Figure it's easier to highlight the interesting stuff all in one place as the Con progresses.

Starting with Jeff Smith Announces New "Bone" Projects.

Here's an announcement, for the third convention this year that I've had to travel for, I'm sick a day into it. I was fine this morning, but now I think I'm getting a fever. Not the kind of fever that there's a prescription for.

I should be at the Avatar panel right now. Bummer.

UPDATE!

I'm feeling better today.

I don't think these were the type of announcements you were looking for, Jeb. Sorry.

Hey, just glad you're up and around!

Going to Quesada's panel? I know he's always hyping something as the second coming, but Rich Johnston, who's seen more than one of these announcements in his day, seems to think something genuinely big is going to be announced today:

Quote:
I understand that on Friday’s Cup O’ Joe panel at San Diego Comic Con, Marvel editor-in-chief Joe Quesada will announce that Marvel will publish something. And I know what it is. I squirrelled it out, piecing together all sorts of aspects from many sources. But I’ve been asked to hold off from any mention, however small, even on the atomic level, because of unique issues involved. So I’m being nice.

When they announce what it is, there is bound to be speculation, intrigue, interest and artwork hitting the major sites. The boards will explode, twitter will fail, this is the closest I’ve ever seen to that fabled legend in comics, that of breaking the internet in half.

Joe Quesada has been doing his own teasing. He twitters:

"I’m going to say this repeatedly over the next few days, Go to the Cup o’ Joe panel on Friday at 2:00. Why? Because somewhere midway through the panel, we’ll be showing a piece of art and making an announcement that will be the talk of the con."

He’s right, it will be.

But I’m not telling. Because of real, honest, extenuating circumstances that could screw real, honest people over if I run it now. In fact, the timing is such an issue, the announcement may have to wait till the end of the panel.
I'm particularly intrigued by the notion that timing is so critical: the difference between 2:30 and 3:00 pm could make a big difference? Wonder if it has to do with something else happening at the same time at the Con?

The hot speculation at this point seems to be that they've finally cleared Miracleman/Marvelman for reprint, with Gaiman set to finally resume writing the rest of the series.

If Gaiman's at another panel that overlaps with the Marvel one, that could be the reason for the timing issues.

I'm surprised that I haven't seen any mention hereabouts of the panel for the film of Kick-Ass, with Millar and Vaughn. Slashfilm is raving.

Quote:
With one day down, Kick Ass was undoubtedly the biggest surprise at Comic-Con thus far. While I was expecting the best given Matthew Vaughn’s previous films, the pitch-perfect execution of the film in the clips and teaser were far beyond my expectations, and at one point even brought the majority of the audience to standing ovation. An outside observer might even say that Kick Ass was received more warmly than Avatar.

Hyperbole, much?

Watch it be some Captain America movie shit. If it's Miracleman, that's nice. But, I don't see that breaking the internet in half.

I bet it's another X-Men cross-over event. Nothing will be the same again...until it's finished.

Or, they're wheeling out the New Universe again...You can't keep Kickers Inc. down forever!

Ahh, but a black Captain America could break the internets in half.

Well, they've already announced a new Cap/Black Panther thing from Hudlin. Are any of the characters from TRUTH/The Crew still around? I didn't keep up with them after that book petered out.

If it is about Miracleman, I don't think it'll be the explosion that the quote above suggested. That's just my personal tastes speaking.

I assume I'll hear whatever it is via Agent_M on twitter.

Well, Red She-Hulk exists.
So does the Internet.

You may know him better as Miracleman.
Yeah this means nothing to me and I've been reading comics since I was a little kid.

And that drawing by Quesada is horrible!

Does this mean reprints? If it's just new stuff, then I don't give a shit.

I must have missed the part where Quesada's going to come to everyone's house and shoot their dog.

OK, how about Charlie Huston on Deathlok? Huh? Huh?

Geez... tough crowd.

I think Alan Moore is writing it.

Unlikely, but he's been recently quoted as saying that he was looking forward to having the legal issues sorted out, and the comics back in print, mostly so that Mick Anglo can actually reap some reward from the character.

Evidently, there's still a ways to go on this. The original strips can be reprinted now. And Marvel is the only company that will be able to reprint the Moore/Gaiman stuff, but I guess there are still negotiations with some of the artists that need to be completed before those deluxe hardcover reprints will be available.

No Jeb, I think Alan Moore is writing it.

Ya got me!

I do like the fact that Gaiman and Buckingham are onboard (at least in spirit at this point). If there's any chance of getting it finished, it would be nice if they could do it.

I also think it's hysterical that one of the most prestigious reprint projects in modern comics might need the blessing of Chuck Austen to move forward!

I love this reaction from some random guy at newsarama;

Quote:
"Wow that new announcement was amazing. This is why it showed me what my life would be like if I didn't like comics. Now I understand that blank stare some people give me when I get excited about the latest comic movie coming out. "
The Moore Miracleman comics are worth some interest. New stuff, highlighted by a Quesada picture that doesn't represent MM in the slightest, not so much. Unless Moore is writing it.

Thanks for the hyperbole Marvel.

Didn't care for the Gaiman/Buckingham issues, I take it.
I've only read MM #1-16, the Moore run. So the Gaiman run might be quite good. The reasons MM has the status is has are for the aforementioned 16 issue run and the legal issues around it. I don't mean to impugn issues I haven't read. Just to celebrate those I did. Nothing at Marvel makes me think that they would be good stewards for this property. And I like Marvel comics OK sometimes.

Looks like he still has some STACHE RESIDUE.
But I'm impressed by the youthful pose!
So does this mean that Marvel is getting in on DC's racket of buying characters and folding them into their universe? Are we going to see Miracle Man fight the Rulk? Nevertheless, I will be excited when I hear that I can own the original Alan Moore run on MM.
The hyperbole was idiotic, but having the classic Miracleman/Marvelman comics available in print is really really cool, and is certainly more exciting to me than "Spider-man's getting married! Who would have thunk it?!?" type announcements. MM really is the forerunner of Watchmen and Supreme and just about every superhero story Moore ever wrote. Think of it as Moore's Swamp Thing style "everything you know is wrong" gritty reinvention of Captain Marvel, but with a character no one cares about, so it's OK. Far more than Swamp Thing, possibly even more than Watchmen, this is probably the book that triggered the trend towards retconning and reimagining superheroes for the "modern era". (Yes, I've managed to read most of it.)

It's also interesting that there's such a smooth transition between styles. It starts with a classic Marvelman kiddie story, switches to Moore's decontructionalist style, and starts rapidly evolving. By the end of Moore's run it's in a completely different, totally fantastical place, one that suits Gaiman perfectly and allows him to tell Sandman-style interlinked short stories years before he actually started writing Sandman.

So yes, this is pretty big news if they're reprinting it, but new stories are significant as well, given that Gaiman never properly finished his storyline.

I guess I'm to blame for some of this, at least around here.

The only actual quote I saw from Quesada was that "somewhere midway through the panel, we’ll be showing a piece of art and making an announcement that will be the talk of the con."

And I think he was right. It is a significant advancement in the chance of getting that important comics work back into print, and a lot of people WERE talking about it.

But then I also had to go and post Rich Johnston's tongue-in-cheek references to things like the Internet breaking in half.

Which, of course, people took at face value.

And I should have realized that would be the case.

The Iron Man 2 footage kicked everyone's ass.
Yeah, Devin's twitter feed mentions WAR MACHINE. I'm not an Iron Man nerd but I love me some War Machine. Now I can't wait for Iron Man 2.

Over at AICN, Quint reports that they've done the voice casting for David Fincher's film of The Goon.

The Goon= Clancy Brown
Frankie= Paul Giamatti

I can't even imagine two better choices. According to Quint, while it's not iron-clad yet (contracts and such), both actors are attached and have voiced some test animation.

Hard to get too excited about the Marvel Man announcement based on those details. Does it mean reprints of the Moore issues? Does it mean Gaiman is going to complete his story? That would be good news, although Miracle Man has rippled through the comics industry for a long time and it's not going to be as groundbreaking and fresh as it was at the time.

OTOH, if it means that Marvel Man is going to be having adventures alongside The Sentry and Wolverine, then I have zero interest.
