That's good to know, and excellent coverage. I'm pretty excited to play this game even though I've cooled off on Rock Band. Having a career mode and some genuinely interesting things to unlock will actually drive me to do more than just quicklplay through a few songs and quit.

Completely agreed. I don't play Rock Band nearly as much as I used to- about the only time I do anymore is when I stop by the bar, when everyone used to come over my house to play it for hours on end. But I have the feeling the parties are going to start up again as soon as this game is released. It's going to be fun to try and five-star every song in the game.

Crap, and I just realized I didn't talk about the animations created for each location which were done by MK12, the design firm behind the last few Bond film intros who did that amazing opening cinematic for TBRB. Each one is in a different style and pretty stunning.

Great article today. I LOVE the Christmas records! I have old tapes off the radio somewhere, but really looking forward to hearing that again.

ETA: "Hey Bulldog"???

Holy Christ, if my Xbox isn't back from the service center by 9.9 I'm going to kill someone. Great article, Alex. I hate you.

It's been a long, long time since I've felt this way about a game release, but it feels like time is actually slowing down in the countdown to this thing. Come on already, time.

Anyone have the fog/light machine for Rock Band? I understand it takes up a control slot ... is there any way to get a bassist, lead guitar, singer, and drummer along with the fog/light machine? Or is capped at four users?

It must be how the Madden losers feel.

There's a story about sports nerds lining up for the Madden release on the news right now.

If you have wireless controllers, sure. And don't you have the usb hub that came with Rock Band for 360? That allows for six wired controllers right there provided you don't use the wireless adapter (four for the hub, the other on the front and one in back.)

Oh hey and any New Yorkers- we might be hosting a Beatles Rock Band night at Hell Gate on release date. Going to be a blast, I'll definitely get the details up as they get more solid.

Maybe this is already established, but it looks as though all the DLC (at least from about Revolver on) is going to feature its own unique animation (rather than just synching the existing venues/avatars to the tunes, as is currently the case). Wonder if they're going to take up more HDD space.

I normally wouldn't worry about that, but if the game continues to hold my interest, I sort of imagine that I'll be downloading everything as it becomes available.
Speaking of which, that comment just made it hit home how bad I need a 60GB hard drive before that DLC starts coming.

Yep.

I'm predicting trouble with Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds right now. Shit is bright.
I still think that front-loading so many of the best guitar riffs might eventually make the DLC feel slighter (I'd have saved stuff like "And Your Bird Can Sing" for later). But I suppose it's more important to hit right out of the box.

Speaking of which - and this may full-well be a dumb question (and a temporary thread derailment) - but can you use any USB external hard drive as a storage device, or does it need to be an Official "XBOX360 Hard Drive?"

I believe there are dangerous, unspeakable ways around it if one is so inclined, but the short answer is "No, only the egregiously overpriced official hard drives." And the 60GB HDD doesn't come with a transfer cable.

I'm voting for In My Life for 45th song, but only because Let it Be lacks the requisite orchestration.
Seems if they're going to hold back one song as a surprise, it needs to stand out in some way, even within the context of the Beatles catalog.

I wonder if it's something that's basically unplayable in full band mode: "A Day in the Life," "Eleanor Rigby," "Yesterday": a song that few people would download on its own (at least from a gaming point of view), but which makes an acceptable "bonus" to the complete package.
Rumor is the 45th song is "The End" due to a lyric from it being used in the title of the Achievement you get for completing the Story Mode. I could totally see an awesome Dreamscape being used for that song as well.

Now I don't feel so bad that my drumming sucks...

Ringo Starr's Rock Band struggle
(UKPA) – 1 day ago

Beatles legend Ringo Starr has admitted he may struggle to even play his own parts when the Fab Four version of Rock Band is released next month.

The drummer reckons he is barely able to play along with the computer game because he cannot concentrate on the on-screen cues.

Starr, 69, told the New York Times he had tried to play Rock Band only once: "It's impossible. I cannot watch the line going down and play at the same time."
The only thing that would make this better is if there were some unlockable Rutles songs hidden somewhere.

Dates on the album DLC. Also promises what I was hoping for: ability to play the Abbey Road medley continuously.
You know, as much as I don't really see me and my buddies playing nothing but Beatles songs until we have to switch discs, the presentation and the love and care that is going into this game is going to make even the Beatles haters crack a smile or two. I can actually see a lot of Beatles nights at my house this fall. Fuck it, I'm picking this one up on day one.

Amazon has a bundle available for a buck forty that comes with the regular ol' Rock Band instruments.
I saw that bundle. After discussing it with my cousin who is also a Beatlemaniac like myself and my father, I've decided to go for broke and get the limited edition. There's a K-Mart nearby (I used to work there last year) and they still do layaway, so I'm going to put one on layaway there and just pay it off rather than blow the whole wad at once.
Thread Starter
Don't forget that it only comes with the Hofner- if you don't have any other instruments you'll need another guitar. The bundle makes sense rather than picking them up separately though I guess, since they're priced at a friggin' 100 bucks each.

On Facebook they've got a little poll going up asking people to guess what the last song is. These are the choices.

A. Hey Jude B. Yesterday C. Flying D. Help!

My money's on Help. Wish I remembered if any of those were there when I played it!

Edit- The more I think about it, the more it has to be. Hey Jude is all piano driven, Yesterday is too sad and has no drums, and Flying's instrumental! It's gotta be Help.
Help would be my vote as well. Its omission from the main list is suspicious.
Of the four mentioned, I'd go with "Yesterday"; as I posted upthread, it would be a good way to toss in a song that's really not going to be very playable, without asking people to pay extra for it.

Its funny, my cousin said the exact same thing. I really hope its Help! as well.
The Beatles Rock Band had better come with either:
1) Help!
or
B) someone to break the news to my 9 year old that Help! isn't (yet) available, 'cause she is gonna be fucking pissed.

I vividly remember my daughter discovering The Beatles-- I think she was about 7 or 8.

We had come home from somewhere, and I turned on the TV to check something I had recorded while we were out. The TV was tuned to the local PBS station, who had just started showing A Hard Day's Night. My daughter was enthralled, watched it the rest of the way, and has never looked back: now in college, she's got her copy of Beatles RB reserved, and is planning a Bealtes RB party at my sister's house on September 9th.
Does the $250 set come with cymbals for the drums? I saw a kit that had 3 cymbals on it, but haven't read that the $250 set comes with them.

I don't want to sound ungrateful, because I'm gonna play this game until I die from awesomeness, but why in the hell would you buy that $250 kit, if all it comes with is what's listed above?
Basically because they're replicas of the actual instruments. I personally don't care that much (though I am slightly tempted), but people who are really into their toys probably really want those things.

Oh, believe me, I'd LOVE to have a full set of the replica instruments. I think they are the bee's knees and wish I had $500 to spend on this game.

However, it's a pretty disappointing $250 set if the drums are so plain.

My Beatles RB- obsessed sister just called and threatened me with bodily injury if I don't meet her at Best Buy for the hands-on demo today.

If it's remotely interesting, I'll report back later.

EDIT: Looks like the Bay Area got screwed: none of the stores hereabout got the demo. Oh, well.

The one over here in Mount Vernon didn't have it either. Someone screwed the mop-headed pooch on this.

Trejo- you're welcome!
I guess some stores got it, and postings I've seen here and there seem to indicate that, while the "demo event" was for today only, that some stores still have the demo to play (I also read one post that said that a Blockbuster store-- not sure where-- had the demo as early as Friday night, and others saying that Gamestops have it, too).

ETA: Been reading up on people's experiences with this. Appearance of the demo was sporadic: some stores had it early, many never got it at all, sometimes in the same city.

And while some people said it looked and played great, the majority of comments I have seen posted suggest that Best Buy did little or nothing to make it much of an "event," even in those stores with "hosted" demos (and the "hosts" don't appear to have known very much about the game).

This post is pretty representative of what I've been seeing:

Quote:
Best Buy in Independence Blvd. in Virginia Beach, VA. No fanfare, nothing on the door about the event.

Two crappy guitars; both had straps but they kept popping off. The one I used -- maybe both -- would only upstrum ... confused everyone that I saw try to use it.

Guitars were plugged in "backwards" such that Player 1 was standing in front of Player 3's onscreen notes, and vice versa. This also confused everyone that I saw try to use it.

I asked an employee about the microphone problem and he helpfully told me I needed to push the green button. When I told him I'd already tried that, he complained that he would have to tear down the entire display to fix it. (I told him when he did that, he should also swap the two guitars.)

Drums had the yellow and red pads missing. I found them on the floor and re-seated them on the drums. Midway through the song they popped off.

Microphone was plugged in but would not register with the game.

If Harmonix had some kind of deal with Best Buy to promote the game, then I'd have to say Best Buy owes them some reparations. This demo experience was PATHETIC, and probably did not convince anyone to buy the game who was not already planning to do so.

Question for Alex:

How beautiful are the backgrounds during songs and do they make it difficult to read the note charts?
Thread Starter
Much like with Rock Band, I hardly noticed them as I was playing. They're not distracting. But watching someone else play is way more entertaining than RB.
If anything, the Star Power bar blends in a little too well with the note catching grid at the bottom, which caused some minor troubles. And I've actually gotten rather adept at watching the background and the note charts without skipping a beat, and even I kinda got sidetracked during Here Comes The Sun.

I love the advisory for "mild lyrics." Nothing more dangerous than kids getting laid-back!
