Ok so I take back some of things I said, I really like this look. It reminds me of a school teacher/professor which is an interesting direction to take.

Thoughts?

Mmmmm.. looks gorgeous.

Wait, we're talking about this right? School teacher whatnow?

Yes, thats the pic. He does look a hell of a lot like my old science teacher dressed like that, and bizzarly it gives him a kind of timeless look.

And yes the assistant is very easy on the eyes.
That's almost exactly the look I was expecting him to have . . . minus the boots. And yeah, I think it works wonders for the guy. The camera adds 10lb's, they say - tweed seems to add 15-20 years.
I like it. It's a complete change from Tennant.
I really like it. It's a good way to counteract the youth of Matt Smith by having him dress so old, plus my favourite Doctor rocked a bowtie as well:

Reminds me of a Latin professor from high school. I like it very much.
There are some better pictures here

I think Smith looks great in some of them, kind of retro-chic, not sure about the one with him stood next to the Tardis doing that weird autistic finger twitch thing.

Like the look of the new Doctor and I love the slight redesign of the Tardis, seems to be a bit more old skool now.

Hello! Already the best looking companion since the reboot. I'm on board.

Oh, and I hope the new guy works.

Tardis looks very different from the one used by Tenanat, I actually think it looks worse for the redesign. I loved seeing the lights inside it actually helped give the impression it was bigger on the inside.

For comparision:

That Daily (Hate) Mail article mentions Billie will be back in Tennant's final episodes. Sigh.

I thought they had definitely finished with her?
He's wearing suspenders? Okay, even more sold than I was before.

And I don't think the TARDIS design is all that different.

It’s not a major redesign, it just seems bigger and slightly newer looking.

I’ve heard a few people report that Alex Kingston has been seen on set, so we might be seeing River Song in this season after all. Although this is hardly confirmed.

I'ts not hugley different I know, I just liked the fact the Tardis was starting to show it's age a bit and now looks brand new again.
I love it. It's 100% Doctor, timeless but oddly out of place, at the same time.

And Karen Gillan? Oh my... I go weak at the knees for a redhead, but a SCOTTISH redhead? Yeah, she's going to be a lot of young kid's first crush. The lucky little buggers.
Rupert Giles: The College Years. I mean that as a good thing. And - yes - Karen Gillan is beautiful.
"That TARDIS lookes at least 50% bigger than it's predecessors in terms of height and width...looks more like one of those automatic toilets!! As a reader of the Daily Mail for over 40 ye..." <click!>
post #18 of 303
the pic in the first post is so much better than the official pic thats been floating around today ...

I don't like his look in the other photo at all... he got a chris eccleston type outfit, modern black jacket and black sweater (its only shoulders up). The worst part of th other picc was his hair, though... it looked like shit, knot-ridden and dirty, too.

But I have faith in moffat , and he wouldnt have cast this guy unless he was right (although lets be honest, Oliver from coupling was just about the worst idea and casting choice, ever!)

EDIT; THe other pic (which is very contradictory to the other picture, and frankly has me worried, to say the least):

-- Can you say grease-ball?

So what do we think-- Which is the real outfit? He could easily be wearing the professor outfit from the first post for some role hes playing within the episode-- and its less likely he'd wear the modern one for a reason like that.

Fear not, that is an old pic released to coincide with the announcement that he would be the new Doctor. The tweed jacket, bowtie look is the final look.

That isn't his outfit, that picture has been circulating since the announcement he was the eleventh doctor. I just think it was a cheap and cheerful promo still done before they got the costuming done properly.

My bad-- Phew!

hmm, hadnt seen it before, and aintitcool posted this today and said BBC just released the first official pics--- a bit misleading!

EDIT: Any news about Water of Mars? The site still says "later this year" ... I hope it isnt that british holiday that was like nov 11th -- Thats WAY too close to christmas, and too long since planet of the dead.....

Like when Craig was first announced as Bond. He looked like a damn hobo:

Then they made him do the shot again:

5th November for Waters of Mars, then Finale Parts 1,2 and 3 over Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Years Eve respectively.

Moffat and RTD have always been very good with costuming (just look at how good Tennant's costuming was or the leads in Jekyll) so I'd have no worry about how the Doctor looks. Seeing Smith in those clothes really made me see the Doctor rather than some weird looking kid, which goes to show just how on the ball they are with this sort of thing.
the tweed jacket seems to entirely hide the fact he looks about 17. Besides it might just be a costume he's wearing for one episode, to infiltrate planet of the paedo-latin teachers or something.

is Karen Gillan being re-tooled as a new character (modern day assistant eye candy) the way Freema Agyeman was?
Didn't they used to let the actor playing the Doctor wander around the wardrobe department and put the basics of their outfit together themselves?

Considering that the Doctors have never really been all that stealthy or sneaky and each of them had one iconic look I'd suggest we won't be seeing too much costume changing.

Yeah that's what I read; they let the actor piece together the costume themselves so they will be comfortable in it.
I like the costume, it will look good next to all the other Doctors and it has a very Young Guy Dressing Old vibe to it that is appropriate.
Riversong has to be coming back this season, doesn't she? They sure as fuck went to great lengths to set her up as being significant in Moffats two parter last year so I can't imagine she is going to get glossed over, unless they have really fucked up.
RE: mr adam -- Was karen gillian in an earlier episode? Which one?

And I didnt know the christmas finale was 3 parts -- thats very cool, as these glorified episodes being called "specials" was starting to piss me off.

Too bad the wait for part three of the last one will be longer, I imagine everyone will be on the edge of their seat

Also, Ive always been a fan of the cleaned up classier looking doctors, so Im also on board with the professor look.
The TARDIS in those shots looks more like the original Hartnell version (Moffat even made a little jab at the 9th/10th Doctor TARDIS in 'Blink', about how the dimensions were off).
I can see him as Dr. Who. He looks great in the photos.
It's about time we had a Republican pundit Doctor Who.
I'm doing a phoner with Julie Gardner (Who/Torchwood producer) tomorrow, and I'll take any questions you interested folks might have.
That picture with him next to the Tardis kind of sold it.
Looks pretty good, and I'll definitely be giving the show another chance now Moffatt's in charge. I know everyone loves Tennant but I just find the combination of him and RTD's increasingly tiresome lightweight flippancy to be an overdose of cutesy smuggitude.

You are referring to the outside of the TARDIS, right? I didn't see any photos of the interior.
I was a bit dubious about the new guy, but the costume sells it for me.

Along with the outside, I'm pretty sure i've heard that the TARDIS interior is getting a redesign too- maybe it will move back to something more akin to pre-reboot. I never loved the new design- it seemed needlessly complicated and messy.
From what I can tell this is essentially a reboot of the show so they're trying to change as much as possible, they even seem to be getting in new directors and a new composer which is a shame because I really liked what Graham Harper and Euaros Lynn brought to the series as directors (Harper's experience and Lynn's visually inventiveness) and I always loved Murray Gold's music.
Both the Tardis exterior and Interior are getting a new look because this series is being filmed in HD, so they've had to redo them as it's all looking a bit shabby.
Actually I'd be glad to see someone take over from Murray Gold to be honest. I like some of his stuff in concept but he has a tendency to really take things a bit to far over the top. Some of his tunes sound like they suffer from Little Mans Syndrome- like he is overcompensating for the fact that the tunes are for a T.V. show instead of the big screen.
I'm convinced. I wasn't sure about Matt Smith in the earlier pictures but I love this look. Cute nerdy guys = yes. Also gorgeous redhead assistant = yes; nice to finally be getting back to the assistant as eye candy idea instead of whatever was going on with Catherine Tate. Much approval for the new pics
post #41 of 303
Gold earned my everlasting love for that amazing orchestration of the opening theme.
I got into the show late but I do like the look of this new Doctor. I loved Eccleston right away but it took a few episodes for me to like Tenant, I wonder how long it will take for the new one. Also, the specials will be out on those previously announced days only in England or for the US too? And while I'm happy for the HD Dr Who, the seasons weren't cheap before, I shudder to think what they'll cost in blu-ray.
Murray Gold's Cyberman theme is probably one of my favourite pieces of scoring in a long, long, long, time. It's kind of hilarious that such a high energy piece of music was used for any enemy who are so ridiculously dull in the new series.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dHaYOJj5Maw

That song's probably an indication of his excess, but I just love the sheer over the insane Wagnerianess of it.
Also for all of you hoping for a quiet or calm doctor you're going to be out of look. Matt Smith played the Doctor as manic in his screen test and onset reports are saying that this Doctor is arrogant and full of, sigh, Swagger.

Also Moffat's down to write half the episodes next year, but Paul Cornell and Neil Gaiman are both looking to be locks for writing episodes and their is definitely another Gatiss episode (his other episode was the Dicken's episode with Ecclestone)
I honestly didn’t expect it to happen due to how unexcited he was in the confidentials but it looks like John Simm is definitely back as the Master. It also seems like everyone’s favourite murderous Somerfields manager is going to make an appearance in the finale too.

Sorry Spike do you mean both of those people will be in Tennats final eppisode or the final of the new series?

Wha? Gaiman's writing one?

As a typical, under-informed American I watched a few episodes of the Eccleston series, and I thought the concept was cute but the production values and the sometimes-shoddy feel of the thing kept me from watching further (I had zero idea that Who was such an instituion in the UK, let alone any idea how long the show had been running).

Tennant made me a quasi-fan, though. I caught some of his episodes and found myself clicking with the show. I still don't understand why everything happens in Cardiff (outside budgetary reasons, that is), and I'm still underwhelmed by some of the acting/scripting, but the show's really grown on me - to the point where I'd be inclined to show Tennant's Who to my future kids some day.

Hoping the new guy is as fun to watch. Knowing Gaiman's writing an episode is some rich icing on the cake.

I meant the three part finale over Christmas transitioning into Matt Smith's run. The trailer I've seen looked incredible, very apocalyptic and surprisingly dark.

Jesse: The show is primarily based in Cardiff because that's where the crew are based and where Russel T Davis is from. You've also got to remember that Who is family entertainment, it's Basically a step up from a Children’s show. It’s cult audience is partially built around the fact it’s writing can be very sharp at times and partially because it has got 40 years of history in this country and can tap into social history in a way no other show can.

It's also a lot of fun.

Thanks for the clear up Spike. I take it you can't tell us much about the trailer?
It's apparently leaked so it's probably hovering around on youtube, but yeah it's probably wise to not discuss stuff which the beeb is taking down with impunity.
