2009 British Open - Can Watson Close It Out?

When I was growing up in the late 70s/early 80s, Tom Watson was my favorite golfer. He's on that "second tier" of golfing greats, not quite Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer or now Tiger, but he was pretty damn good. In the 80s, he was the first golfer to earn $500,000 for an entire year.. now golfers get that by finishing like second or third in one tournament.

Watching him playing the British Open the last two days has been tremendous. I don't watch a lot of golf anymore, but it's great watching him turn back the clock and teach the youngsters a thing or two this weekend.

I can't see him shooting anything below 74 tomorrow, but it I'll be cheering my ass off for him.

... and the answer is no. He went into 18 with a one-stroke lead and bogeyed. The second shot killed him.

He gave it a valiant run.

I'll just chime in to say that other than the '05 WS with the White Sox I was probably rooting harder for Watson here than any other entity in any sporting event this decade, including the Bears in their Super Bowl vs. the Colts. Just so bummed that he couldn't close it out.

3 of the last 5 majors had 4 golfers (Norman, Mickelson, Duvall, and Watson) who all were in position to win on Sunday and whose victories would have been amazing to watch. Instead we get a bunch of guys whose names I can't remember. I never knew the sport could be as frustrating to watch as it is to play.
