Shadow Complex

Couldn't find a thread for this already. Anyways I love me some metroidvania and this game looks phenomenal in action.

Figure I'll give this one last bump since it drop on 8/19. Reviews from kotaku and IGN both claim it raises the bar for XBLA titles. Super stoked for this.
Looks like a ton of fun, but just have too many other games stacked up around the house. I'll probably wait for this to hit the $10 mark and jump on it.
While the Trials HD demo was a lot of fun, I didn't feel like spending $15 on it. Shadow Complex looks to be more up my alley, and I'll probably buy it soon after playing the demo version later this week. I can't wait to try it out!
Downloading it now! Let you guys know what I think when I can.

Big sucker too, btw. 835 megs.
Still thinking about getting this whether or not you think it sucks, Alex, because I'm a rebel. Also the reviews and WOM so far are pretty favorable save for weird depth issues with the 3-D backgrounds and side-scrolling not syncing up in some places.
Buying a points card for this game. If they boxed this sucker up and sold it for $19.99 at retail stores people would still buy it. A lot of hype for this title.

And I hear its based on one of Orson "hates fags" Scott Card's novels.

Good decision. This game is fucking awesome.
Giant Bomb gave it some 5 star lovin', too. I have my 1200 points ready to go Wednesday morning.

Right, isn't this based off of a series of books he wrote that are about an all-out war between Democrats and Republicans? That's just precious.
If this game lets me kill Glenn Beck clones, I'll play it while furiously jerking off.
According to the Help section in the game it also serves as a companion to his upcoming novel, and it parallels the events of his novel Empire.

Good thing that the story's the worst (and most easily ignored!) part of this game.

Regardless of whatever else he's written, I will always like OSC for writing Ender's Game. I love that book.
Ender's Game sorta sucks.

I really want to play this, the reviews have been killer for it, and I love the Metroid style of gameplay to death. I will even tangentially support Orson Scott Card for that.

It's glorified young adult sci-fi. I own a copy and have read it multiple times in an attempt to get what's so great about it, and it hasn't clicked yet in the few years I've owned it. Plus Card is a fucking asshole.
Yup. It's a kid's book, basically. Try to read it past the age of 14, and chances are you won't get the appeal.

Glad you're so into it though, guy.

I read it for the first time fairly recently, and it is definitely way more YA in its style than I had assumed. The entire book is just kind of.. uncomfortable.

I'm not entirely sure what it's original appeal was, really, because the most impressive part to me was Card's prescience regarding post-milennial internet culture and video games. I know there were bulletin boards in the 80s but Card basically has people instant messenging, blogging about political issues under pseudonyms, and playing MMOs. He's nothing if not an accurate futurist.

Er, back on topic, game looks great!

Yeah, but being an asshole hardly precludes one from writing well. Devin's a huge asshole, and he writes quite well!

That said, I had little use for card even as a kid, and I suspect this game is going to have even less story than the average Epic game, so it's all moot.
I think this game looks awesome, but being laid off I'm not sure if I can justify the purchase. I think I may have to wait until bargain time to get it. Which sucks, as I'm jonseing for a new Metroidvania style game.

Harlan Ellison! But yeah, it just seems like Card's way overrated based off of Ender's Game (and its sequels, which seem like a textbook example of diminishing returns from what I've heard about hte,).
So I think I'm almost done (7 hours in with 96% of the map complete, and 87% of the items so far) and while it's a really damn fun game, there is absolutely nothing in it that hasn't been done before. Even the weapons are direct lifts from Metroid. The "foam gun" that you use to freeze enemies and turn them into temporary platforms, for example.

Not sure you all shouldn't just play Super Metroid again. Sure is pretty, though.

I'm sure nostalgia plays a part in why I like the book so much. I was probably about 10-12 when I first read it, but I still enjoy reading it every once in a while. The three direct sequels are a lot less YA in their style, and they progressively get more philosophical as they go. I dig them, but a lot of people don't, so that's probably why he went back to do the "Shadow" spin-off novels that are much more similar in tone and style to Ender's Game.

Anyway, sorry to derail the thread here. I can't wait to try out Shadow Complex, regardless of how light it is on story.

Yeah but I've got Super Metroid memorized by now. How's the difficulty? Bosses?
I'm playing on the hard difficulty and it's a breeze. Only got killed by one boss so far, and that was because I was messing around. It's really, really easy, actually.
So Alex, say you were laid off and only had limited money to spend. Would you go with this or 'Splosion Man? Which will give me more value for the gaming buck (or MSPoint, as it were)?

I just wanted to comment and say that I just realized that all XBLA games show up on Amazon.com now (so you can just buy a voucher code for download). So if you want, you no longer have to deal with MS points but can instead purchase things in human dollars.

Consider these links to Splosion Man or Trials HD. Plus, I'd imagine if we can get CHUD links, you could buy games from them and they'd get some money from it.

'Splosion Man. Goddammit, get 'Splosion Man.
My friend is raving about Splosion Man. Not just single player either but that the co-op is great too.
'Splosion Man is really good.
In case you can't tell already from my avatar, I really like 'Splosion Man.
Yeah, get 'Splosion Man. This game's very solid, but it ain't the second coming like most sites are making it out to be.
The launch trailer for Shadow Complex that just came out is pretty bad-ass!
10 hours for 100% completion, another hour to beat all the challenge levels, and I think I'm done for now. Ranked #3 on the campaign leaderboards! That won't last long...

Very good game that does absolutely nothing new. Full review tomorrow!
I downloaded the Shadow Complex demo this morning before work and played it for about ten minutes or so. I definitely liked what I saw, so it is highly likely that I will buy the full version tonight after I finish the trial.
Going to wait and see what the response to this game is. I love me some Metroidvania, but I really want to have the time to enjoy this. I just started up Bioshock again.

This whole "summer of arcade" event has ended up being pretty damn great if you ask me.
I wouldn't have taken the jab at Scott Card if they didn't take the time to promote his books in the game, but they did, so I was compelled...

But yeah, just like last year Summer of Arcade's been great. I wish they'd release some more AAA games the rest of the year too, though.
I'm tempted to grab it after the review, but I didn't realize Super Metroid is on the virtual console. I haven't turned on my Wii in...shit 9 months now? I might just have to get that first.
The main character kinda looks like Norm Macdonald, only more alert.

It's also Orson Scott Card. Fuck him.

If anyone is out of points and wants to pick up Shadow Complex, you can purchase a download code for $15 from Amazon and get $5 in free mp3 downloads from their store.

<swears he's not gonna go back on his promise not to buy another 360 after the second rrod>

Argh. Anyone know if this will eventually hit PC?

I'd say he looks more like Landon Donovan

I think "Shadow Complex" has been the best to come out of the "event", followed by "Splosion man".
So far, the only complain I have with the game is that i struggle a bit with the 3d corridor/background shooting during massive firefights....and how I'm addicted to exploring as much as I can.
And I wasnt THAT bothered by the jab, Alex, just surprised... Scott Card sure deserves it after outing himself as an intolerant, crazy bastard.

I bought a 2nd 360 without hesitation. I don't care whether MS deserves the money, I just did the math, and I'm getting well more than $600 worth of fun out of the machine, so it's still easily worth the trouble.

If you still have the HD from the old unit, all you need is a $200 Arcade machine.

I'm sure it'll hit Steam... eventually. How strong is your willpower?

YOU BASTARD!

<looks over his credit card statements, knows he can afford one>

YOU FUCKING BASTARD!
Or you could just send it off and in a week have a new one for half the cost an arcade. Or lie and say it's RROD and see if they are nice and slip it in under warranty.
