To quote Marge Simpson:

"Thats Slick Willy for ya, always with the smooth talk."

Im glad he got this settled. I cant imagine how scared they must have been.

Cue the cries of "Why didn't Hillary handle this?" from the right.

"Clinton expressed words of sincere apology to Kim Jong Il for the hostile acts committed by the two American journalists against the DPRK after illegally intruding into it," the news agency reported.
Yeah, right.

John Bolton is already claiming that this was dealing with terrorists. I'd love to see how Bush Co. would have handled it.
John Bolton, ambassador extraodinaire, earlier today published an article in the Washington Post entitled "Clinton's Unwise Trip to North Korea".

HAR!

Inevitable wingnut diatribes about "appeasement" to begin in 5... 4... 3...
The neo-cons are so quick to bash anything positive from this administration that they hardly have time to get their ideas together. They're seriously going with the first thought that comes to mind.

Maybe he can swing by Iran, pick up a few hikers while he's on his way back.

And this continues to affirm my theory that whatever John Bolton says. You do the exact opposite.

Now for Bill to exit North Korea to the James Bond theme song.
Kim Jong Il wasn't looking very sick in the footage I've seen. Either he's hiding his illness well or, as I've always imagined, Bill Clinton's presence can cure disease.
Wow. Clinton sure went well out of his way to score with Lisa Ling. Gotta respect that.

FOX News will be like a sackful of rabid raccoons tonight.
A former President rescuing Americans abroad? What's not to love! Carter is probably livid.
How awesome is it that Bill Clinton can stroll into North Korea, be all like "Hey, our bad," and come back with people who were sentenced to 12 years of hard labor? I'm surprised the man hasn't been named King of some small island nation.
Again, I very much doubt that he apologized for anything.

I wouldnt be surprised if he did. Seems like the polite thing to do.

My response would be; why is that bad in any way?
Because an apology is an admission of guilt and the statement on the apology sounds like propaganda.

The US had nothing to apologize for, and I doubt they required from the former president that he do so, they already got a lot just from him visiting their country and the possibility of opening talks with the US.
Ah I see.

I figured a "Sorry for the trouble" or "Well try to see that more Americans dont cross your borders" wouldnt be out of line. But yeah, I think a formal apology would be peculiar.
It'd be great if president Clinton could talk about it, but I doubt he can go into much details. I actually doubt they really talked about this incident much, you get the sense that it was already agreed that they were going to release them if he was to travel and talk to them. Clinton wouldn't have shown up if that wasn't the case, I'm more inclined to think they talked a bit more about the nuclear situation and the possibility of more, and different type of dialog.
Either way, the man came back from N Korea with a woman on each arm.

Cant argue with homeboy's skills.
True.

Although not to diminish Clinton's contribution here but this says more about president Obama's policy of engaging even our enemies. So now we have a really good success story that proves his approach has benefits.

I'm kinda curious what the Republican response to this will be, sure they can say "we're negotiating with terrorists" or whatever but you can't argue against success. Plus the images and statements from the reporters will be images hard to fight, even for big propaganda machines.
I bet Bill Clinton is in for one loong lovin flight back to the US, AmIRigthtGuys?
I havent looked at their photos in a while, but I think this is one of the bishes hes rollin with:

Didn't see it, but apparently Hannity was none to pleased with Mr. Clinton.
I dont ever watch TV/cable news so if anyone catches wind of some Clinton bashing throw up a description or link so I can sample the insanity.

Alicublog has a summary of the early wingnut responses:

http://alicublog.blogspot.com/

(top story right now, but it may move down the page -- links are embedded on the site)

Some excerpts:

Quote:
"Color me disgusted," says Macsmind. "As you know I’ve been married to a Korean for 26 years, and I am well familiar with the conditions inside the North." (Blink twice for "I am being tortured," Mrs. Macsmind! It's not like back home!) "Put it this way, when the truth comes out, the regmine will make Stalin’s and Hilter’s look pale in comparison."

"I want them out, but this way?" says Atlas Shrugs

"The photo that accompanies the story shows a gloating Kim apparently happy with the groveling of two US Presidents. That appears to be the happiest I have ever seen him. Clinton's look is one of grim determination. The chances of reaching a negotiated settlement of issues between the US and North Korea still remain remote and if such settlements are agreed to, the chances that North Koreans will honor them are also remote." -- Prairie Pundit
I'm sure there'll be tons more as the day wears on.

Also, all those dumb mouthpieces need to be lined up and hit with a bat. What, because they didn't send troops in to storm the facilities and provoke yet another war effort, we're all pussies now except for you big, strong, tough Fighting Keyboardists? Kiss my ass.
Apologizing to North Korea's like a hostage negotiator apologizing via megaphone to a nutjob holed up in his house with a shitload of guns. He's just being pragmatic, he's just doing whatever to get the hostages free, and everyone knows he doesn't really mean it. So why the fuck complain about Bill Clinton, he could tell Kim Jong Il he'll be named the next Great American Hero for all I care.
I don't think that's how diplomacy works, and again I don't think he apologized. They'll let them publish their little propaganda statements but that doesn't mean he did at all.

The fact that North Korea got a former President to scramble up to their country (after calling his wife names like "bag lady" no less) is probably enough of a face-saver for Kim Jong Il without actually having Clinton apologize for anything or insist that he say that he did.

It's not a sexy sell to the American people that no one got shot - well, it does have Sexy Clinton but other than that - and that we brought these women home alive by simply talking. But you can't argue with success.

It probably had as much, if not more, to do to the fact that the two ladies worked for Al Gore, so Bill was doing his old VP a solid favor.
I thought so too, but it was reported that NK asked for Bill Clinton, btw.

[Republican]Perhaps its because they knew they could get whatever they wanted out of Clinton just like the time he gave them those nuclear reactors![/Republican]
NK had been requesting a vist from Bill for years, so everyone benefitted. NK got their tea party and local press, we got our people back.

And The Closer, did you see this report out of Sydney about North Korea helping Myanmar build a nuclear reactor?

Well ... that's not too unreasonable, they've negotiated with him before. It wasn't going to be Bush of course, the only other option would have been Carter, but Clinton kind of makes sense. I'm curious why it was him, it'd be great to get more details. I'm sure Gore had to factor into this, but hard to tell.

Better yet, put him in a room with the two husbands of those journalists. The guy needs his ass kicked.

Bill Clinton couldn't negotiate his way out of the prison in Idiocracy. If you do not think that this was all prearranged before clinton ever stepped on the plane, you know nothing about politics. This was Obama, for the win.

Err.. if credit other than Bill is necessary, it should probably go to Obama's chief diplomat, the Secretary of State. Obama gets credit for everything that happens under his administration, good or bad.

There's a nice "how it happened" timeline on CNN.com, if anyone's interested.
