Focus, foooocussss...

I was curious: what techniques do you guys use to stay focused on a task or project? Do some of you come by good focus skills naturally? Did any of you go through a period where you couldn't focus on anything and then through training or self-realization you were able to improve this ability? Have any of you resorted to medication to help out with focus issues?

The reason I am asking is that it's something that I struggle with quite a bit. There are times when I am able to focus moderately well and get things done, but most of the time I can't stay focused on anything past an hour at a time. I think I could be way happier in life if I could figure out a solution to my situation. And yes, this is a relatively new realization for me. I used to think it was cool because it let me expose myself to a hundred different ideas in a day and learn all kinds of random awesomeness. But now my poor focusing abilities are just getting in the way. I am in a very serious important job now, with multiple demands and a packed schedule and I could see a year down the road being completely overwhelmed by half-finished projects and not being able to stay on task you know?

You realize most of the people who post here are supposed to be working?

A serious answer to your question: Exercise.

I started a rather serious workout regimen about a year or so ago. I've found that I've been able to get more quality sleep because of my workout routine, which has in turn helped me to face each day with more energy and more focus.

Yes, the irony does not escape me. I figured I knew I had time this morning to post a bit, so if people don't reply until after they are done work no big deal :P

QFT. For me is hard to keep it since there's the smog outside and I am a messy cooker...
Some workout before going to sleep guarantee good sleep and some pain when you wake up, but it's great.
Lately I found listening to music is perfect since it let me realize I am not spending too much time onto something (something that really worries me lately).

I just drink until I'm ready. Also, I have discipline. Learn it young or spend the rest of your life trying to obtain it.

Ever since I was a kid, I've been able to tune everything around me out when I'm working on something (to the chagrin of my co-workers on occasion). Also, back in high school, I was in AFJROTC, and learned about discipline, time management, focusing, and setting up ordered routines.

I was in the Navy for 11 years, and what I found with the discipline I learned there is that it pretty much only worked when you were in that environment. It was so easy to do only what you needed to do, because your life had infinitely more structure and focus day-to-day. By default, our schedules were very regimented, and that made everything way clearer and easier for me. And I was a musician to boot; it''s not like I had the roughest military experience, yet even doing that job I found it so much easier to focus on what I was doing (becoming a better musician, memorizing music for performances, etc., etc.) Once I got out, I found staying in the music scene doing brass quintet and whatnot would help, but that didn't go on for too long.

I exercise 5 days out of seven, usually running but sometimes steep incline walks. I also take Tae Kwon Do 2 nights a week. I am the mighty rank of YELLOW BELT (FEAR ME!!!). My fitness level is really good now. I went though a phase two years ago where I decided I had had enough of being overweight and I figured out a good system for me to lose and then maintain a healthy weight. 60 pounds lost later, and I can actually run n' punch people n' stuff. I find that while I am exercising or learning TKD I can focus and be in the moment no problems. Afterwards not so much. The bulk of my exercise is done during the work day (1.5 hour lunch + free college gym membership) and in the evenings. I've heard it's not great to work out later in the day, do any of you know anything about that or is that just a schoolyard rumour?

In any case, I am thinking I may have to go the chemical route. I can't think of anything else I could be doing to help myself out.

Dom: You choke the chicken before any big date, don't you? Tell me you spank the monkey before any big date. Oh my God, he doesn't flog the dolphin before a big date. Are you crazy? That's like going out there with a loaded gun! Of course that's why you're nervous. Oh my dear friend, please sit, please. Look, um, after you've had sex with a girl, and you're lying in bed with her, are you nervous? No, you're not, why?

Ted: Cause I'm tired...

Dom: Wrong! It's 'cause you ain't got the baby batter on the brain anymore! Jesus, that stuff will fuck you're head up! Look, the most honest moment in a man's life are the few minutes after he's blown his load - now that is a medical fact. And the reason for it is that you're no longer trying to get laid, you're actually... you're thinking like a girl, and girls love that.

Kudos to you on the fitness upgrade! My wife and I usually hit our gym after work (only time we can do it consistently), but we do find a slight energy boost on Saturday mornings when we go (great time to go as the free weight area is vacant and we wind up hefting chrome with the senior citizens).

I'd check with your doctor re: the chemical route. It sounds to me you might have an imbalance or something, as you seem to be on your game when your more physical, and likely shooting endorphins, etc. through your brain during workouts.

As for the discipline, I was able to set up routines and procedures back in high school that were tremendous helps for me even today. Getting overwhelmed with lots of projects still happens (shit, I almost had a bad breakdown a few weeks back due to overwork), but I'm finding if I get the smaller shit out of the way first, it frees me up to tackle the bigger projects, and even then it's important to take each project one at a time. Anybody give you shit about that, you tell 'em to wait. A good friend of mine at my last job had the "the job gets done when it gets done" attitude, and he was the most focused and laid back dude I ever worked with.

Good luck, Ludwig!
