The Magnetic Fields, Book Of Love. Avoid the Peter Gabriel version. While great, he also makes it sincere. For a break up you want the sarcastic, bitter original.

Another wonderful version: Mike Doughty's version on the album "Golden Delicious."

No idea if it's sincere or not.

I always preferred orchestral pieces as opposed to songs with lyrics, and with that in mind, after my divorce, I listened a lot to Mahler's Fifth Symphony, most notably, the Adagietto... or 4th Movement.

There is something horribly soul-crushing, yet strangely uplifting about it.

If you want a whole album of songs about love affairs gone bad, Old Blue Eyes did a theme album called "Only The Lonely" which might well be Sinatra's best work. It climaxes in "One For My Baby",an absolute masterpiece.
Tony Bennett did a nasty little number called "I Want To Be Around".

I'll second that with Tool - "Ticks and Leeches" if you're feeling particularly angry about being dicked over. While the song probably isn't about a breakup with a girl, it certainly fits the mood when you're pissed about the breakup. Scream along for added relief (though, this comes at a great price to your voicebox).

Bump! Here's a good article from Bitch Magazine by Thao Nguyen of Thao and the Get Down Stay Down. GET THEIR NEW ALBUM, IT'S PRETTY FUCKING AWESOME. It's also pretty much an upbeat break-up album.
