Tattoos & Piercings: Opinions? - Page 2

I wouldnt call it "pleasure" per se, but when getting them done, I closed my eyes, went into a state of peaceful, restorative meditation deeper than I've been able to accomplish any time, anywhere else, and was only able to stay there long as the pain kept going.

So, there's that.

'Damaged' is an overstatement. I'd say it does very often indicate a need to feel more unique and/or to seek attention. As someone who occassionally wears a shirt with Timmy from South Park that reads, "I'M SPECIAL!", I'm not going to pretend to be immune from those needs. Whether they are unhealthy (or 'damage') depends on the severity and the individual.

And this all applies equally to men. The thread was just aimed in a potential partners angle.

Anyone else eager to check out the episode of LA Ink where Kat (?) gets all her tattoos covered up with make up?

Tattoo are just forms of expression be it "glimpsers" that lead to conversation or full blown signed artwork

I have three tattoos and will likely have a good quarter of my body covered by the time I'm done. Quite simply I like the way they look. I get that some people don't like them. That's fine. But don't try to lump some pop psychology on to why I get ink done.
It's okay. You are a guy, and most of us are guys. We don't care whether you tattoo yourself or not, since it's "sexiness" is moot either way.

I suppose if I saw a bunch of you breaching the top of a hill, waving clubs, I might be a bit more worried than if I saw a bunch without tattoos. Tattoos on guys says "possibly scary motherfucker". On girls it just says "possibly the girlfriend of a scary motherfucker". Neither is sexy.

I certainly don't think people who get tatts are "damaged" in any way, but they do have a unique & shared mindset. Almost all the people I know who have them always want to get more. My wife, who likes to watch anything on TV pertaining to any kind of art, was a big fan of Miami & LA Ink, & hearing the customers talk about the meaning of tattoos they were getting, & seeing or hearing about the number they had & in the future intended to get, got to sound kind of similar after awhile. I guess I mean that it takes a certain kind to really get into them in a big way. Not a bad kind mind you, but a shared mindset. I'm not privy to it myself, but I think I can kind of relate. I love hot & spicy food. I have a lot of cookbooks with recipes on the subject, and many feature anecdotes or fun facts between the recipes. Some fans of hot & spicy food take it to near cult like status. I've read or heard about people who collect hundreds of different bottles of hot sauce in their kitchens. Chili cook offs are hugely attended by enthusiastic fans, & spawn great rivalries between the entrants. There's a lot of machismo and pleasure/pain going on for us, as well. And we kind of do feel a loose sense of community, as this is something the general, mundane American palate just doesn't appreciate. We chileheads kind of feel a little special because not only can we take the heat, but we enjoy & appreciate it on levels many will never be able to understand.
Well there are some chiliheads who are tattoo collectors as well and go full out with tattoos of flaming peppers, pepper braids, or their favorite sauce.

Yes the pain of a tattoo is pleasurable. That is because your body releases endorphins to cope with the pain. It is a type of high.

I love tattoos on girls or guys, either is sexy as long as they're done well and there's been some thought put into the size/placement. I've got just one but planning on winding up with quite a few more - right now I have a blue rose on my spine (top just below the nape of my neck and the stem finishing around the bra-strap line) with my name written in the stem (really subtly, most people don't even notice it spells anything). I designed it myself and got it done a few months after I turned 18. It's easy to cover up when I need to and nice to show off with a backless dress or top in the summer.

My boyfriend likes tattoos but doesn't want me to get too many, and he hates big ones. I can see this being a problem in the future because I want some big designs at some point - possibly a half sleeve or something big on my thigh. My next one is gonna be something small either on my wrist or hip though, which he has no problem with. He doesn't like the idea of changing my body at all though really, he gets very upset when I talk about saving up for breast implants and getting my teeth fixed.

I'm not a big fan of piercings - I've just got my ears done and I'll probably get my belly button done at some point, and maybe just one facial piercing. I'm not keen on the face full of metal look (though it suits some girls, I was briefly involved with a girl who had a lot of facial piercings and it looked hot on her, she just had the right look for it), and nipple/genital piercings make me cringe so much. I can't see them without imagining the pain - urgh.

I got five across my back last year, and I'll be the guy to say "Yeah, they're fucking addictive". If I had the money, I'd have both arms dome completely. I got my nipples pierced a few months ago and the pane was so insain I blacked out about 5 minutes after the second one was stuffed in. Both my ears are done, and I have a small spike through my brow. i think getting a frenum is next on my list. I just like them. Not making any statement on my joke-like badassery, I just think it's nice. I think Kat Von D is a freaking goddess. When she did the concealer a few weeks ago, she DID look great without, but I much prefer with.

I have a tatoo ive designed i've been thinking about for years ever since i first spoke with hunter thompson on the phone in 2004. its like a take off on his gonzo symbol. however, i;m too much of a chicken to get one (so far at least) because of the "what if i hate it when im 40? " line of thinking
edit: used to have my lip done, but took it out over two years ago as i thought it sent the wrong image at my job where i needed to look more posh.

edit: just noticed this is in the sex forum? shouldnt it be a more general interest thread? tattoos are not all about sex and neither are piercings.

True enough, but some, myself included, find some forms of tattoo sexy. I was curious if others did as well, leaving aside other considerations.

No. I was an intern (or, 'runner' as we were called) for a well known news network during the 2004 DNC in boston. We had to pay to stay in boston U dorms during the event, and one of the people in my dorm was the son of a sunday news program personality (at the time his father was not in charge of a sunday news show and i was only vaguely aware of who his dad was). he was trying to get thompson to speak at his college, and one day while we were all standing around (as it turns out one often has to do while waiting for interesting stuff to happen at a convention-- not saying that to say the convention was lame, it wasnt, probably the best experience of my life till convention 08 or inaugeration 09) , he shoved a phone in my face and said "talk to him". i said "hello??" and there was silence and then thompson mumbled and said a bunch of sentence fragments i can barely remember ( i do not think he could hear me either, reception was bad or something). then he asked if i was at the convention, adn told me to "watch kerry's speech and take acid, because thats the only way you could watch it and not go pig-crazy". i will never forget those words. i did not know who i was speakign with at the time or i would have said i was a fan. sadly he killed himself less than a year later in february 05. even if it was a very confused 30 second "conversation", i still got the cool advice about the kerry speech (advice i should have followed in retrospect... 'i'm john kerry and i'm reporting for duty!' ... gag me)

Tattoos-instant turnoff
Piercings-belong only on women's ears, more than two per ear look ridiculous.
Those fucking nose stud things look fugly, nothing more disheartening than seeing the profile of a cute chick, then having her turn the other way and seeing a shiny nose zit.

1) what if its a cool tattoo? not "tribal" or butt butterfly or what have you? would it be ok then? been considering a cool one for a while

2) i've had a tasteful facial piercing. it looked fine. i took it out and do not have it anymore, but it was not fugly or disheartening.
The size, shape, design is irrelevant.
There's nothing tasteful about a facial piercing.

I think there are plenty of people who would disagree. Not saying you are wrong, I am saying its a matter of opinion. My lip ring was very tasteful, and even my parents who flipped out when I got it eventually chilled out about it and relented that it was not bad. I felt it was quite discreet and unobtrusive, and I chose it because it looked classy. Many of my friends agreed. Basically I'd describe it as the kind of piercing that would not look out of place at a job interview (and indeed interviewed for my job with it in where it did not cause any problems that I am aware of). It wasn't some giant thing that drew your eye. It was there and enhanced my features but wasn't the kind of thing that you'd stare at. I've got some friends who, and i love em, have gone a wee bit too far with piercings in my opinion so I'll admit some of them can be a bit much, yes.

So can we agree that perhaps some facial piercings are tasteful?

That flags up another topic: is that a positive phenomenon, or an unsavory form of projection? Should a tattoo be taken as an ipso facto signifier (a la Chris Rock's intelligence that a pierced tongue is a indicator of high potential for fellatio), or is it a form of art that is properly considered neutral of sexual connotation? Many people get tattoos to appear sexy, even if only to themselves, but also, and at the same time, by no means are they universally and unambiguously sexual.

Oh, no doubt most people who get tattoos get them for reasons other than to be more appealing sexually. But on those occasions when they do, or when by happy accident it turns out that way, I was curious who else appreciated them in that way.

I don't see anything negative about being attracted to tattoos or piercings from a PURELY aesthetic point of view. As I said in the opening post, I don't like excessive surface area covered in ink, because, as Tim said, it "spoils the scenery". But smaller tatts that accentuate a person's physical attributes can be very attractive, just to look at. If you bring connotations to your appreciation, such as presumed trampiness, etc., then it can be negative. But if you're doing that, you're likely to bring such impressions to the table about other things, like manner of dress or even hairstyles & such, anyway.

I love a tatted and pierced girl. Cry for attention? No doubt. Doesn't make them any less sexy to me.

Wow Iggy, first off you misspelled a word in the first sentence of the subject, don't think I'd want you as an attorney. I think that tattoos are the most pure art form there is. They have been around since the dawn of time. In some cultures it's a very significant symbol of a right of passage. They are painful yes, but not to the point that you can't tolerate it. I personally have 9, one of which is on my jugular vein. My girlfriend, who is also my apprentice has 5, one of which I did personally back in April. A lot of religious folks think it's an abomination, claiming, "the body is the temple of the lord". Well guess what... every church I've ever been in had pictures on the wall, so what's the difference? Most people that get tattoos really don't care what others think about them. It's just a personal choice of expression. As far as whether a girl with tattoos is sexy is a matter of opinion. In my opinion, a heavily tattooed woman is an extremely sexy creature, although, being a professional tattoo artist may make me slightly biased. But I felt this way long before I ever touched a tattoo gun. I find, "tramp stamps", "landing pads" or "skeet targets" extremely sexy. As long as they are quality work, they look great in my eyes. Piercings, I personally don't care for, I was born with all the necessary holes that I need. Now the inter-dermal modifications, (basically lumps under the skin) I find absolutely disgusting, but as with everything else, to each his or her own. With that being said, I must get back to drawing up designs for customers later this afternoon.

I don't think so. I always viewed tats, or atleast my tats as something I like, nothing more. Same way I pick out a t-shirt I like, or a pair of jeans.

for me, small tattoos on a woman are fine. Sleeves, or peices that are bigger then a fist are just unattractive to me on a woman. I think it takes away from their natural beauty. Guys on the other hand, we are naturally gross, so tat it up.

Piercings on women? Just the ears, and not too many there either. Lobes, double lobes, and maybe a upper one or two. I hate it when women have their whole ear completely done up. Eyebrow, nose, or lip... once they get past 24, no, just makes them look immature.

I have two piercings in each ear. I wear a stud on top, and a hoop on the bottom. I pierced them myself with a needle in my mid-twenties. I don't wear them all the time, only if I'm out at the bar. Tats and piercings are great ice-breakers, they give the opposite sex an excuse to approch, and hopefully, touch you.

I was talking to a young woman yesterday about a visit to the doctor she had to undergo to have her upper eyelid lanced and drained because of an infection from a piercing. She had on a tight t-shirt and I couldn't look her in the eyes because of the obvious barbells in her nipples.

Well, I got my first tattoo at a fairly mature age (31), it covers a good portion of my upper back, and I probably have low self esteem, though it isn't the reason I got the tat. I rarely wear clothes to show it off, and I love it, my husband likes it, so fuck anyone else who has a problem with it.

So, if all goes to plan, next month I'm going to be getting this tattoo on my back shoulder area:

I've been wanting to do a Ghostbusters tatt for a while (well, since ever), just couldn't find the right design. UNTIL NOW [/trailervoice]

I'm not even into GB, but I can't help but get behind the idea of a marshmallow skeleton.

PS Do you worry about GB3 soiling the franchise's legacy, the Lucas Effect? Would that give you pause before going for it?

I don't post much and given I'm a tattoo artist I'm clearly biased but here's my two cents. Tattoos aren't for everyone, piercings either, but in my humble opinion they're sexy as fuck. I have some stupid stuff from my military days but I also have things I love. A good artist, especially if he freehands, is a craftsman. You can take a slim girl and give the illusion of a little curve with the right back piece. Again, I'm on the art side of the argument, ugly tattoos are still ugly. If you look at the work of guys like Paul Booth, Filip Leu, Shige, Grime or Guy Aitchison and can't love something they've done you're just being stubborn. I'm nearly suited and I don't regret it. When I'm old and wrinkly I'll be more concerned with getting to the head in time. On the flipside though my wife has her ears pierced and not a drop of ink. And just to be a dick I live in Hawaii and do a lot of big custom pieces so when I'm working on some hot Filipino girls full back piece and she's got her nakedness all over the table I'll be strong for everyone that doesn't like tattoos. Heh.
I was going through security in an airport recently behind a 20-something young lady. She took off her shoes and I noticed a small butterfly on her foot in an odd place. I asked why she picked that spot and she said "so I can cover it with flip-flops when I want to look professional.

Luckily we separated soon after, so I didn't laugh at her. I like tattoos well enough, but the thought of covering one with flip flops to be professional was almost too much to bear.
I've decided to get a tattoo. Nothing crazy or anything. I'm not a big fan of elaborate designs. After a while I decided on this, which I'll be getting tomorrow.

It's from Blade Runner.

I was thinking either the usual upper arm spot on the right side, or right shoulder blade (so I'd never have to see it).

I'm not too worried about it hurting. I'm more worried about the guy fucking it up. My girlfriend who has used him before assures me he's really good. It's a simple design of course so I can't imagine it's that difficult, but it seems like it would be easy to fuck up.

I dig your Ghostbuster design, Greg. If I were more artistic in the way I'd try to do something Back to the Future related.
