Battlefield 1943

Despite the PS3 voice chat problem and fucked matchmaking, the 360 server issues, the glitchy engine. The lag. Overpowered sniper rifles. Underpowered regular rifles. Silly reduced splash damage on tanks. Lack of tankbuster class. Inability to select which map to play. Lack of rewards for ranking up.

Despite all that, once that tune starts playing...

Man it's good.
I haven't played a ton, but I feel it's way more fun than Bad Company. Is the basic game open to new downloadable maps? Or is this it?

I suspect that we'll see a handful more maps with a pacific theme, but this could well just be a gesture - they did a 1942 pack for Battlefield Vietnam ages ago and that was glorious - but never expanded upon.

Agreed. It's so nice getting back into the BF1943 world. I hope that they tweak and make additions to make this version even better, because a lot of the problems you pointed out still persist. The inability to quickly join a room with friends and the team-switching once you do get in with a group of friends are the worst issues for me.

Even so, it's a blast and highly addictive (again).

I get disconnected from the servers every 5 minutes on a regular basis. Bullshit. Not my internet connection or my ps3, so I'm gonna wait till they release a patch before I get back into it.
Really enjoying this on the 360, played all the other Battlefields on PC back in the day, and yeah, once that music kicked in it was like being home.
Other than some sketchy hit detection(flew a plane ten feet over trees and blew up/missing obvious shot hits), and people "floating" down hills while running, this game is a blast. It's like... for 15 bucks you get the 4(or 3 PS3) maps that would always pop up anyway in some $60 Battlefield game.

I've not had any disconnect problems - i've had it freeze once or twice though. It might require some unusual ports or something to be opened in your router?

I haven't had this problem either. I played it for a few hours last night and was getting a kick out of. A lot of fun.

So what's new for a Battlefield fanatic like me?

The airstrikes appear to be a new development? Guiding in 3 bombers through a semi-guided bit before dropping the bombs. It replaces the actual bombers from the original though.

The Frostbite Engine does allow some rather amusing destruction - Trees and and buildings will demolish on a fairly limited scale but it becomes part of the environment quite quickly (which is unusual, since it was the main appeal of BC). Of course, if you've played Bad Company you've already played with this engine.

It's as buggy as 1942 was on launch, which may bring back some warm and fuzzy memories!

Even the intro tune is a rehash. A gloriously rousing rehash, mind. Not like BC's shitty take on the signature track. You probably shouldn't buy it expecting anything new.
Cool. It does annoy me that you can't control the bombers. I'm not usually one to cry nerfed, but making the bombers automated removes certain aspects of my game I would prefer to keep.

They're a semi-automated wing of 3. You steer them and control the bomb drop, but have no control over height or speed.

It's for good reason, the game's been stripped back to basics - Adding the bombers to these maps would have been too tough considering the space requirements and how easy it is to kill regular fighters with AA - a bomber would get ruined.

I'm more bothered by the lack of the 2-seater fighters.

Nobody seems to pay attention to the scout class's dynamite sticks. You can leave them anywhere you like and people will run right over them like they were power ups. I had a pretty good time playing on a friends Xbox seeing all the places we could drop them to rack up kills. My favorite was sticking them to the sides of fighter planes and hiding in a watchtower. You can detonate them at any range, oddly enough, so when someone on the other team jumps in a plane and takes off you can get a very satisfying kill.

Or you can just act like a Demoman and drop all three around one of your flags. That tactic works so well you'd swear you were playing with bots. Oh, Xbox Live!

Those dynamite sticks are insanely useful. 1943 is a tremendous value.

Ok, so I tried this again on the weekend and got booted, again. Killzone 2, bomberman ultra and Crash commando work perfectly online, not a single disconnect issue, but this is game seems to have real issues with my internet connection, which fucking sucks because no other game in my expansive Ps3 online library has these bizarre twitchy problems. Will do some research online and see if my router is indeed the problem. Thanks for the tip, dan. Good thing I didn't pay for the game or this would really really piss me off.

Ohh this is news. Did you gameshare it with a friend like you did with a few other titles? It never occurred to me that you could share this or i'd have nicked it off my brother. I'd have thought they would have locked this thing down like with a few other major titles. Nicely done.

Oddly though, I don't feel bad having paid for it. It's impossible how easy it is to drop into a game and just play.
Am I the only one playing this right now on the PSN? I have been hooked on this the last few nights, losing needed sleep and time for working. I just seem to be digging it.

Are these things limited to servers based in your country of origin?

I've been playing the shit out of this, but not seen any Chewers.

Yep it works for pretty much every game I've come across on PSN. My brother, cousin and myself take turns buying games and share them. most psn titles allow 5 downloads by default. This has worked on bigger titles such as Burnout Paradise and WipeoutHD. Its as simple as logging onto another ps3 with your psn id.

And I fixed the battefield disconnection problem. Seems like heaps of people are complaining about it on the net. Tried various solutions, none worked, then a friend suggested to setup my ps3 as a DMZ on my router. I then played the longest session of 1943 yet (over 5 minutes) without getting disconnected.
Its interesting to note that the only other game people have had major disconnection/router problems with is Fight night 4. Another EA game. Piss poor.

Dan & electrichead, my psn id is Jigga420 if you aren't on my friends list already. I'll be playing the game a hell of alot more now that it fucking works properly.
This thing is coming out only in September on PC. Fuck.

I'm electrichead72 if you guys see me on there. I'll probably be on this weekend again, usually at night.

You can buy it already. It's called Battlefield 1942. About a tenth of the price and with loads more maps and classes. Who needs destructable buildings?
Less classes?

I thought it was like the 1st but updated with the Bf2 engine. What the hell?
There are only three classes available. I could maybe do with one more, but I'd rather have the ability to lay prone for the scout/sniper class. I can hide in the brush of Iwo Jima or Guadalcanal and rain death. I think that Bad Company has five classes with a lot more gun options. For $15 for a game that is lots of fun, I can't complain too much.

I can't fly a plane worth a shit. A guaranteed -10 pts every time I get in one.

I've gotten pretty good at flying and taking down planes(including bombers), but I've yet to kill a single person on the ground. I just can't judge where my bombs are going, at all.

Considering how easy it is to take out planes with the anti-aircraft guns, I'm not really sure why people bother with them. Every time I hop in one of those suckers I take out planes like a madman.
Yeah, I'm good on the AA guns. I can usually bag a few plans. Until the snipers find me anyway.
So I've been playing this game a lot more now that I don't get booted off the servers every five minutes. Getting good at it too, as I usually end up placed in the top 5 in every round. That is if I'm using the machine gun Class.

The sniper class is another matter all together. People are complaining about the rifle being over powered, but that's if you can hit anything with it and even if you can, I'm not fully convinced its always an one hit kill. I'm sure I've shot people once and they haven't died, only to get a "kill assist" Xp bonus two seconds later when someone else guns the person down.

As far as flying planes goes, I'm ok at it, don't crash too often but I've only managed to kill 2 people by dropping bombs. Btw, Does anyone know how to call the bombers?
There's a little concrete "hut"(I don't know exactly what it's called) you have to run into for the bombing runs.
Is that to activate the bombers in your name so they rain unholy amounts of destruction on your foes or is the hut a place to seek refuge from the bombs themselves?

And going back to the sniper class, finding a good sniping spot in this game without being detected by another asshole sniper is the shit.
It's to activate them. I have only used them a couple times, but I assume there is (at least)one on every map.

This game needs prone position, bad.
I'm trying SO HARD not to download and play the shit out of this.
It's fun, but super flawed. The price and the ease of just jumping into a game to fuck around makes it pretty easy to overlook those flaws.

RE: the bombers. Watch the text on the loading screens for each map, it'll tell you where the bombing run bunkers are located. When your team has control of the point where the bunker is, you run to the door of the bunker and press b to enter if air support is "charged." On the minimap, it will show a small "cluster of bombers" icon over the bunker when the bombing run is available.

You get to control the bombers then. They turn like trucks, so try to line up your target early. Press the D pad to get a bombardier view to fine tune your approach. When you near your target, make sure to switch to bombardier view, wait for the aiming reticke to center on your target, then pull the right trigger.

50% of the time, when the game dumps you back to the bunker, the other team will be waiting to kill you, so start firing immediately and you might get lucky.
I didn't realize the "Air Superiority" stage was ever unlocking on the PS3. Pleasant surprise, especially in a loaded game.
I'm at about 50/50 for getting 1-hit kills with the sniper/scout dude. He is also pretty useful if you can sneak up on a tank. If you can find a decent spot, you can get some great kills.

I bounced over to Battlefield:Bad Company to give that a spin again. I forgot that teammates can kill each other, so of course I ended up on a team with a couple of assholes who wanted nothing better to do than to run around killing their own teammates. That kinda bugged the shit out of me.

Repair, anti-tank etc have been smerged into the other classes. It's a wise move.

Planes decimate landing craft on the intial minute of most games. They're also excellent for removing other aircraft (far more than boring AA guns). I can ruin people in them, and fly under AA fire.
Fine. I'm in.
Can anyone tell me how to open that damn parachute? I keep jumping out of that damn plan trying to get the trophy but I push all the buttons to no avail. -10 points.
Push O to exit the plane, then push X to open the parachute. Took me a while to get this trophy as well. I pushed X almost immediately after pressing O.
Thanks, I'll give it a try.
Just one tap will do it, it's not like you have to hold the button or anything.

It's nice the menus that show the controls don't even mention how to use your parachute. Trial and error cost me a good 5-10 lives. Thanks EA!
Score! One last trophy to get, so I just need to get to 130 or whatever matches.

You guys have all the stamps and postcards already? I just got the 50 kills as a sniper last night too.

I just hammer the x button until it deploys. It allows for parachuting out of towers and off mountains for hilarious times all round.
I'm having a ton of fun with this for such a quicky game.
My new strategy is to pull up(straight up) off a carrier in a plane, and keep going with it until I flip, then roll over, and drop out high over a flag and deploy parachute when I'm like 20 feet from the ground.

I get 30 points left and right, and maybe a few kills while I'm in my brief slow-fall.
Thread Starter
Yep. I hate people like you who use the planes as just rapid flag-captures. I've seen people jump out of planes only a few feet from the ground, the plane carving up my helpless form and exploding gloriously as I watch the respawn screen and your filthy face laughing, standing unharmed as you capture the flag.

Lowest form of scum. Except the sniper glitchers.
Hahahahaha. Snipers are way worse, even in their non-glitch forms. I haven't seen any glitchers yet, actually. They became rampant in Battlefield 2 though.

I never drop out right over a flag though, that would ruin the thrill of falling a ludicrous distance.
surprise surprise! this was delayed for the PC...
