Great Semi-Forgotten Games

Thread Starter
My apologies if this type of thread has been done before. I looked through the first several pages here and didn't seem to find one.

Anyway, I was just wondering what some of the games you guys played back in the day that were great (at least to you), but don't really seem to be remembered as often as some games are. I'll list a few of mine to start with, although I'll probably think of more later.

System Shock 2 - I'm going to list this one, even though it has gotten a lot more attention since Bioshock came out. Before that, it seemed to live in relative obscurity. SS2 creeped me out a lot whenever I would play it, but I couldn't stop booting it up. The different character classes offered several different ways to play, and what game isn't made better with zombie monkeys running around?

Thief: The Dark Project & Thief: The Metal Age - Looking Glass Studios had some serious game-making skills. Not only did they make System Shock, but they made these two gems as well. I spent many hours sneaking through mansions, zombie-infested prisons, police stations, and underground lairs thanks to these games. Many of the levels are designed so well that I still go back to tackle them every once in a while. I also think that Garrett, the main character, is a very interesting one. Sneaking around in a video game has rarely been done better.

Blade Runner - The Blade Runner point and click adventure game is often overlooked, but I really enjoyed it. It's several endings were enough for me to play through it a few times. The main character (you don't play as Deckard) ended up being either a human or a replicant at the end, depending on the choices you made throughout the game.

Shogo:Mobile Armor Division- fun first person shooter that has you running around in a mec as well. Fun and bloody as hell, it never received the love it should have. Speaking of which I need to find my copy.

SaGa Frontier on the PSX. It's a JRPG but pretty unique and a throwback to older Squaresoft titles that never made it to the States until like the GBA and DS era began. It has seven characters each with their own storyline, which can overlap. It's also really open-world and there are a fuckton of possible party members to recruit. The sequels are garbage and I'm not sure if there's any other decent games in the SaGa series. I know that the two PS2 follow-ups, Unlimited SaGa and Romancing SaGa are garbage.

I fucking loved Shogo! Such a cool concept with the mixture of huge Mechs and regular FPS and it was great in multiplayer!

'Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen' on the Sony PS1. This was a great strategy/tactical game that never really got its due acclaim.

Ogre Battle was pretty sweet, but best RPG for the PS1 was Suikoden...hands down.

I've downloaded a bunch of old NES/Super NES/Sega Genesis games from Abandonia.com.

If you like the old Koei tactical games like Nobunaga's Ambition, Genghis Khan, etc... then check it out.

One of my favourite semi-forgotten titles is Probotector. It was a thoroughly generic side-scrolling blaster, but awesome nonetheless (giant robots were a massive bonus to my Primary School-aged self, at the time.) Its sequel has perhaps the most superfluous subtitle ever: Return of the Evil Forces.
"Probotector"...

That just sounds SO wrong...
Jumping Flash.

Still one of my favorite platformers ever made, and probably the only game that launched with the PS1 that hasn't aged like a fine turd.

Aww!

Come on!

You know "Warhawk" is still just as playable today, as it was all those years ago...

even with those horrible Joe Pilato cutscenes.

Great thread, although I'd contest the validity of System Shock 2 and Thief as they have always had huge cult followings and even people that have never played them still are aware of what they are and how influential they were.

Shogo - AWESOME. I'm glad you listed that, that game deserves a lot of love.

I'm going to add a few myself:

Tribes - MP madness on the PC that demanded teamwork. Jetpack greatness. Well designed maps that always seemed to be the perfect size. A wide assortment of different classes that actually mattered on a tactical level. Tribes II was fun but it broke just as many things as it enhanced. I believe Tribes is freeware now, at least it used to be. Can't speak if there is a community there anymore but it is worth a shot.

Einhander - PS1 2D/3D "shmup" goodness. Reminds me of a blending of Lifeforce (Gradius) and R-Type with some really spiffy graphics for the time. Highly sought after title by Square that became somewhat scarce not to long after its initial release.

I understand the love and critical praise but for whatever reason, it never did much for me.

One Must Fall 2097 - This is a fun little fighting game from Epic's past. Who doesn't want a game with giant robots battling it out? Anyway, the tournament mode was pretty well done, letting you upgrade your bot as you went. You got more cash to spend based on how well you fought in the ring. I also remember the game having some fun "fatality" moves and the main theme still pops into my head from time to time.

ZZT - Created by Tim Sweeney, founder of Epic, ZZT is a DOS-based scrolling adventure game where the graphics are made entirely out of ANSI characters. You play as a little smiley face symbol running around. The game had some pretty fiendish puzzles, and some fun enemy tyes. However, the real appeal of ZZT is its robust level-editor (complete withits own programming language, ZZT-OOP). I'll have to see if I still have my ZZT floppy disc lying around somewhere.

Hence the phrase "semi-forgotten". They certainly have a cult following, but System Shock and Thief have never really hooked into the mainstream as much as something like Half-Life, Doom, Quake, etc.

Also, I was trying to think of a good name for this thread, and this is the best I could come up with this morning.

Oh shit, how could I forget Mutant League Football on the Sega Genesis?? This is THE game I have been wanting remade forever. Of course knowing EA, they would suck everything that made it fun and would turn it into a giant commercial but a cracker can wish can't he?

Bribing refs, slaughtering hordes of players (and of course, the ref) AWESOME audibles (rocket packs on your RB, reversing your opponents controls(!) etc...), varied fields littered with landmines and crater/holes, low gravity atmosphere options, highly entertaining stupid player names like Bones Jackson all wrapped up with the exact control scheme of Madden in its glory games.

There was a follow-up game, Mutant League Hockey that was fun but the AI was shit and the the frame-rate was a shit sandwich.

No big deal, it's all good, I think it is a fun thread anyway.

'Ikari Warriors' from my old arcade days is semi-forgotten. 'Contra' and 'Super Contra', both side-scrollers, kinda stole its thunder. I plugged alot more quarters into IW, though.

It was a great top-view combat game. Two player action on it was great, as you could really concentrate your fire on certain enemies in order to take them out quickly. You could hop in and out of tanks, lob grenades, fire bazookas, everything. Great fun.

And I forgot about throwing dynamite at the half time "marching band".

Never call Contra 'generic' again. Ever.

Yeah, EA, I trust you enough nowadays, so, anytime you wanna get around to bringing back Road Rash, feel free.

Especially the "Wild Thing", in RR 2...

Hit a hill with that bike, tap the nitrous, and you flew through most of the courses.

Also thinking about the soundtrack. The Sega CD version introduced me to Soundgarden and Monster Magnet. For this I am forever grateful.

Ah, fond memories.

If they make a new one, 'Rusty Cage' HAS to be in the soundtrack. It's like the perfect video game driving song.

Hopefully...

but I'm pushing for the Johnny Cash version, myself.

Devil Dice and Intelligent Qube were great puzzle games I would love to see on PSN sometime down the road. I remember Intelligent Quebe being fairly popular when it hit, but it seems all but forgotten now.

what about Speedball and Speedball 2 for the Amiga? I remember playing that shit for days on straight.

Probotector sounds so much better than Contra. I stand by my remark.

On this much we agree.

Hertzog Zwei, Martian Memorandum, Wing Commander 1 and 2 (people forget how great the first two were after the FMV editions and X:Wing and Tie Fighter came along), Legend of Kyrandia, Psychonauts, almost the entire Dreamcast library, JetMoto (PS1), Twisted Metal (PS1), Pro Wrestling, Super Spike Volleyball, Syndicate, Magic Carpet, Psychonauts ... I'm sure others will come to me.

Man, One Must Fall 2097 really takes me back. At first I was glad to hear I wasn't the only one who played this game, then I jump on youtube and find out theres a huge cult following making their own tournaments for it and stuff. Mind = blown.

I own the Blade Runner game and do a playthrough of it like once a year, enjoy it quite a bit. Huge fan of the THIEF series, it made me wish every game had a water arrow so I could darken the hallways and KO guards at my leisure. Also thrilled to see I wasn't the only Shogo lover either. I remember getting a mod for that where in multiplayer you could choose to be in the mech or on foot at any given time (normally the levels were one or the other). Running around as a giant robot while tiny little human-controlled humans were trying not to get squished was always good times, when you could actually find people to play with. They need to bring this back!

I guess I'll nominate another game that I own and play through every once in a while.. PHANTASMAGORIA. I remember playing this as a kid one summer at a relatives house and not only being wowed by all the live-action cinematics, but mostly the GOREY live-action cinematics (oh Sierra).

It's a bit crude to play through these days, the digital environments didn't age so well, but I guess there's something to be said about a violent slice of nostalgia. Plus that awesome theme song. I've always been curious about the sequel.. never been able to find it

Nice to see someone who loved this game as well, I never got to play the multiplayer though, which is a shame since I'm sure it's awesome!

I'll like to add..

Dominion: Storm Over Gift 3-Fun strategy game, kind of hard but fun to play in multiplayer. oh 1998, what a great year for gaming.

And back to the Monolith love...

No One Lives Forever-Fun, clever and well, a funny spin on the whole spy genre.

Devil Dice was GREAT. One of the best $10 purchases I have ever made.

I mentioned this in a SNES thread, but Metal Warriors is a fantastic run & gun shooter featuring two player Giant Robot action.

Magic Carpet is scarcely remembered, that's a good one.

So is Crusader: No Remorse. I don't know that the static isometric view would hold up terribly well, but it had fantastic stealth action and brutal death animations back in the day. Also featured an excellent plot twist towards the end (you fascists destroyed the PUB?).

About Xenogears: man, I loved the every living snot out of that game, until you get to disc two and it becomes massively apparent they had run out of money and time. Never managed to finish the game, I was so disappointed. But they really need to bring that combat system, it was aces.

At the arcade: UN Fighters! It's a Raiden style shooter, except you can play as a super intelligent dolphin in a stealth fighter.
Crusader...wow, forgot about that one, I had the PS1 version. Along with Project: Overkill they were pretty brutal for their time.

Holy shit, ZZT. Now that was a great game. Hell, I had a campaign so fucking massive I ran out of room and had to start a second campaign to finish the story. So glorious.

'Clive Barker's Undying' scared the SHIT out of me!
Must crack it out of it's lead-casing and see if it'll run on VISTA!
Let me add a couple of personal PS2 favourites that are already left & forgotten..

The first Maximo game 'Ghosts To Glory' was so-so (hard as nails and unforgiving), but the sequel 'Army of Zin' is great.. they nailed the Ghosts'n'Goblins atmosphere in a 3D setting, and gameplay has perfect difficulty level. Graphics and music are great.
'Herdy Gerdy': probably suffered from its cutesy look, made it seem a kids game, but it's actually pretty hard to get anywhere. It's the only game I know where you have to herd creatures. Nice Disneylike animation, and a real challenge. Modern gamers might be put off by insane loading times though.
'Mark of Kri': medieval stealth game with a nice twist. Graphic design has a distinct echo of Don Bluth- which again might account for the lack of success. Make no mistake, this ain't no kiddie fare, it's actually quite violent.
Mark of Kri is fantastic.

Extreme G3 is a really good futuristic racer on the PS2 - it goes really really fast.
I always kinda liked 'Loaded' for the PS1. Nothing special about it, you just go around killing EVERYTHING that you run into. Its simplicity made it ideal for those times when you got home from work and just wanted to kill.
Anyone else dig the unforgiving "Call of Cthulhu" as much as I did?
Mark of Kri STILL looks good. Damn good. And still violent as fuck.

Rocket Jockey - Fucking loved this game. PC game where you rode around on a modified rocket in races and such. Since it was a rocket, it did not turn well at all. So you shot out grappling hooks on the side to grab on to pylons and swiiiiing around. Or other players. Or, you know, shoot out one on each side, link them together and you had a clothesline. Goddamn, it was fun. Would love to see a XBLA remake.

Metal Warriors - someone mentioned this in the SNES thread and fuck yes. Awesome game. Multiplayer was a blast.

Cyborg Justice - Genesis game. You rolled as a cyborg where you could pick and mix your parts. And then fight other cyborgs. And if you wanted that sweet laser another cyborg had...well, you would just rip it off and stick it on your body. Cool.

Dark Cloud/Dark Cloud 2 - PS2 action RPG/city building games. Kind of the spiritual successors to Actraiser and SoulBlazer (SoulBlazer also fucking awesome and forgotten). The 2nd one is way better and (probably) still cool.

And holy shit, Crusader. Goddamn, that would be a great port to XBLA and PSN. So many sweet ass guns, so many sweet ass enemy deaths in those games.
First, i'll second the sentiment: Probotector wouldnt exist in a perfect earth, just Contra.
One word: "Syndicate"
Where the fuck is the next gen version of that one?
And godammit, if the dvelopers of "Burnout" or "Pure" made a new "Road Rash" i'd be in heaven...hell make it like a "Burnout paradise" and "GTA" hybrid, add a bit of "Torque" insanity and a kick ass soundtrack...it would be a godsend in multiplayer; I need to kick a rival biker into a semi truck in HD.
Finally, i submit "Strider", as always....just re-release the PS "strider 2" with the original one bundled as well on Live, Capcom.

What about "Abuse"? i fucking loved that one!
Abuse was the rough assed PC game where you control the shooting with your mouse, yes? And you kill aliens? That was a good one.

Syndicate is such an awesome concept, I don't know why they won't bring it back in an online format (teams of evil corporations dueling it out in public with the use of advanced cyborgs?). I think EA would own those rights (after all, they bought up Origin and Bullfrog and fucking killed them. The bastards.).

Great list.

Archon. Has anyone ever duplicated the chess board/ranked battles of this game (other than its' sequel attempts)? I'm amazed that type of strategy game never played out, unless you consider RTS games like that?

Also: "Another visitor. Stay awhile... staaaaay FOREVER!"
