The inevitable Star Wars reboot...

You know it's bound to happen somewhere down the line. Once Lucas kicks the bucket the studios will be going mad for the rights, but how should this reboot (remake?) be handled?

I say scrap everything except for the basic Jedi/Sith mythos, and work from there. The Force stuff is basically the only thing that makes Star Wars a unique space opera story anyways.

how do you remake a perfect movie? the only thing you'd do for vanity's sake is improve the lgihtsaber fight, but really, narratively, all you could do is a shot for shot remake.

i don't think people here have actually sat down and just tried to see why star wars is star wars. the flow of the film is probably the most astonishing I've ever seen.

for some reason i have a feeling that this is one reboot that won't happen. lucasfilm isn't that stupid. and star wars is too popular, gone with the wind, casblanca, godfather haven't been remade and they're older. star wars is far more well known so it's pretty safe.

and really what would you change? the force? really? prequel reboots sure.

I can't see anyone remaking these films, but more will most likely be made as an addition to the series.

yeah - how would you update Vader to make him a bigger, better, badder Vader? You can't - he's a perfect iconic villain.

And how would you recast Han Solo to make hime cooler and more er... Han Soloier...?? Forget it.

He and his family have enough money though, I don't know if they'll be inclined to sell it and loose control.

I the only possibility is episodes 7, 8 and 9. I wouldn't be surprised that Lucas has an outline for something like that that somebody could bring up later.

But remake? No.

I'm all for Ep 7, 8 & 9 as long as someone else is working on them.

I think I would remove the Stormtrooper that bangs his head on the bulkhead.

But what do you do for 7,8 and 9? Sure, there are stories to tell, but I don't think you can come up with something with the epic scope of the first two trilogies (and yes, the prequels tried for epic, just didn't succeed), at least not without something horribly contrived.

Star Wars may be a "perfect film, "that's why I'm thinking the studios will try a reboot instead of a remake. There isn't much that a remake could make better, but as long as they go the reboot route they could just tag the Star Wars name on any random sci-fi thing (as long as it has lightsabers/Force stuff.) What studio wouldn't kill for that?

Give it to an Asian filmmaker and let them turn it into some crazy wuxia-fest with Jedi.

I Don't think they need to reboot or remake it. They just need to start telling stories out of the current timeline / saga. Their is no reason why they couldn't create a new saga taking place during the old republic. Or create a saga that takes place long after the original trilogy. I think the worst thing they could do is try to create the fabled 7, 8, and 9. If rumors are true, they involve most of the characters from the original trilogy. There is entirely too much expectation by going that route. Look what happened with Vader. Everyone had expectations for how the story of Anakin/Vader should be handled. When it wasn't told how everyone expected it to be, everyone was pissed. If you had watched 1, 2, and 3, without having any idea of who Darth Vader was, would you have given two shits that he said Yippee as a kid, or was an annoying teenager? Of course not.

Either way they can start with new characters, new storyline, and god forbid, a new director. I think Lucas still has fantastic vision. He just can't direct or write worth shit. If Lucas could create a new saga where he simply lays out the basic blueprint of the story, he could hand it off to some writers that actually understand what people want to see in these movies. Add a capable director into the mix that understands why everyone hates the prequels, and you have the possibility of success.

Lucas is Star Wars, and in no way do I think he should have nothing to do with further installments. I believe if he was involved as a creative consultant we could really have something special. Truth be told, I kind of have a hope that the upcoming TV series crashes and burns. I have little to no interest in a storyline that takes place between 3 and 4. And frankly, Star Wars always has been the definition of a tentpole summer movie. It belongs in theaters. If the TV series bombs, it certainly won't be the end of Star Wars. Fox will surely try to get something working in theaters again (assuming they aren't already) if the TV series fails.

I say someone with brains passion and a huge imagination go ahead and create their very own original universe in it's very own galaxy far far away. That way we don't have to wait for Lucas to die and maybe ole George can get a reminder of how it's done properly before he carks it.

You'd think Star Wars was the only science-fantasy world there is. God damn it where's the next Lucas to blow the minds of the kids of the world?

What makes you think the rights will be up for grabs when Lucas dies?

As far as I can tell, Lucas owns Star Wars 100% out right, Fox is only used to distribute the films.

I'm sure that when George's characters eventually fall into the public domain, some descendent of Alan Moore will be there to give them the Lost Girls treatment. Hell, it'll probably be Moore himself, albeit reincarnated as a tree frog.

The only thing that should come out of Lucas' death are the original trilogy unfucked with.

God forbid though if the films had to be remade...
...I'd probably redo the prequels first.

The Old Republic is far enough along on its way to becoming a seperate franchise that I'm surprised we haven't heard rumors about KOTOR movies. We'll have to see if the MMORPG turns out to be a money-printing machine on the scale of World of Warcraft.

Not to derail, I promise, but am I the only one who thinks in hindsight that Hayden was perfect as Anakin? He comes across to me now as exactly the kind of little bitch who would become the most abusive cop in the universe if the state gave him an intimidating uniform, which is pretty much what happened when he became Vader. There's really nothing badass about Vader. It's some less than subtle symbolism that he's half a man under the suit.

Isn't Lucas remake/reboot-proofing the franchise with these constant revisions to the films? That's the impression I got, anyway.

See: that history channel special from a couple years back. Kevin Smith says pretty much the same thing.

Personally I think the only thing that needs a reboot is the prequals - give them to someone to do properly.

Perhaps redesign the limbs so the fact that he's a mechanically assisted quadriplegic is more obvious? It would have made his third act kendo beatdown on Obi-Wan seem even more violent.
