Dear Devin.

My name is Justin. I was offended by a phrase you used in a recent article in which you called a shemagh (an Arabic scarf) a "terrorist scarf." I pointed it out in the article's thread on these forums, and I don't think I did it in a belligerent way.

I guess I sort of expected at least an explanation, at best an apology. You never replied in that thread, so I sent you a PM several days ago explaining exactly WHY I found it offensive, and again, in a controlled and respectful way.

You have not responded to that message either. I understand you are a busy person, but it wouldn't take too long to throw together a couple of sentences, no? You are a great writer, it would be like sliding on some comfy flip-flops.

Now I am the most politically-incorrect person on the planet. I love a good racial joke as much as the next guy (funny, this is sounding similar to your article bemoaning the racial stereotypes in Transformers 2). But this is a term that has affected me and my family members extremely negatively in life, and I can't just shrug it off. Terms like that are ugly. In my opinion, it's no different from a 'sand nigger' or a 'dune coon.'

And, as I mentioned in that message, I know I don't have thousands of posts under my belt on the forums. I'm not anyone of any 'importance' on the CHUD boards. But I am a reader of your site for many years now. Actually, what does that matter? I am an Iranian (not Arabic, no, but friends and family members are) who was offended by a racial slur (to some people, that's exactly what that is) you used in an article.

I think I am entitled to a response. Granted, it is your website, you can run it any way you'd like. I guess I just thought CHUD to be above shit like that.

Graciously,

Justin

I'm pretty sure that the remark was intended to take the piss out of hipsters and/or the whole right-wing debacle where they made endless amounts of borderline-psychotic hay over Rachael Fucking Ray wearing a keffiyeh/shemagh/whatever in a Dunkin Donuts ad and saying that it was a tacit endorsement of terrorism, but I'll let you guys do whatever you want with this.

I'm going to agree with that. I find it really hard to believe that Devin would sincerely use a racist term.

Hey, if that was the case, like I said, a simple explanation would have been beautiful. As social commentary, I think that's being a tad TOO subtle, but whatever.

I am just touchy about that term. A lot of people are.

Jake got it, just like Mattimus got it in the original thread.

The joke is that hipsters are concerned with appearances, that they choose these appearances on a superficial level of what will be a certain kind of mildly off-putting to those who don't get it, that they don't think about this too much, that they are just as guilty of stereotyping as those who see the scarf as a terrorist scarf, that if you were reading the article and on board with its general ideas you should get all this unconsciously.

"Terrorist" wouldn't be a joke, and it wouldn't make sense, if it weren't implicitly separated from the writer's opinion and judged as dumb by it.

EDIT: This sounds ridiculous - it's trying to explain a joke, after all - but there's really no other way to look at it isn't more ridiculous.

I sincerely doubt that.

Sure, and if you and your family members have been called 'terrorists' (and by local law enforcement officers once!) you would be jumpy and easily offended by it too.

Yes, Whirly, in my opinion, they are the same.

I'm sorry that happened and all but you are blowing this way out of proportion. I'm saying this as a bit of friendly advice, you might just want to chill out and let this go.

Putting a period after a greeting, as opposed to a comma, is a terroristic thing to do no matter what you call your fucking scarf.

I never read the remark so I'm not sure what he meant, but he obviously doesn't intend to answer you dude.

Maybe Devin's writing up a carefully worded retort to your initial inquiry.

Did you tweet him?

I didn't think so.

You're not trying hard enough to communicate.

You wrote and responded in the appropriate thread and Devin has not responded. That should tell you he does not intend to respond and posting a thread like this is not the way to go.

Closing and moving somewhere else on the forum (not quite sure where to put it).
