Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box

As most of you know Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box comes out on the DS in August.

and if you don't know, then now you know.

Anyway, there hasn't been a thread yet and it's coming out in about a month and I'm excited for some more puzzle action. There are a bunch of great DS games coming out in August and September, but this will be the first game on my list to pre-order.

The link to the trailer does look great.

I watched the E3 video via The Nintendo Channel, and it does look exciting. Still working on the first one, though. Hopefully I'll knock that out pretty soon.

Can't wait! As long as there isn't anything like the goddamn apple puzzle I'll be happy.
I had no idea this was coming out in August! Awesome! I loved the first Prof Layton game, so I'll definitely be picking this one up.

This should be out Tuesday. Anyone else as excited to get back to puzzling as I am?
Yes please hurry and release it please

I'm going to try to get it at best buy on Tuesday because paying $5 extra at Gamestop is utterly lame.

well idiot me thought the game came out tommorrow.

WRONG it came out today. And best buy is selling out FAST. I had to go to a 3rd location all the way across town to get it today. And they are already on backorder on their website.

The only reason that best buy I went to had it, was because they didn't realize it came out and hadn't set them out yet.

Oh shit! Thanks for the heads up.

Jesus. Amazon and Target.com's website is sold out.. Amazon says you can buy it and they will ship it to you in 1 to 2 months.

I wonder what EB games thinks about this..
Yup, best buy and futureshop are totally sold out in Vancouver. FUCK.

well I'm a complete idiot as I totally f'ed up the SECOND puzzle. I suck.

Thank goodness for reset.
Loved the first game, despite some of the more infuriating puzzles. Looking forward to this game (and the wave of great DS software coming within the few months.)
I hate you all. My local Best Buy says this doesn't come out until tomorrow. I want to answer riddles just to find out if there's room at the inn right now, dammit!

Turns out the game had multiple release dates depending on the store. The game really was set to come out on MONDAY, but for some reason most stores just assumed it was Tuesday.

I can say I spent 20+ minutes last night trying to pack Luke's suitcase properly... and finally succeeded.

Breezed through everything up to the stupid little girl's folded paper puzzle, which crushed my 3am brain. My only complaint is how they programmed all these comments from Layton + kid that pop up when your tapping around the screen looking for hint points, needless hassle, I'm searching!

Feels good to be puzzle solving again.

Oh, fuck you. I keep failing the second puzzle. :P
post #21 of 37
The window one? Really?

Hint: It's the one with a flag in the view that faces the sunrise ;p haha
post #22 of 37
Got too cocky.

Was 23 for 23 on puzzles (even the paper folding one from before, I was thinking inches and not TENTHS of an inch), even doing those stupid slider puzzle piece and pancake stack ones pretty quickly, and then I made a fatal mistake. I started thinking to myself, "Man, they either seriously kiddied down the difficulty on this one or I'm just freaking awesome at puzzles after the 1st Layton".

Then came the puzzle where you need to figure out the ratio of clouds to sky and I'm completely stonewalled.

On a side note, does anyone know approx (puzzle solving varies a lot I'd imagine) how long this game is supposed to be? I ask because I'm only an hour and 40 min into the game and I've "revealed" (not necessarily solved) half of the mysteries in the game. I don't seem to remember racking them up so quickly in the original.. and the train is pretty small compared to the entire town of the original.

the last game had over 100 puzzles I think it was 120??

I just did the cloud puzzle last night. That was one of the easier ones.

Yeah, I was whacked out on Sudafed and cough syrup, which in retrospect was the worst possible time to play a puzzle game.

as soon as I got off the train..

I did 1 puzzle and all of a sudden I had missing puzzles back at the witch lady's house. How did I miss them??

Baloney!

Your missing puzzles probably came from advancing the game to the point where you could no longer backtrack to where they were (ie: getting off the train)

And just givin' ya a hard time, Jake

The box says 150+ puzzles but I'm not sure if that includes the bonus area puzzles or not. In the first game a lot of the mysteries were revealed and quickly solved near the end of the game. FWIW, I'm about four hours in and only have the top row of mysteries uncovered (only one is solved).

Did you figure out the window puzzle? It really is easy if you sit back and look at the whole screen for hints.

Does anyone understand the fishing net puzzle? That one makes no sense to me at all.
Yeah, I gave up and spent some hint coins on it -Tried drawing out the grid and everything like it says and I still haven't got it solved. I know that theres sections where the sky/cloud sections are basically just mirrors of other sections, all but two pure sky boxes.. still won't take any of my anwsers. I guess I suck at ratio'izing or something, my brain just won't compute. Everything up to this seemed really easy in comparison, and I'm sure once I figure this out I'll slap my forehead with an "oh yeah!".. but this stupid puzzle is blocking my progression through the rest of the game and pissing me off.
Well, here's the answer if you finally get to the point of wanting to chuck your DS at the wall: The ratio is 6:4. Six sky and four cloud. If you take out the two block that are sky-only, you're left with eight blocks. It can be tricky to tell depending on how well you drew your grid but the remaining eight blocks are all pairs that are inverses of each other. They effectively cancel each other out, creating four sky and four cloud blocks. Add the two solid sky block and there's your ratio. I hope that made sense for you.

If it's any consolation, shortly after you get past that puzzle the game really opens up.
Oh my god.

So you're telling me I've been overthinking this puzzle? I [ got 6:4 and then started trying to reduce it to a smaller ratio. 3:2, out of some wierd lingering school-habit. When that didn't take I tried 2:0 since if you cancel out the mirrors there's just 2 pure sky.. everything I could think of except trying the larger, obvious ratio ] .. commence feeling like an idiot and slapping forehead as predicted.

Thanks!
Hahaha, that's awesome. I had the same overthinking problem with a lot of the riddles in the first game.

I finished in about 11 hours, but I also only found 116/138 puzzles. And there are still the Layton Challenges and DLC puzzles after that.

god.. I totally screwed up the 3 candidate election puzzle. I was just writing in numbers, because I couldn't figure it out.

awful.

Also, they are showing Layton commercials on cable now. Very Cool!
So, the girl/boy portrait puzzle has me completely stumped. It would help if I knew if that Peppermint Patty looking fucker (or any of the other androgynous people next to him/her) was a boy or a girl.
Hmm, which one is that? I don't even remember that one. Does anyone know where I'm supposed to take Picture #1? I've been all over town and can't find where I'm supposed to take it. Is it in the fancy restaurant that I can't get into because of the shithead bouncer? If I missed my chance to get in because I beat the main story I'm going to be annoyed.

Also, the mystery of the town is fucking ridiculous.
Its a puzzle you get in the center of the town celebrating the 50th anniversary, fairly soon after you first arrive. I should just use up some hint coins but its kind of bullshit that I have to. And I was doing so well too.

took me 13 hours and I got 125 puzzles completed.

I want to go back to do that around the world chess puzzle though..
