Roast of Joan Rivers

The commercials for this aren't annoying. In fact, the one where the old ladies get beat up are kind of funny. Need to find who is on the line-up.

I wonder if there will be jokes about her husband who comitted suicide. Her daughter will feel much heat as well.

Get ready for some Nip/Tuck punchlines, folks. The line-up of tormentors has just been announced for Comedy Central's Roast of Joan Rivers. The legendary comedienne/Apprentice champ/plastic surgery cautionary tale will take her turn on the dais when the show airs on Aug. 9 at 10 p.m. ET., and we have a feeling that the prick of a Botox needle will probably seem painless compared to the delightfully filthy barbs administered by Roast Master (Roast Mistress?) Kathy Griffin.

Joining Griffin in the dirty-joke dogpile are: Everybody Loves Raymond/'Til Death's Brad Garrett, old-school icon Carl Reiner, and nervous nebbish Gilbert Gottfried, as well as Jeffrey Ross, Lily Tomlin, Mario Cantone, and Richard Belzer. In other words, it's gonna get messy. Judging from the networks' past roasts, the evening should be heavy on extended, multi-second bleeps. These folks like to work blue. And they'll no doubt be at their bluest teeing off on Rivers -- a dame who's always been a master (mistress) of the ruthless put-down.

So which one of these roasters will land the best -- by which we meanest -- plastic surgery joke? And where the heck is Lisa Lampanelli?
Interesting line-up.

Definitely a better line-up than the Larry the Cable Guy Roast. I'm definitely gonna check it out.

Jeff Ross might go there. He made a Kurt Cobain joke to Courtney Love at the Pam Anderson roast.

Is Giraldo not on hand? Cause for concern if he isn't. He's pulled way ahead of Ross at these things.

Since she's actually a "comic" perhaps the roast will stay more focused on her. There's certainly enough there to attack (though 90% of it will probably be about her freakish face). What I hate about these things is how they'll have all these comics that don't know shit about the person being roasted, nor do any of us care, and so they just do a bunch of jokes about Lisa Lampenelli fucking black guys.

Griffin? Belzer? Tomlin? Holy shit, I'm there!

This also. Lampenelli is a one-joke act, and her absence wouldn't take anything away from the proceedings.

If Elizabeth Taylor and Joan Collins don't show up for this, it will all be for naught.

Gilbert definitely will. He was making 9/11 jokes days after the incident.

Only if they go Rogue. Apparently the roastee can give a list of "off the table" subjects. When Rivers was on Stern she said her daughter and her deceased husband were out of bounds. We'll see though.

This Tom Arnold set is fucking painful.
Did anybody else notice they forgot to bleep a "fuck"?
Far and away the weakest of the roasts they have done, yes far...far worse than the one for Larry the Cable Guy. It's sad when cue card reading Donald Trump is only behind Ross and Giraldo as one of the top 3 funniest roasters.

Like I said before, I really, really, really wish that the LTCG roast had been like the Chevy Chase one, where the jokes just got meaner and meaner and suddenly the target would realize that nobody was joking and everyone really hated him.

That woulda made me happy.

This roast was really weak tea. I loved the Bob Saget one. That one was gold.

Not very strong, aside from Giraldo as usual. Glad I watched it just to learn he has a special airing this Sunday.

Gotta say that Ross' "Kanye's Mom had a better plastic surgeon" did bust gut.

That Chevy Chase roast was something that can just never be duplicated. Heck, it probably never should be as people would stop agreeing to be roasted. The dynamic of watching somebody who you've heard is a miserable human being coming to the realization that he's just hated, while on camera...just wow.

Ross is usually good in these things and he's one of the reasons I tune into the roasts.

I really wish I saw the Chevy Chase one. Man, that sounds awesome.

The Chevy roast is "comedy legend". I think he said in one of his books, or maybe an interview, that it was his roast that made him realize how everyone really saw him.

If anyone listens to the Stern show roasts, the Comedy Central ones seem like children's programming in comparison.

Giraldo was great and I quite liked Gottfried. But this was weak sauce, mainly because there's nothing to be said about Rivers that she hasn't already said about herself. Quivers took the biggest hits with the molestation jokes and musings about her race and racial preferences for dating white guys. However, whereas as Robin will probably laugh all of this off Griffin probably went home in tears. She takes these things so personally.

The Chevy Chase roast was the first one I saw and it has remained a classic.

If they were allowed to do Melissa jokes (Giraldo and Ross were the only ones that didn't have their jokes prescreened) it could have made for a better roast, but other than that you're right. They need to stop roasting people who ARE the joke.

Hey don't forget Jeffery Ross, but yeah your mostly right. Although funny thing about Robin is I believe she has only dated one white guy and that was Jim Florentine. Before that she was with a black guy for 10 years. It's one of those funny comedians things where they just need ammo so they borderline invent things. When Adam Carolla's radio show was still on he told the story about Nick Dipalo coming up to him before a roast and asking him if he were half mexican. Adam told him no but later during the roast Nich says "Adam is half mexican which means not only is his name Carolla but he was born in one".

Also your 100% on Kathy Griffin. Shes talks alot of shit about people but when someone says the smallest thing about her she can't take it. I think she really is funny but that always bothered me about her.
