Georgia BBQ

Over in the Chef Pete's BBQ thread we were talking BBQ. Figure we could open the discussion up beyond the one restaurant.

I put my two cents in for Garden Produce and Country Store near Stone Mountain.

So, where do you go when you need some hot meat?

There was a place in Statham,(between Winder and Athens) off US 29 called Pop's. I'm not sure if it still exists, but this guy was only open on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

He only did pork, chickens, and goats... but sweet zombie Jesus, I still dream about the food, and it's been 25 years.

My favorite in the Northern burbs is SWALLOW AT THE HOLLOW, which I know a few of the other locals have visited. Really tasty pork, and they bake their own bread for the awesome, giant Texas Toast they use for sammiches. That's a big part of the appeal for me, as I love my baked goods. It doesn't hurt that they have the best mac n cheese around, and LIMEADE.

Yes, SatH is excellent. As mentioned in the other thread, I enjoy Slope's chopped chicken sandwiches and especially their baked beans, and I even like Shane's, which is pretty good for a chain. Lone Star BBQ in Alpharetta has good brisket, but I haven't been impressed with anything else.

Harold's down by Turner Field (well, a few miles away, but that's the general area) has some solid pulled pork, and cracklin' cornbread with huge bits of hog.

I found this when I was looking up a place where I ate some amazing BBQ about 5 years ago. I was working a contract job and in rural GA in between Macon and Statesboro and all the locals told me to check out Stinson's BBQ in Lumber City.

I've also eaten a few times at Fresh Air BBQ in Jackson, GA (the first on the list), as Jackson is just down the road from Covington, where I was raised.
