He said it was an RROD. In which case, yeah, what's stopping you from mailing it in and getting it fixed for free?

On topic, this game's release marks the first time in a couple of months that I've bothered to use my 360. Fun game, nothing ground-breaking, but I'm not sure why anyone expected it to be -- did anyone lob that complaint at Cave Story? The exploration aspect is really all that matters in this (sub-)genre, and the game absolutely delivers in that regard.
I'm very early in the game, seems fun enough. Extremely easy so far, no real fear of dying and the grenade boss was laughable.

Additionally, it's incredibly silly to compare this game to a landmark game like SotN or even an excellent title like Super Metroid. If the game keeps up, it will be a pleasant experience, but no one will be talking about this thing next summer, let alone ten years from now.
I bought this last night, and I'm having a blast with it so far. I've already found most of the grenade upgrades, so I've got plenty of ammo to blow stuff up. Like you guys have said, it isn't all that difficult. I have died a few times, mostly due to my own stupidity. It seems that I have a talent for using the double-jump to get into high places only to fall all the way back down.

Anyway, I am the type of person that loves to explore my game worlds, so this game is tailor made for me.

Special weapons are picked by hitting left and right on the d-pad which gets a little irritating, because you'll have to scroll through them all to get the one you need- not fun when you're in combat
You can tweak this setting in the game options. The default is L-R scrolling on the d-pad. But there is also a "full d-pad" option, which sets the four special weapons to left-right-up-down - so you can directly switch between any two weapons.
I noticed that option too...wonder why that isn't the default setting. It's not like they are using the D-pad for anything else.

Yeah its easy but I can't put this one down.

Pretty goddamn fun. I burned my copy of Ender's Game to make up for buying this. Suck on that, Card!
This game is so much freaking fun it's not even funny! Probably the best $15 I've spent on an XBLA title.
So far, very underwhelmed. Reminds me of "One" for the PS1, for better or worse.

Great article on Kotaku about Card's effect on the game and its reception...
I'm not a gamer and don't own a game system, so the decision not to buy Shadow Complex is easy for me. However...

This isn't some meaningless moral stance we're talking about. As a few people have pointed out, Card is on the board of directors of the National Organization for Marriage (how can you be against them? Do you hate marriage?) which, as you've probably guessed, is an anti-gay rights group. So a biggish chunk of the profits here are likely to go towards denying basic rights to people based on their sexuality.

Apparently the video game is really cool and shit, but is there any chance you could, like, not give this guy any money? Please?
I HIGHLY doubt he gets a royalty. So he's already been paid all he's ever going to get. The only people you'd be holding back money from are the developers of a very cool game.
I have no idea how video game financing works, but seriously? He doesn't get royalties for a game that's based on his works? I find that hard to believe.
The game is set in Card's literary universe, but doesn't infringe on anything Card's created beyond that. They paid him a nice chunk of cash upfront for that privilege, but he doesnt get a crumb from the game's sales.
Where did you guys find the info on Card's lack of royalties on this one? I've got someone basically calling me an asshole for getting it and I'd like to throw that at them.
Hey, fuck them. The game's fun, right? Do they also boycott Victor Salva and Roman Polanski movies cause of their shenanigans? If the answer is "no," they're just being assholes.

I do have a complaint against the game, a major one. After some shit explodes, without letting me know, the game now refuses to let me back into a section of the base. Which means I can't collect all the items. That is bullshit. Some kind of warning would've been nice.
Heck, everything owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. is supporting this crap. If you're going to take a stand against a 2D shooter, I hope they also refuse to go see anything made by that company or its subsidiaries (Fox, 20th Century Fox, etc.)?

If you're talking about the section that I think you are (about 75% of the way through the storyline or so), then there aren't any items in there. With a couple of frustrating exceptions, it wasn't that difficult to get 100% of the items (a large portion of which I got after playing through most of the story, right before the final battle).

Spoilers, for the anal among us

It's the section that has the super badass gun in it when you're collecting the remaining 5 pieces. I went into the round room, Cobra Commander laughed at me and then blew the place up. I escaped, but now can't get back in to that section, which still has the gun and a question mark, which I know is a pass key part, which means I also can't get the other fucking component. Bull. Shit.

Yeah, thats probably the only major design flaw with the game...along not being able to switch back to regular weapons after activating a golden one.

I work in the games industry, and it's -highly- unlikely he gets royalties. We used an author of similar stature on one of our games - no royalties were paid. On the whole, it's rare for -anyone- working on a video game to get royalties (and, speaking from experience, even more rare for the publisher to actually PAY royalties that are owed).

Yeah, I sensed that was the case, and suicided there, avoiding the scene until I was ready.

Oh well, you can't hit level 50 on one playthrough anyway!

Why would you want to?

Thanks for the completely anecdotal response that's totally useless!

You're welcome!

Writers on videogames do not get royalties. What are the odss that a writer on a game with about 10 lines in it got a royalty?

But if you're that concerned about it, you could always write and ask Card yourself. Or you could just suck it up and be the asshole with the fun game.

But the mecha suit is normal?

Since the super guns start unlocked on subsequent new games, if I do a second runthrough, I wish I could have some nice shades, chains and bubble gum to go with my golden gun.

On August 19, Chair Entertainment, a subsidiary of Epic Games, Inc, and Microsoft Corp. delivered the next evolution in downloadable games with the launch of “Shadow Complex™” exclusively on Xbox LIVE Arcade®.

Officially recorded as the most downloaded single-player title in Xbox LIVE Arcade history to date, more than 200,000 people purchased “Shadow Complex” in the first week of its release.

In addition to exceeding sales expectations, “Shadow Complex” continues to garner outstanding critical acclaim. Awarding the game a perfect 5/5 score, Gamespy said "the game offers plenty of reason to play it more than once" and advises their readers that "this is a game not to be missed." “Shadow Complex” also received a perfect 5/5 from G4TV, which commented “you really cannot have more immediate, satisfying fun than this game right now.” In its 9.4/10 review, IGN states they "found it very difficult to stop playing" and recommended gamers "go buy this game."

“Congratulations to Chair Entertainment and Epic Games for creating an outstanding game,” said Scott Austin, director of digitally distributed games at Microsoft. “As the capstone title of the second annual Summer of Arcade program, “Shadow Complex” has raised the bar for downloadable games. We’re proud to offer such high-quality content on Xbox LIVE Arcade.”

"We're really flattered by all the great things fans and critics have said about Shadow Complex," said Dr. Michael Capps, president of Epic Games. "Chair's goal was to make a gorgeous game with tons of action, addictive challenges, and a great sense of exploration – and they knocked it out of the park. We’re so proud to have Shadow Complex join the Epic portfolio. If you haven’t already downloaded it on Xbox LIVE, give the demo a try."

What amuses me is how quickly this thread died after the game came out.

I really loved the shit out this game! Best $15 I spent all year. Glad that it;s doing so well. I was kind of wondering how many people were downloading it.
I'd love to get it and play it, but I'm in a RROD cycle. When my console returns in working order, Shadow Complex is the first thing I'll download and play.

Shadow Complex was a damn lot of fun, and I'm planning on getting back to it for a second run-through soon. Unfortunately for SC, Batman kind of got in the way a little bit.

They very well might be. The article mentioned that it was the best selling single player game. As far as I can tell, the ones you mentioned could still be fair game.
A bit late to the party with this, but man, its great. Lately I've been kinda at a low point with games and haven't really enjoyed them. This give brings that old style nostalgia with updated graphics to hit all the right spots. Gets me excited to geek out and get ready for all the awesome fall releases.

Whats this business about gold weapons though? Do I have to upgrade them to that point or is it unnecessary optional upgrade?
There are gold bars hidden around that when you find them all unlocks a secret room that has every gun in the game in there. These guns happen to be golden in color. It also means you can access the better guns right from the beginning of the game on multiple playthroughs.
So these golden guns are totally optional? I'm going to try to get 100% on my first play trough.

The game draws upon the bad Metroid games like Corruption (which had a similar excitement killing second half).

Starts strong and levels off about a third of the way through. By the end, I was going for 100% just because I'm neurotic, rather than having any hope of some expansive or awesome hidden area.
Ouch, Don't tell me that. I haven't heard a bad thing yet about the game.
Don't worry, it's not perfect, but it's -easily- worth the $15.
I had fun the entire way through, and I got 100% my first time through as well.
