Suggest a magazine for me to subscribe to

Thread Starter
I've only ever subscribed to three magazines during the course of my long and illustrious 24 years on earth: The Star Wars Insider, NEWSWEEK, and Rolling Stone.

Before trashing my taste, let me explain that the Insider was when I was about 15, and Rolling Stone was a gift. However, my Rolling Stone subscription ends in October and I'm looking for another magazine to subscribe to.

What magazines do you subscribe to, or recommend? For accuracy in suggestions, here's a bit about me: I'm not into any real hobbies, not interested in sports magazines, and in the Rolling Stone I usually turn first to the National Affairs section. When walking through the magazine section at the local grocery store I usually don't see anything I would be interested in reading.

I do like reading however, and when searching for other threads on this subject I saw Devin's thread praising the New Yorker, and others praising Harpers in the same thread. Any other suggestions?

Well, The New Yorker is really great, and if I had to subscribe to one magazine, that would be it. The other would be Scientific American, if only because I don't have enough money for a Nature subscription.

The New Yorker really is the best magazine in the world. I like Harper's, too, but the Atlantic Monthly would be my second suggestion. I'm a big fan of Oxford American as well.

If you can man up to the jargon, and have any desire to know about whats actually happen in the world, you can't beat The Economist. It's sister publication, Foreign Policy, is also really good, if a bit wonkish.

The subscriptions can be a bit pricey, but I read every weeks journal cover to cover. Makes Time and Newsweek look like grade-school ninnies.

Also: National Geographic!

As far as your tastes go, I dunno, but seeing as how this is a filmcentric website, you can't go wrong with an Empire subscription. The reviews might not be bang up to date Stateside, but their features, access and interviews are second to none as far as I'm concerned.

Only magazine I subscribe to right now is Wired. Always makes great casual reading.

Politics/ News: The Atlantic or Economist
Cinema: Empire
Games: Edge

I don't subscribe to any of these but I end up buying most of them.

Cigar Afficionado.

Leg Show would seem to be a niche porn mag for leg fetishists, but by the time you get to the middle of any given issue, it becomes clear it's a foot freak mag. Like they're ashamed of being about feet, so their cover story is "we're a leg fetish publication!"

So, Leg Show.

Magazines are still around?

pagoda, Some good publications are...Empire and SFX for film, Play (the US gaming magazine, not the European gaming mag, and Wizard for comics and comic book films.

I'm sure this is what you meant. Just saying.

For bathroom reading, you can't beat Game Informer. It's what it's made for.

Wired is good because it's both interesting and super cheap. I think it's only $10 a year. And the stories that don't focus on tech are usually really cool and almost have a kind of This American Life feel.

The New Yorker.
The New Yorker.
The New Yorker.

Instead of waiting every month for some new paper to arrive in the mail why not go CHUD Paypal and feel good about what you read here every day?

Seed is a fascinating (if a bit beyond me) science magazine.

Seconding the New Yorker and Atlantic and Economist.

However, my actual subscriptions (not counting professional magazines) are to the Smithsonian and then three literary magazines: The Sun, Ploughshares, and Zoetrope All-Story.

I've been reading Esquire for ages...

Berkshire Living.

By far the best resource for those of us who live in the berskshires. I've been a suscriber for years, and they have great recipes and local interest stories. Check it out.

Also used to suscribe to EGM, but now the internet takes care of all that kind of news.

If this didn't win Post of the Week, it should have.

But yeah, New Yorker.

I've got an Empire subscription and it's great, the reviews are good and the special articles they have every month are very entertaining.

Their recent Terminator Salvation review was also done by none other than Devin

Are you sure? Cos Empire gave it 4 stars and i'm pretty sure Devin was pretty down on it.

Other than Empire and Harper's, which others have suggested, I like Skeptic and the Skeptical Enquirer.

Real answer:

The Economist is a great magazine. I really have thought about subscribing from time to time.

Yep, I remember his Chud review being more positive than negative as well.

I did double take when I first read it.

That was a weird one. Like when Devin was quoted in their "The Future of the Superhero" article back in May's issue.

I'm with those who said "Wired". It's the only magazine I really read semi-regularly outside of the occasional "Hollywood North".

My favourite magazine isn't a magazine in the traditional sense; you don't read it. Ever heard of Wholphin? It's a DVD magazine that often features rare short films by acclaimed directors. It's expensive ($50/year) and if you dig you may be able to find some of the shorts online, but that's my pick!
