I asked Rodriguez for thoughts on a return of the company's lauded X-Wing and Tie Fighter flight sim series.

His answer?

"We don’t have any announcements now, but stay tuned," said Rodriguez. "We will soon….."
Even if it's just a playable XP/Vista/Win7 re-release. In fact I think I prefer that.

Agreed. I miss those games. You just know that any remake/reboot would sacrifice gameplay for graphics.
Fuck yeah!
That would be sweet. Then I'd just need an online multi-player version of Episode One: Racer and I'd be set for Star Wars games for a while.

Of course I'll need to find my old joystick..

And a serial port!

I'm not gonna get my hopes up just yet. But yeah, I'd be happy with just about anything at this point.

Insert joke about the number of Hoth levels in a new title here.

One great thing about the originals: no Hoth.

(right? it's been awhile)

No land battles at all in X-Wing or Tie Fighter that I can recall, unless you count the Death Star.

I couldn't remember if there was a "defend the transports" mission in X-Wing or not, which I guess would count as a Hoth level, but I don't think there was.

I want to be very clear on this. I want this for my PC. I want to have to use my keyboard to switch weapons and channel power to appropriate systems and adjust shields. I feel this very strongly.

Let me rephrase. I want many of the controls to be on the keyboard. Maybe not all of them.

This is what I'm talking about. I fucking want this. And the best thing is that you didn't really need to know all these. You could get by most of the game through skill alone, save for a few instances of having to order a couple of ships.
After the Monkey Island news, a mere graphical update on the original could be on the cards - but I suspect horrible, horrible reboot.
I was looking for a CD the other day and ran across my old X-Wing disc, and said to myself, "Why haven't they re-done this for the consoles or even the PC yet? This games was awesome!" The closest I've seen is the space battle portions of Battlefront II, but it's nowhere near as fun or diverse as the old X-Wing/TIE Fighter games.
I dunno. I'm pretty happy with the Battlefront flight sims. Don't need that improved, IMO. I never did play the originals, so maybe I'm missing sumpthin'?

You did miss it, but replaying them now would be disappointing. It was the shit back in the days, and it makes Battlefront look like poo-poo (seriously). Just a graphic update would be enough, Anything else is gravy.

Looking at that key-chart gave me carpal tunnel. I'm gonna take the Savage's word on it.
I used to love these games like few others. Only potential problem is that they're practically unplayable without fancy flight-sim joysticks, and who still has those nowadays? I guess I'd have to figure out all that pc gamepad malarkey.

I distinctly remember a *brutal* one in X-Wing which actually forced me to abandon the game back in the day.
You know, as much as I loved the X-Wing/TIE Fighter series, I think I loved Rogue Squadron for the PC more. I played the ever-loving crap out of that game. It was basically Crimson Skies with X-Wings.

Trust me you'll be fine all you really need to learn are the keys to re-direct power. Having a joy stick with a throttle control helps as well.

Funny enough Best Buy still sells some decent cheap ones. This game is ment to be played with a joystick. Nothing else.

Yuh. On the Nintendo 64, that fucker was awesome. There was even and expansion cartridge to amp up the look of the game and everything! Picking off minuscule Imperial troops is a fucking fun little endeavor too...

The key chart isn't as complicated as it looks, and the X-Wing games are a lot simpler than hardcore flight sims or even comparable games like Wing Commander (I think). They're just not flat-out arcade like Rogue Squadron.

The only thing you really have to commit to memory are the energy management keys, because you need to adjust that shit constantly (which is part of the fun! Transfer power from shields to lasers and pray to God!).
Actually Read, you barely used 25% of that chart. Like said above, the throttle was the most important thing, followed by the targeting and the energy allocation. It's dead easy.

Yeah. But Wing Commander was easier and less fun. But had deadly kitties.

I also loved it on the 64. Don't remember there being much of an improvement with that expansion pack, though. Granted, I was 12, but still.

And Ginger Lynn as your mechanic.

I loved all of the X-Wing/Tie Fighter games (especially 'Tie Fighter') and almost all of the Wing Commander Games (especially 'Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger'). They were easy enough to just install and play without having to learn all of the keyboard commands RIGHT AWAY; there was a learning curve that slowly introduced the necessary commands so that you became an expert by the end of the game without too much frustration.
Hey, many of us sim enthusiasts have very robust joystick setups, like my Saitek x52 HOTAS system. But yeah, there are still plenty of inexpensive flightsticks on the market, with both throttle and rudder controls on the stick itself (rudder being especially helpful in space sims).
All you are pussies, I had that whole chart memorized.

I've been on a nostalgia kick for these games for a bit now... any sort of update/re-release would be amazing.
Tried installing Tie Fighter on a friends PC the other day...yeah...seems not to work well on Win XP...and I was far too lazy to download any of the fake DOS programs that can be used to run it. I was able to watch the intro..and how I miss those animated cut scenes! Now I wonder if a Dark Forces remake is on the way...

I know it wont happen, but I'll love it if they kept some of the midi score.

Or rather make it a selectable option. Nostalgia is one thing, but I could do without the midi score meself.

Yeah, you are right..it would getting annoying. But something during the closing credits would be fun.
As long as they keep the sound of the lasers, they can play the score with bagpipes for all I care. Talk about a Pavlovian reaction. As soon as I listened to the lasers in that youtube video I started looking for my joystick.
PC/Mac would be nice, but I'd take Xbox Live Arcade if only for the multiplayer possibilities.

Yeah, but as cliched as it is, I can't imagine a new Star Wars game without one. I can hope though.

It's a pity Battlefront 3 has gone awol...

Ah, the days of dumping all power from Weapons and Deflectors into engines in a Y-Wing while trying to get the fuck out of a combat zone after overwhelming Imperial reinforcements arrive...
... or switching shields to double front and tearing up the shield generators on a Star Destroyer at point blank range with no targeting so as to avoid their missile battery lock-on, then switching them to double rear to get the hell out of laser range, dodging whatever TIEs are left in the area and trying to bleed some weapons energy to buff those shields back up...

Don't forget to link your 4 Lasers (if your in an X-wing) for a slower fire rate, but heavier punch.

all to the music of Starwars in Midi

Hey guys! I thought Rebel Assault I & II were the best Star Wars PC flight sims!

(gets stoned to death)

Owwwwww!

When I was attacking large ships, frigates and up, I would always link all my lasers together and dive bomb so I could take out sub-systems (turrets, shield generators, etc) faster and then unlink them and do strafing runs. I don't think it was any more efficient but it sure was cool strafing along a huge ass Star Destroyer listening to that awesome laser sound and watching its hull integrity go down.

Fuck, I want a game like this so much.
Never has a game been simultaneously so frustrating and so fun as when X-Wing required you to race back and forth defending a convoy from tie-bombers. The B-Wing expansion pack had some really fun missions, too IIRC.

I've actually spent hours in my basement trying to get my old 486dx running again just so I can play this game (OK, and maybe to recover a few [ahem] image files).
The only game that came close to the greatness of these was Freespace 2.
