'd moved on. From the looks of it, the franchise had gotten pretty bad since (i.e. Mega Man Soccer?)

But with the retro-themed Mega Man 9 clicking with gamers, maybe we'll see more like Sonic the Hedgehog and what not.

Yeah, numerical sequence. Bit odd.

Mega Man 9 is way too fucking hard. Mega Man 1 you can at least clear half the levels without too many game overs, but Mega Man 9 is something else entirely. Fuck that game in the face.

2 is the best, 3 is also great, and 4 is somewhat relevant. I recall still renting it even though it was released around the time of the SNES.

I remember how one summer I begged for my mom to buy me Mega Man. We bought it at some video store bc it was the only place that had it. Then I Wily kicked my ass for the rest of the summer and most of the fall. Then I shoved it up that white haired bastard's ass.

Of course, Mega Man could be one of the dumbest video game protagonists in history, when in the end, he always lets Wily get away. I mean how times is Mega Man going to fall for "I'm so sorry, oh what's that over there...see-ya"?

Has anyone else gotten Mega Man 2 for the iPhone? No landscape on the original version which sucked, but the game was so easy, it really didn't matter. The updated version has "classic" (aka NES hard) mode. The controls stick suck, but a fun little time waster.

9's level design doesn't have that air of brilliance 2 and 3 did, but as a whole, the game is definitely worthy.

That said, in terms of difficulty, there are games in the X series that make this one seem like a delightful autumn day stroll through a fluffy kitten farm.

And yes, Mega Man 5 sucked. Don't know if it's made worse or better by the fact that it can be beaten in a half hour on your first playthrough.
