Best Break Up Songs - Page 2

"By the Time I Get to Phoenix", anyone? Also, "Halah", by Mazzy Star, got some significant play time after my last breakup even though I'm not sure what the song itself is about.

Moloko's Over and Over, a really epic, intimate song.

The Magnetic Fields, Book Of Love. Avoid the Peter Gabriel version. While great, he also makes it sincere. For a break up you want the sarcastic, bitter original.

Another wonderful version: Mike Doughty's version on the album "Golden Delicious."

No idea if it's sincere or not.

I've always loved Blue Collar Suicide by the Refreshments as a kiss-off song:

Quote:
She threw a leash around my neck and started spending all my money
I ate her cookin' night and day even though I thought it tasted funny
She's got me trapped inside her house, days and nights and holidays
No escape was to be found I tried a thousand, billion ways

But, if I could, you know I would run away...right now.

I can't sleep cause she snores like a chainsaw
And I can't eat 'cause she can't cook
And I can't write - she got all my inspiration
And she can't count all the pills I took

I really like that one.

A lot of people have connections to Weezer's takes on the subject, like "The World Has Turned And Left Me Here" and "Knock Down Drag Out."

I always preferred orchestral pieces as opposed to songs with lyrics, and with that in mind, after my divorce, I listened a lot to Mahler's Fifth Symphony, most notably, the Adagietto... or 4th Movement.

There is something horribly soul-crushing, yet strangely uplifting about it.

Fuck wallowing in it!

Lil Wayne feat. Baby - "Comfortable"

I'm not a huge fan of his, but I really like this song.

highlights:

My love for you, is real
Baby if you don't love me
Somebody else will
So don't you. ever. get too. comfortable

(part of the song's chorus)

and

Yeah to the left to the left
If you want to leave be my guest, you can step
Feeling irreplaceable listening to Beyonce
But ok ill put you out on your BDay

(part of the first verse)

Song sounds like a love song, but it's quite the opposite...great song for reminding yourself there's plenty of fish in the sea!

If you want a whole album of songs about love affairs gone bad, Old Blue Eyes did a theme album called "Only The Lonely" which might well be Sinatra's best work. It climaxes in "One For My Baby",an absolute masterpiece.
Tony Bennett did a nasty little number called "I Want To Be Around".

I'll also add Letter to Hermione by David Bowie.

Love Spit Love. Both albums.

Atmosphere - "Fuck You Lucy"

She say that she still wants a friendship
She can't live her life without me as a friend
I can't figure out why I give a damn to what she wants
I don't understand the now before the then
Most of this garbage I write that these people seem to like
Is about you and how I let you infect my life
And if they got to know you, I doubt that they would see it
They'd wonder what I showed you how you could leave it
A friend in Chicago said that I should stay persistent
If I stay around I'm bound to break resistance
Fuck you Lucy for defining my existence
Fuck you and your differences
Ever since I was a young lad with a part-time dad
It was hard to find happiness inside of what I had
I studied my mother, I digested her pain
And vowed no women on my path would have to walk the same
Travel like sound across the fate ladder
I travel with spoon to mix this cake batter
And I travel with feels so I can deal with touch
It's like that, thank you very much, fuck you very much!

(Yes, yes it is)
And everyone in his life would mistake it as love

Fuck the what happened, I got stuck
They can peel pieces of me off the grill of her truck
Used to walk with luck, used to hold her hand
Fell behind the and played the role of a slower man
I want to stand on top of this mountain and yell
I want to wake up and break up this lake of hell
I feel like a bitch for letting the she twist me up
The last starfighter was wounded, time to give it up
On a pick it up mission, kept it bitter

Gettin' in a million memories just to forget her
The difficulty in keepin' emotions controlled
Cookies for the road, took me by the soul
Hunger for the drama, hunger for the nurture
Gonna take it further, the hurt feels like murder
Interpret the eyes, read the lines on her face
The sunshine is fake, how much time did I waste?
Fuck you Lucy for leaving me
Fuck you Lucy for not needing me
I wanna say fuck you because I still love you
No, I'm not okay, and I don't know what to do

(Yes, yes it is)
And everyone in his life would mistake it as love

Do I sound mad? Well I guess I'm a little pissed
Every action has a point, five points make a fist
You close em', you swing em', it's hurts when it hits
And the truth can be a bitch, but if the boot fits
I got an idea: You should get a tattoo that says warning
That's all, just a warning, so the potential victim can take a left
And save breath, and avoid you, sober and upset in the morning
I wanna scream, "Fuck you Lucy!"
But the problem is I love you Lucy
So instead I'ma finish my drink and have another
Well you think about how you used to be my lover

(Yes, yes it is)
And everyone in his life would mistake it as love

The Mountain Goats - No Children

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wRP6egIEABk

Quote:
I hope that our few remaining friends
Give up on trying to save us
I hope we come out with a fail-safe plot
To piss off the dumb few that forgave us

I hope the fences we mended
Fall down beneath their own weight
And I hope we hang on past the last exit
I hope it's already too late

And I hope the junkyard a few blocks from here
Someday burns down
And I hope the rising black smoke carries me far away
And I never come back to this town again in my life

I hope I lie
And tell everyone you were a good wife
And I hope you die
I hope we both die

I hope I cut myself shaving tomorrow
I hope it bleeds all day long
Our friends say it's darkest before the sun rises
We're pretty sure they're all wrong

I hope it stays dark forever
I hope the worst isn't over
And I hope you blink before I do
And I hope I never get sober

And I hope when you think of me years down the line
You can't find one good thing to say
And I'd hope that if I found the strength to walk out
You'd stay the hell out of my way

I am drowning
There is no sign of land
You are coming down with me
Hand in unlovable hand

And I hope you die
I hope we both die
ALthough I guess that's more about a couple that should break up but can't

Nice Justin.

I know you'll be a star in somebody else's sky,
But why can't it be mine?

Hahaha. Nice one.

I'll second that with Tool - "Ticks and Leeches" if you're feeling particularly angry about being dicked over. While the song probably isn't about a breakup with a girl, it certainly fits the mood when you're pissed about the breakup. Scream along for added relief (though, this comes at a great price to your voicebox).

Bump! Here's a good article from Bitch Magazine by Thao Nguyen of Thao and the Get Down Stay Down. GET THEIR NEW ALBUM, IT'S PRETTY FUCKING AWESOME. It's also pretty much an upbeat break-up album.

Quote:
No one pays attention to breakup songs until they need them. When you first hear one you are probably not interested; you are probably turned off by its utter depression, and so you skip ahead to the next upbeat track, something with shouting and hand claps in the chorus, something for happier people.

Fortunately for you, the dirge you just flitted by is secreted away and catalogued in the depths of your mind's ear for your future employ. Months, years, possibly hours later, the shit goes down, and you are so sad. And you’re searching, searching. You’re pretty sure the only thing that will make you feel better is listening to something that makes you feel…sadder.

Why does one crave the wallow? I do not know. But one does. You want full immersion in the dissolution. You don’t want to just take the language courses. You want to go live in the country of origin; you want to stay with a host family.

Enter the breakup song to function as a vessel, a vehicle, a holding pen. It is the sauna where all your emotions gather after work and sit and talk shit or breathe deeply and with each action make themselves hotter and sweatier until there is such frenzied perspiration you are crying on the outside, probably alone in your car. The breakup song serves a very specific role in the triage of heartbreak. I’m not saying it’s healthy to delve and wallow—but I am saying everyone I know does it, so let us honor the sad, slow breakup song for the fucked-up and necessary friend it is.

"Happy" By The Wrens:
Quote:
you're the one I want
you're a chance to take
you're a heartbreak
and swore you'd never leave again
you're the only one
that i ever trusted
or who ever cared at all
is this how it's going to be?
is this how you wanted me
broken down again
it's almost over now
is this why you wanted me
to watch as you walk away
you kept on killing me
you don't even want to touch me
you don't even want to touch me
i was wrong
i've wasted on
can't figure out
what happened to us
i won't count
on you anymore
i'll be alright
don't worry about me
aren't you happy now
got what you want
i wanted you
but i'm over that now
i'm over it
i'm so sick of you
what we went through
your lies to me
won't win again
so don't kid yourself
it's better this way
it's all back to me
And, My personal opinion the best break up lyrics, ever, "Ex-Girl Collection" By The Wrens:
Quote:
4 Fourth floor room / each girl I've brought back home to bloom
All fold on close inspection
Each one leaves / a banner hanging from the eaves
Marking the eve of election.
Ex-girl collection, why?
Into why not
Into what else you got?
It's just how men mark time.
Ann slams in / another lightning round begins
This could get interesting
Where's Ann been? / She pours herself a don't-ask gin
No ice and light on the bitters / I'm done with quitters
'Why / Charles i found out / wipe that smile off your mouth
I think it's tell-me time...'
Britt hit hard / She found my box of Beth's best cards
Hand cut and signed with 'X's
Called at work / 'Happy anniversary, jerk'
And I just laughed at the timing
With you on line two still crying / 'Why
Play sex on the cuff / does Beth like it rough
And learn your dirty lines?
And keep her hair cropped / (the other shoe dropped)
Is this how men mark time in couples?'
She cursed, / (this sounds so rehearsed)
As Ann, hand on hip, accusing me to the rafters
The words turn and spit and scratch right through to the plaster
I'm called ten kinds of a bastard / curses come faster / Why
Into why not
Into what else you got?
Into Charles gone to pot / in hotter water
Line up to lift up a toast / to the ones I hurt most
And how the well's gone lime
With Charles on the plow
I'm roger over and how.
Slower now men mark time
Fine. / Why? / what else you got?

If You See Her, Say Hello by Bob Dylan. Like David Duchovny said in Californication, Blood on the Tracks is the perfect break-up album.

"It's Coming Down" by Cake. Not their best song compositionally, but it worked when I needed it.

I also second everything on Justin's list. Bravo.

Jake, good call on Thao. "Fixed It" is like the perfect happy break-up song.

And Chris, those Wren songs are right on the money.
